After Hekz’s previous performance at Parkvilla Theatre in Alphen aan de Rijn (2020), Hekz returned with a new line-up. One of the changes was the addition of violinist Lucia La Rezza to the live line-up. She could already be heard in a number of songs on the album ‘Terra Nova’ (2023). The concert on Friday 12 April took place at the Parkvilla Theatre in Alphen aan de Rijn (The Netherlands)
Highway star
Against all odds, frontman Matt Young started with an acoustic set, playing his own songs as well as covers. During the first song, ‘Breakout’, there was a sound problem with his guitar. Therefore, without a microphone, he sang on in another place. His voice was loud enough to hear him well. There was no sign of any stress being felt by him, his singing remained good. After this song his guitar could be heard through the speakers. Matt made contact with the audience in a lovely way. He played some covers, including ‘Highway star’. For some, hearing this Deep Purple song acoustically might have taken some time to get used to. A few hesitantly sang along, to which Matt spontaneously responded. It was clear that he stood on stage with love for the music. Although it seemed he didn’t reach the high notes easily, he sang well. The same was the case with ‘Children of the Damned’. He encouraged the audience to sing “Whohoho” along, which they did.
Afterwards, Matt asked the audience to remain seated. Some things had to be plugged in for the performance with the band. That wait took a lot longer than expected due to bad luck.
Terra Nova
Finally, a tape resounded the intro during which the band appeared on stage. The title track ‘Terra Nova’ was played first. It soon became clear that this was going to be an energetic performance. During an instrumental piece, guitarist Mirko Fadda and Matt played side by side. Matt now played the bass and showed plenty of cool grooves. Non-stop it continued with ‘Sabotage’. Lucia La Rezza played an electric violin. She acted like a real rock chick, unimaginable that she could play so agile and so well. In a quiet section, her contribution came out extra clearly. Tempo and volume in the music increased again.
The twists and turns as well as the sudden ending were well played. People enjoyed songs like ‘Horizons’ and ‘Mayday’. Matt sang and played well, at times Mirko played super fast. Jerry Sadowski played forte where he could, but softer where he had to. The violin was definitely a valuable addition.
There was plenty of interaction between the band members. They were regularly playing side by side, or facing each other. They were all dynamic, Lucia even almost headbanging at times. Jerry’s drum solo was surprisingly built up. He drummed more quietly at first, after which he slowly increased tempo and volume. While doing so, he had a pleasant interaction with the audience. Almost unnoticed, the other band members reappeared. It went on full throttle. The audience enthusiastically clapped along.
The calm intro of ‘So Far Gone’ changed the atmosphere. People listened breathlessly. The subdued part was beautifully sung by Matt, playing the keyboard. Lucia played her violin touchingly, which showed her versatility. Matt sang the personal lyrics convincingly. Hekz may be a progressive metal band, but they impressed with this minimalist part. Lucia’s violin solo fitted in perfectly here. A little later, the rest of the band joined in, calm at first, preserving the emotion. Matt showed beautiful vocal range. Various twists and details followed, all played well. The same went for ‘The Tower’ and ‘Lifeline’.
Caerus
The second set got off to a rousing start with ‘Too Far Gone’. ‘From Obscurity To Eternity’ comes from the album ‘Caerus’ (2014). The twists and turns make it complex to play. Moreover, the high vocal range doesn’t make it easy to sing, but it all sounded good. Lucia played almost solo at times. The other musicians had some rests, these too were well played. In the songs that followed, the band continued to play and perform dynamically. Lucia and Matt played facing each other for a while and brought out the best in each other. This was rewarded with extra applause.
Matt announced the last song, the other band members had left the stage. Matt played on his keyboard, only he was highlighted. The audience was silent during his interpretation of ‘We Are Victorious’. He sang intensely, pushing the limits of his vocal ability.
‘For Our Lives’ was the encore. Now with violin instead of keys. Matt used an instrumental piece to thank ‘Serious Music Alphen’ and to introduce the band members, among others. This was just the fifth time the band performed in this line-up. Hopefully many more gigs will follow, because with this lineup, Hekz is very good.

De nieuwe line up van Hekz speelde dynamisch in het Parkvilla Theater
Na het vorige optreden van Hekz in Parkvilla Theater in Alphen aan de Rijn (2020), kwam Hekz terug met een nieuwe bezetting. Eén van de veranderingen is dat violiste Lucia La Rezza toegevoegd is aan de live line up. Ze was al in een aantal nummers te horen op het album ‘Terra Nova’ (2023). Het concert van vrijdag 12 april vond plaats in het Parkvilla Theater in Alphen aan de Rijn.
