Henrik Freischlader has played at De Bosuil several times. The last time was just over a year ago. Sunday afternoon 21 April he was back in Weert (The Netherlands). This time with a another bass player. The regular bass player, Armin Alic was ill. Fortunately, René Pütz was able to fill in at the very last minute so that the concert could go on. It had been 20 years since René played with Henrik, but there was absolutely not a trace of that. From the opening track ‘Free’, he played along as if there had been no break for years. Apart from cool guitar playing by Henrik, there was beautiful organ playing by Moritz Fuhrhop. That earned an intermittent applause. Drummer Hardy Fischötter played fanatically, playing several short pieces of solo. René played beautiful grooves.
Disappointed Women
Henrik gave the band members enough space to show their skills. As a result, there was a real band on stage instead of a solo artist accompanied by a band. All band members have a calm, subdued way of performing. But their love and enjoyment of the music was clear. Not only the tempo and volume changes, but also the rests in ‘Disappointed Women’ were well played.
The subdued part of ‘New Beginning’ (from the album ‘Missing Pieces’) was also appreciated by the audience, people were mainly quiet. Pace and volume were turned up again, followed by another subdued part played. Here Moritz’s Hammond playing came out beautifully. Almost imperceptibly, tempo and volume increased again. After playing for half an hour, the band took a break.

After the break, the band started with ‘I wanne go’, from the album ‘Recorded by Martin Meinschäfer II’ (2022). This song too has a very pleasant flow. As expected and hoped, ‘The Question’ was also played this afternoon. The instrumental start is compelling. Henrik sang the words sensitively, this came out extra well in the minimalist piece played. Most visitors have heard Henrik sing and play this before. Yet again, people were impressed by both the words he sang and the music. The instrumental piece with intense guitar playing was cool, this was rightly rewarded with extra applause. The build-up to the end was appropriately quiet.
Despite Henrik playing ‘Sky is crying’ on several occasions, it continues to be enjoyed every time. The tempo and volume changes were well played. One of the strings of Henrik’s guitar broke, but he just played on. The passion remained visible and palpable. This applied to both the subdued parts and the intensely played parts. Regularly, extra applause sounded from the audience. The men’s faces showed that they appreciated this. During the pleasantly long pianissimo passage the audience was silent. This gave the emotion of the music extra impact. Tempo and volume were pushed up for a moment, then it continued subdued. This was repeated a few times. This was an intense and magnificently sung and played version.
In the last song, Henrik and Moritz challenged each other. First they took turns playing, then they played together, faster and faster. Then Hardy and René played together. Moritz had left the stage, Henrik stood at the side enjoying what these two men played. René extracted surprisingly high notes from his bass. The audience responded enthusiastically. Especially during Hardy’s solo, you could clearly hear the pitch differences of the drums. At times, he played so fast that the drumsticks “faded”. After his solo, the four men played together again, before leaving the stage a little later.
Bad Dreams
There was a lot of shouting and whistling for an encore; one did not have to wait long before the band reappeared. The choice of ‘Bad Dreams’ (with its recognisable intro) as an encore was perhaps not very surprising, yet the audience enjoyed this well-played song. Hendrik managed to touch the audience again with his guitar playing. As the band played quieter and quieter, the audience remained silent. Henrik briefly sang without a microphone after which the tempo and volume of the music immediately increased. The build-up to the end was beautiful. The band treated the audience to a concert totalling 1 hour and about 45 minutes
Henrik Freischlader speelde bescheiden maar intens in De Bosuil
Henrik Freischlader was al vaker te gast in De Bosuil. De laatste keer was net iets meer dan een jaar geleden. Zondagmiddag 21 april was hij terug in Weert. Deze keer met een andere bassist. De vaste bassist, Armin Alic was ziek. Gelukkig kon René Pütz op het allerlaatste moment invallen zodat het concert door kon gaan. Het was al weer 20 jaar geleden dat speelde 20 jaar geleden René met Henrik speelde, maar daar was niets van de merken. Vanaf het openingsnummer ‘Free’ speelde hij mee alsof er geen jaren lange break was geweest. Behalve gaaf gitaarspel van Henrik, was er mooi orgelspel van Moritz Fuhrhop. Dat leverde een tussentijds applaus op. Drummer Hardy Fischötter speelde fanatiek, en speelde diverse korte stukjes solo. René speelde mooie grooves.
