Maidstone is een female rockband uit de omgeving van Utrecht. Ruim tien jaar geleden kwam hun eerste EP ‘Get Out’ uit. Vier jaar later volgde hun full cd ‘Not Otherwise Specified’. De dames zijn te gast geweest bij verschillende radiostations en hebben ook regelmatig opgetreden. Bijvoorbeeld op Puddingpop. Op 7 maart kwam hun album ‘The tree of life’ uit.
Wat vrijwel meteen opvalt is dat het geluid van de muziek te dof is. Zeker voor rock had er meer body in het geluid moeten zitten. Meer ‘snerpende’ gitaren, een ‘vettere’ bas en een beter ‘vlammend’ geluid van de drums. Als de zang erbij komt, klinkt dit juist wat scherp.
Er zit dus een disbalans tussen zang en muziek. Hoewel de opbouw van deze ‘poppy’ openingstrack wat eenvoudig is, is ‘Demons Speed’ wel opzwepend.
‘Backbone’ heeft wat kleiner gespeelde stukjes, deze hebben te weinig impact. Het geheel komt wat rommelig over, alsof het niet helemaal klopt qua timing. Toch zitten hier leuke drum details in.
In ‘The Road’ zakt het geluidsniveau van de achtergrondzang ver weg. Terwijl de leadzang vlak daarna weer vrij goed klinkt.
Maar er zijn ook leuke dingen, zo heeft ‘We Haven’t Met Yet’ lekkere bas grooves. Na een aangenaam stukje mid-tempo is het vervolg poppy. Dit ritme snoept te veel aandacht weg van het gitaarspel.
De nummers zijn vrij voorspelbaar opgebouwd, het ritme is wel pakkend.
Door het langzamere intro van ‘Tree Of Life’ hoop ik dat Maidstone me gaat verrassen. In het eerste deel van de zang mis ik de echte warmte. De muziek raakt me niet als ik zou willen. Dat was zeker wel gebeurd als alles goed had geklonken.
Hierna volgen nog enkele nummers. Ook na 13 nummers ben ik helaas niet enthousiast geworden.
De energie die de dames zeker zullen hebben, komt op ‘The tree of life’ niet echt tot uiting. De kleur van de stemmen van de dames zijn redelijk gelijkwaardig. Ze hebben best een eigen geluid, waar niet iedereen van zal houden.
De achtergrondzang is her en der te voorspelbaar, op andere plaatsen geeft het een meerwaarde. De opbouw van de nummers is niet heel verrassend, maar wel pakkend.
Sommige teksten zijn bedoeld om intens naar het nummer te luisteren, maar dat laat het geluid niet echt toe. Één van de mooiste teksten is ‘Under Construction’. Daarmee zet Maidstone een mooi statement.

Maidstone – The tree of life
Maidstone is a female rock band from the Utrecht area. Their first EP ‘Get Out’ was released over ten years ago. Four years later followed their full CD ‘Not Otherwise Specified’. What is noticeable almost immediately, is the fact that the sound of the music is too dull. Especially for rock there should have been more body in the sound. More ‘shrill’ guitars, a ‘heavier’ bass and a better ‘fierce’ sound of the drums. When the vocals kick in, the sound is a bit sharp.
So, vocals and music are unbalanced. Although the buildup of this ‘poppy’ opening track is a bit simple, ‘Demons Speed‘ is a catchy one.
‘Backbone‘ has some smaller played pieces, these have too little impact. The whole seems a bit messy, as if it’s not quite right in terms of timing. Still there are some nice drum details in it.
In ‘The Road‘ the sound level of the background vocals drops down quite a lot. While the lead vocals sound pretty good just after that.
But there are nice things too, like ‘We Haven’t Met Yet‘ has nice bass grooves. After a pleasant piece of mid-tempo, the sequel is poppy. This rhythm snatches too much attention away from the guitar playing.
The songs are quite predictable, the rhythm is catchy.
By the slower intro of ‘Tree Of Life‘ I hope Maidstone will surprise me. In the first part of the vocals I miss the real warmth. The music does not touch me the way I would like to. That would certainly have happened if everything had sounded well.
After this there are a few more songs. Even after 13 songs I am unfortunately not enthusiastic.
The energy the ladies will certainly have, is not really expressed on ‘The tree of life’. The colour of the voices of the ladies are quite similar. They have their own sound, not all of you might like it.
Every now and then, the background vocals are too predictable, in other places it gives an added value. The structure of the songs is not very surprising, but catchy.
Some lyrics are meant to be listened to intensely, but that doesn’t really allow the sound. One of the most beautiful lyrics is ‘Under Construction‘. With that Maidstone makes a beautiful statement.