Highway star
Tegen de verwachtingen in begon frontman Matt Young met een akoestische set, waarin hij zowel eigen nummers als covers speelde. Tijdens het eerste nummer, ‘Breakout’, was er een geluidsprobleempje met zijn gitaar. Daarom zong hij, zonder microfoon, op een andere plaats verder. Zijn stem was luid genoeg om hem goed te horen. Eventuele stress was bij hem niet te merken, zijn zang bleef goed. Na dit nummer was zijn gitaar wel via de speakers te horen. Matt maakte op een leuke manier contact met het publiek.
Hij speelde enkele covers, waaronder ‘Highway star’. Voor sommigen was het misschien even wennen om dit nummer van Deep Purple akoestisch te horen. Een enkeling zong aarzelend mee, waar Matt spontaan op reageerde. Het was duidelijk dat hij met liefde voor de muziek op het podium stond. Hoewel het leek of hij de hoge tonen niet makkelijk haalde, zong hij wel goed. Dat gold ook voor ‘Children of the Damned’.
Hij moedigde het publiek aan om “Whohoho” mee te zingen, dat deed men.
Na afloop vroeg Matt het publiek te blijven zitten. Er moesten wat dingen worden aangesloten voor het optreden met de band. Dat wachten duurde door pech een stuk langer dan verwacht.
Terra Nova
Uiteindelijk klonk er via een tape het intro waarbij de band op het podium verscheen. De titeltrack ‘Terra Nova’ werd al eerste gespeeld. Al snel werd duidelijk dat dit een energiek optreden zou worden.
Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk speelden gitarist Mirko Fadda en Matt zij aan zij. Matt speelde nu de bas en liet volop gave grooves horen. Non-stop ging het verder met ‘Sabotage’. Lucia La Rezza bespeelde een elektrische viool. Dat deed ze als een heuse rock chick, onvoorstelbaar dat ze zo beweeglijk en zo goed kon spelen. In een rustig deel kwam haar bijdrage extra duidelijk naar voren. Tempo en volume in de muziek namen weer toe. Zowel de wendingen als het plotselinge eind werden goed gespeeld. Men genoot van nummers zoals ‘Horizons’ en ‘Mayday’. Matt zong en speelde goed, met vlagen speelde Mirko super snel. Jerry Sadowski speelde forte waar het kon, maar zachter waar het moest. De viool is absoluut een waardevolle toevoeging.
Er was volop interactie tussen de bandleden onderling. Ze stonden regelmatig zij aan zijn, of tegenover elkaar te spelen. Ze waren allemaal beweeglijk, Lucia stond zelfs af en toe bijna headbangend te spelen. De drumsolo van Jerry was verrassend opgebouwd. Hij drumde eerst wat rustiger waarna hij tempo en volume langzaam opvoerde. Daarbij had hij een leuke interactie met het publiek. Bijna ongemerkt kwamen de overig bandleden weer op. Vol gas ging het verder. Het publiek klapte enthousiast mee.
Door het rustige intro van ‘So Far Gone’ veranderde de sfeer. Men luisterde ademloos toe. Het ingetogen deel werd mooi gezongen door Matt, waarbij hij op het keyboard speelde. Lucia bespeelde haar viool ontroerend, dat toonde haar veelzijdigheid aan. Matt zong de persoonlijke tekst overtuigend. Hekz mag dan wel een progressieve metalband zijn, ze maakten indruk met dit minimalistische deel. De vioolsolo van Lucia paste hier perfect in. Even later viel de rest van de band bij, eerst nog kalm, waardoor de emotie bewaard bleef. Matt liet mooie vocale uithalen horen. Er volgden diverse wendingen en details, die allemaal goed gespeeld werden. Hetzelfde gold voor ‘The Tower’ en ‘Lifeline’.
Caerus
De tweede set ging met ‘Too Far Gone’ opzwepend van start. ‘From Obscurity To Eternity’ komt van het album ‘Caerus’ (2014). Door de twists and turns is het complex om te spelen. Bovendien is het door de hoge vocale uithalen niet makkelijk om te zingen, maar het klonk allemaal goed. Lucia speelde af en toe zo goed als solo. De overige muzikanten hadden enkele rusten, ook deze werden goed gespeeld. In de nummers die volgden bleef de band dynamisch spelen en performen. Lucia en Matt speelden even tegen over elkaar en haalden het beste in elkaar naar boven. Dit werd met een extra applaus beloond.
Matt kondigde de laatste song aan, de overige bandleden hadden het podium verlaten. Matt speelde op zijn keyboard, alleen hij was in het licht gezet. Het publiek was muisstil tijdens zijn vertolking van ‘We Are Victorious’. Hij zong intens, waarbij hij de grenzen opzocht van zijn vocale kunnen.
‘For Our Lives’ was de toegift. Nu met viool in plaats van toetsen. Matt gebruikte een instrumentaal stuk om onder andere ‘Serious Music Alphen’ te bedanken en om de bandleden voor te stellen. Dit was pas de vijfde keer dat de band in deze samenstelling optrad. Hopelijk volgen er nog veel meer optredens, want met deze line up is Hekz zeer goed.