Disappointed Women
De bandleden kregen van Henrik de ruimte kregen om hun kunnen te laten horen. Hierdoor stond er een echte band op het podium in plaats van een solo artiest die begeleid werd door een band. Alle bandleden hebben een rustige, ingetogen manier van performen. Maar hun liefde en plezier voor de muziek was duidelijk. Niet alleen de tempo-en volume wisselingen, maar ook de rusten in ’Disappointed Women’ werden goed gespeeld.
Ook het ingetogen deel van ‘New Beginning’ (van het album ‘Missing Pieces’) werd gewaardeerd door het publiek, men was overwegend stil. Tempo en volume werden weer opgeschroefd, gevolgd door nog een ingetogen gespeeld deel. Hier kwam het Hammondspel van Moritz mooi naar voren. Bijna ongemerkt namen tempo-en volume weer toe. Na een half uurtje gespeeld te hebben nam de band even pauze.

Na de pauze startte de band met ‘I wanne go’, van het album ‘Recorded by Martin Meinschäfer II’ (2022). Ook dit nummer heeft een hele aangename flow. Zoals verwacht en gehoopt werd ‘The Question’ ook deze middag gespeeld. De instrumentale start is meeslepend. Henrik zong de woorden gevoelig, dit kwam extra goed tot zijn recht in het minimalistisch gespeelde stuk. De meeste bezoekers hebben Henrik dit vaker horen zingen en spelen. Toch was men weer onder de indruk van zowel de woorden die hij zong, als de muziek. Het instrumentale stuk met intens gitaarspel was gaaf, dit werd terecht beloond met een extra applaus. De opbouw naar het einde was passend rustig.
Sky is crying
Ondanks dat Henrik ‘Sky is crying’ vaker speelt, blijf het iedere keer genieten. De tempo-en volumewisselingen werden goed gespeeld. Één van de snaren van Henriks gitaar brak, maar hij speelde gewoon door. De passie bleef zichtbaar en voelbaar. Dat gold zowel voor de ingetogen delen, als de intens gespeelde delen. Regelmatig klonk er extra applaus van uit de zaal. Aan de gezichten van de mannen was te zien dat ze dit waardeerden. Bij het aangenaam lange pianissimo gespeelde deel was het publiek stil. Hierdoor kwam de emotie van de muziek extra goed tot zijn recht. Tempo en volume werden héél even opgestuwd, ingetogen ging het verder. Dit herhaalde zich een paar keer. Dit was een intens en geweldig gezongen en gespeelde versie.
In het laatste nummer daagden Henrik en Moritz elkaar uit. Eerst speelden ze om de beurt, daarna speelden ze samen, steeds sneller en sneller. Vervolgens speelden Hardy en René samen. Moritz had het podium verlaten, Henrik stond aan de zijkant te genieten van wat deze twee mannen speelden. René haalde verrassend hoge tonen uit zijn bas. Het publiek reageerde enthousiast. Vooral tijdens de solo van Hardy hoorde je de toonhoogte verschillen van de drums goed. Met vlagen speelde hij zo snel, dat de drumstokken “vervaagde”. Na zijn solo speelden de vier mannen weer samen, om even later het podium weer te verlaten.
Bad Dreams
Er werd flink geroepen en gefloten om een toegift, lang hoefde men niet te wachten voordat de band weer verscheen. De keuze voor ‘Bad Dreams’ (met zijn herkenbare intro) als toegift was misschien niet heel verrassend, toch genoten de bezoekers van dit goed gespeelde nummer. Hendrik wist met zijn gitaarspel weer een gevoelige snaar te raken. Toen de band steeds zachter speelde, bleef het publiek stil. Henrik zong even zonder microfoon waarna tempo en volume van de muziek meteen toenamen. De opbouw naar het einde was mooi. De band trakteerde de bezoekers op een concert van totaal 1 uur en zo’n 45 minuten.
