Ray Wilson fulfilled the high expectations at De Bosuil

Ray Wilson (ex Genesis, ex Stiltskin) has been performing at De Bosuil, in Weert, every year for a several years now. Well before the lights dimmed, the hall was pretty packed, but that’s always the case when Ray performs. That is quite right, because every show he plays is good, of course people expected the same on this last Saturday of November.

In the dark the band came on, they started with ‘There Must Be Some Other Way’. Ray’s first sung words were immediately good. He and his brother Steve played wireless. Keyboardist Kool Lyczek, multi instrumentalist Marcin Kajper, violinist Alicja Chrząszcz and drummer Mario Koszel all played on a heightened stage. Live in-ear monitor system was used. Therefore, there were no monitors on stage, which provided more space. In the parts played strongly, the violin could not be heard so well. But in the quieter played parts of ‘Home by the Sea’, for example, she could be heard very well. This song ended beautifully.

Take It Slow
Already upon hearing the first notes of ‘That’s All’, fans spontaneously clapped along. Here Marcin was still playing bass, this he put away to take his saxophone, his contribution created cheerful atmosphere. This was followed up by the more subdued ‘Take It Slow’. Mario was seated behind a drum screen, so his spirited way of drumming was slightly “muted”. This meant the rest did not have to be extra loud, so the overall sound was very good in loudness.

‘Lemon Yellow Sun’ started with solo guitar playing and vocals by Ray, the violin melded beautifully with this. Steve played his (electric) guitar compellingly. The audience, especially up front, was quiet. Some intros you recognize from the first second, especially the ticking sound of “No Son of Mine. Fans spontaneously sang “Hoo hoo” along. Between some songs, Ray told something, with or without a joke.

‘The Carpet Crawlers’ was welcomed with cheers. Ray beautifully sang solo was accompanied by Kool on keys. Because the microphone was wireless, he could walk around without the hindrance of a cable. He had brought his own microphone stand. His name was milled into the top of the stand, his initials on the base of the stand. Again, fans spontaneously sang along. Steve played with emotion. This old Genesis song was rewarded with generous applause, which was visibly appreciated by the band members. One beautiful song followed another, making the first set flew by.

Makes Me Think of Home
After the break they started with ‘Calling All Stations,’ Alicja’s special way of playing the violin suited well with the rocking elements of this cool Genesis song. ‘Makes Me Think of Home’ is a song by Ray, from his album with the same name. There was an echo on some parts of Ray’s vocals. This was one of the songs in which Marcin played the flute. The violin playing in the minimalist part was beautiful. Marcin had traded the flute for the saxophone, rightly he received applause. The softly sung part was very beautiful, as was Steve’s subdued, compelling guitar playing. Fans responded enthusiastically to the intro of ‘In the Air Tonight’ and sang along enthusiastically. Reactions to the intro to ‘Solsbury Hill’ were even more exuberant. Ray and Steve played on acoustic guitar. The atmosphere on stage and in the hall was upbeat. Alicja walked to the front and was playing half dancing. Marcin played the flute and lifted one leg ala Jethro Tull. A varied set of Genesis, Stiltskin and his own songs was played, the subdued ‘Alone’ (from the live album Time and Distance), definitely fit right in. Steve and Ray’s singing together was superb. Here Mario played suitably soft drums (on a different drum kit). In a single other song, he occasionally drummed perhaps just a little too fiercely.

Stiltskin
The lighting was the finishing touch: the solos were beautifully lit. During subdued songs like ‘Symptomatic’, the light was atmospheric. In ‘Land of Confusion’ (the last song), the light was more “exuberant.” Ray encouraged the audience to clap along, which of course people did. Some sang the entire lyrics, along, but everyone roared “Ooho” loudly along. Marcin played cool bass grooves. The band had not yet left the stage, or there were already loud calls and claps for an encore. Ray returned on his own, singing “You are…” to which the audience spontaneously responded with “so beautiful.” There were some jokes and laughter.
Ray asked, “Can you sing?” The answer was a resounding “yes.” He had not yet sung the words “Hey little girl” or out of many mouths sounded, “is your daddy home”. Many sang along with the entire song. This became a beautiful medley, with ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ (Bob Dylan ) the band was complete again. They closed with the Stiltskin song ‘Inside’. Normally, (most) of the band members come to the merchandise table after the concert. Since the Covid isn’t over yet, Ray (and his band) didn’t want to take the risk. Although of course it was regretted, the fans were very understanding. People can look back on a very successful evening. Because Ray Wilson fulfilled the high expectations.

In het donker kwamen de band op, ze begonnen met ‘There Must Be Some Other Way’. Ray’s eerste gezongen woorden waren meteen goed.

Take It Slow
That’s All’ klapten fans spontaan mee.

Makes Me Think of Home

Ray vroeg: “Kunnen jullie zingen?”

1 gedachte over “Ray Wilson fulfilled the high expectations at De Bosuil”
