Wille and the Bandits (kortweg WATB) is een roots rockband uit Engeland. Dit drietal haalt hun inspiratie uit de jaren ’60 en ’70. In hun rock mengen veel stijlen, zoals dance en hiphop. Ze gebruiken een breed scala aan instrumenten waardoor ze een heel eigen, veelzijdige sound hebben. Ze toeren om hun vijfde studioalbum ‘Paths’ (dat op 1 februari verschijnt*) onder de aandacht te brengen. Op zaterdagavond 19 januari stonden ze in Paradox in Tilburg. De deuren waren nauwelijks open of de eerste mensen zochten een mooi (zit)plaatsje aan één van de tafeltjes. Wille and the Bandits kwamen bijna ongemerkt tevoorschijn. Er klonk nog muziek uit de speakers van Paradox. Zodra deze tape stopte, zette gitarist/zanger Wille Edwards ‘Miles away’ in. Enkele woorden werden meegezongen door drummer Andrew Naumann en bassist Matt Brooks.

Paths
Wille gebruikte een gitaarwissel om het publiek te begroeten. ‘Make love’ komt van het album ‘Paths’. Zoals altijd zong en speelde Wille met bezieling. Matt bewoog niet alleen met zijn hoofd, maar met zijn hele lichaam mee in de flow van de muziek. Andrew zong delen mee, hij speelde gefocust en strak. Matt kondigde ‘Scared of the sun’ aan. Hij begon solo op zijn zessnarige bas, met beide handen op de steel. Andrew gebruikte stokken met zachte uiteinden om zijn cimbalen heel zacht te laten rinkelen. Wille zong en speelde ingetogen. Inmiddels was het in de zaal muisstil geworden. De onderlinge, non verbale communicatie was nauwelijks zichtbaar, maar was er wel degelijk. ‘Judgement day’ komt ook van ‘Paths’. Het werd zeer goed gespeeld, maar de fans moesten blijkbaar nog even wennen aan dit nummer, het applaus was een beetje aarzelend.
Matt haalde zijn contrabas tevoorschijn, en Andrew de djembé op de standaard. Wille startte ‘Mammon’ zo goed als solo, hij wist ons te raken. Matt beroerde zijn contrabas zacht, teder bijna. Andrew bespeelde de djembé met uiterste precisie. De zin

“Won’t let you go”

werd door de drie mannen gezongen, weer viel de fantastische blend van hun stemmen op. Tussen enkele nummers door vertelde Wille iets, bijvoorbeeld over panne met de bestelbus. Dit was de inleiding voor ‘Trouble down the line’.
Daarna speelde Wille ingetogen op zijn lapsteel. Andrew bleef achter zijn drumkit zitten, en pakte de andere djembé erbij. Veel fans hadden al in de gaten dat dit het intro was voor ‘Black Magic Woman’. Ondertussen had Andrew stokken met zachte uiteinden gepakt. Matt maakte met zijn bas de flow compleet. Het tempo ging omhoog en Andrew gebruikte zijn handen weer voor het ritme. Even later had hij een stok in de ene hand, en bespeelde hij met de andere zijn djembé. Het plezier straalde er bij dit drietal vanaf.

Bad news en Angel
Na de pauze kwam in eerste instantie alleen Matt terug. Hij speelde de eerste, rustige klanken van ‘Bad news’. Wille en Andrew volgden snel, het eerste stuk was ingetogen gespeeld, het vervolg was stevig. Wille zong met mooie, rauwe uithalen. Vooral de uithalen die bijna solo waren, waren indrukwekkend. De instrumentale rusten werden super strak gespeeld. Het klein gespeelde deel was fantastisch, Wille bespeelde de lapsteel met pure passie. De passie bleef, dit tweede deel leek nòg beter te zijn dan voor de pauze. Van hun spiksplinter nieuwe album speelden ze onder andere ‘Victim of the night’ en ‘Watch you grow’. Bij deze laatste bespeelde Andrew de ‘tongue drum’, een soort houten kistje. Mooi om de klanken hiervan nu live te zien en te horen. Matt gebruikte regelmatig de foot piano die bij zijn pedalboard stond opgesteld. Dit drietal is enorm muzikaal, live komt hun diversiteit nog beter tot uiting!
Matt en Wille stonden tijdens uptempo stukken zo nu en dan tegenover elkaar te spelen, ze straalden van plezier. Ook klein gespeelde stukken werden prachtig gespeeld.

Tot groot genoegen werd ‘Angel’ een ode aan de overleden moeder van Wille, ook vanavond gespeeld. Wille en Matt startten minimalistisch, het was muisstil in de zaal. Andrew bespeelde met zachte stokken zijn cimbalen uiterst zacht. Na een korte gitaarsolo van Wille vlogen tempo en volume omhoog. Andrew is een meester in het drummen van accenten, dat liet hij ook hier horen. Matt had zijn bas op zijn rug en bespeelde de djembé. Het publiek klapte spontaan mee op het opzwepende ritme. Wille bespeelde met één had zijn steelgitaar, in zijn andere hand had hij een egg shaker. Tijdens een ingetogen stuk, speelde Matt op zijn bas. De emotie was niet alleen af te lezen op zijn gezicht, het was ook voelbaar! Geheel terecht kreeg hij tussentijds applaus. De emotie in Wille’s stem was hartverscheurend.
