Threshold played energetic at De Bosuil.

British prog metal band Threshold is currently on their Dividing Lines Tour. Luckily, they were scheduled to perform again at De Bosuil in Weert. As there were two support acts, the doors opened already at 2pm on Sunday 23 April.

Oddland
Finnish prog band Oddland opened this afternoon. Their performance started with a tape, which sounded a bit distorted. The first song was ‘Resonance’ from their album ‘Vermilion’ (2022). Singer/guitarist Sakari Ojanen has a very unique sound, this suited the special music perfectly. His quite high range provided a good contrast to the heavier music.

In ‘Feed the Void’, guitarist Jussi Poikonen also played soprano saxophone. The rhythm and volume of the songs was surprisingly calm at times. Bassist Joni Palmroth was clearly audible even in the quiet parts.
Sakari had so much variation in pitch at times that it seemed like he was searching for the right tone. One of the drum heads was quite tight which didn’t benefit the sound. In ‘Ire’, Ville Viitanen displayed the pitch differences of the drums, his cymbals sounded less shrill in the quieter sections.
The band received deserved applause afterwards. The audience did not react so enthusiastically, but it was still early. Oddland certainly made a good impression.

Virtual Symmetry
Virtual Symmetry is an Italian/Swiss band, they opened with ‘Paradise of lies’.
The energetic Marco Pastorino has decent power to his voice, which sounded a bit hoarse at times. Guitarist Valerio Villa and bassist Alessandro Poppale made plenty of eye contact with the audience. Although it was still early in the afternoon, Marco managed to get the audience to sing along at the beginning of ‘Exodus’. Andrea Gianangeli used the same drum kit as Ville Viitanen, which made the differences in drum style stand out. His rousing style came out nicely here. The tempo and volume changes were also well played in ‘Come alive’. The audience clapped along with several songs. After two support acts, people seemed to have “woken up”.

Threshold
People were mainly here for Threshold, without show elements the men showed up. It was clear that this was the ‘Dividing Lines’ tour, as ‘Haunted’ was the first song they played. At times there was an echo on Glynn Morgan’s vocals. He went along well with the volume variations with his voice. He encouraged people to clap along, hesitantly people did clap along.

Bassist Steve Anderson and guitarist Karl Groom played wire less. This allowed them to walk across the stage with ease. Regularly they were playing next to, or opposite each other. Johanne James was somewhat in the dark, sometimes you could barely see him. But of course you could hear this drummer very well. During the subdued parts he played more gently, or held his drumsticks still for a moment. Wherever he could, he played forte, but maintaining dynamics.

Slipstream
The energy on stage and in the venue got better and better. This was partly due to ‘Slipstream’, an older ” audience favourite”. The band members interacted well with each other and with the audience. All that was really visible of keyboardist Richard West was his head. But his energy was also noticeable, and his part in music and backing vocals was certainly important. ‘Let it burn’ calls for vocal interaction with the audience, and it did.
During a somewhat calmer instrumental piece of ‘The Shire (Part 2)’, Johanne “waved” his drumsticks in the rhythm. From the audience, many joined in. Fans who already had the album sang along. There was plenty of interaction between these fantastic musicians. A number of songs, including ‘Mission Profile’ started with sampling.

Defence Condition
The balance between vocals versus music, and the instruments among themselves was fine. Only Glynn’s guitar playing was less noticeable in a number of songs. Karl sometimes played at lightning speed. But for instance in ‘Defence Condition’, he showed beautifully compelling
guitar playing. The energy on stage and in the hall remained. Glynn did not sing entirely flawlessly throughout, but his vocal power and energy were unaffected. The songs followed each other almost non-stop. In ‘Snowblind’, Steve, Karl and Richard had the backing vocals. This too was a moment of enjoyment. Far too soon, it was time for the “last” song: ‘Lost in Translation’. Steve, Glynn and Karl were playing side by side. You could clearly see that they too were enjoying this. The men had barely left the stage, or there was already clapping and calling for more.

Dividing Lines
After returning, Glynn introduced the band members, they received a well-deserved applause. The first song of the encore was ‘King of Nothing’ from the album ‘Dividing Lines’. Many fans already knew this song too, they sang along (sometimes nicely out of tune) with this nicely constructed song. ‘Small Dark Lines’ was really the very last song of this Sunday. A visit to merch table followed. After collecting signatures, the fans went home happily.

In ‘Feed the void’ speelde gitarist Jussi Poikonen ook sopraansaxofoon.

Na twee support acts leek men “wakker geworden”.

Threshold
