Wille and the Bandits – Paths

Wille and the Bandits is een roots rockband uit Cornwall (Engeland).

Het intro van ‘Keep it on the Down-low’ is ritmisch.

De ritmesectie laat ‘How Long’ in een heerlijk mid-tempo starten.

Find my Way’ heeft een rockende start.

This translated review in English is an unadjusted translation from Dutch by

Wille and the Bandits is a roots rock band from Cornwall (England). Because of the wide range of instruments and influences from music genres they have a unique sound. Paths‘ is the fifth studio album of this trio, and will be released on February 1st. About two weeks before that they will perform three times in the Netherlands, one of these concerts has been sold out for quite some time.

The modest opening of this album immediately attracts my attention. In an up-tempo piece Wille Edwards sings a big piece of lyrics with inspiration. Andrew Naumann drums tightly, while maintaining dynamics. The little background vocals provide a nice addition. When played live, the words ‘One Way‘ in particular will give a nice interaction with the fans, so that the rousing character of this song will come into its own.

Although the tempo in ‘Make Love‘ is quite high, this is a lyrics that feels like a protest song. Matt Brooks walks through it with the bass.
Again the backing vocals have been added fantastic. Some of Wille’s words come in, they come into their own even better because of the short rests that follow.

Four Million Days‘ starts with guitar, strings and subdued vocals. We know for a long time that Wille can convey the emotion like no other. He shows that here.
Tempo and volume are screwed up in a nice way, Wille sings with more power. But when tempo and volume go back a bit, he sings softer. The emotion remains to be heard in his voice. Background vocals merge nicely with the music. This song is also beautifully constructed both in terms of vocals and music. The instrumental piece is super. The small part played at the end is so beautiful!

The intro of ‘Keep it on the Down-low‘ is rhythmic. The vocals are staccato, here you can hear influences of hiphop and rap. They ingeniously mix this with rock. Again, the countless details are well distributed over the headphones. Some words of the background vocals sound subtle in the background. Other parts are more present. Again I feel the live experience!

The rhythm section lets ‘How Long‘ start in a delicious mid-tempo. This song is an ode to Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) and about his fight with the depression. The emotion in the vocals and the words touch me. Also during a good instrumental piece, they manage to convey emotion. Will produces good vocal vocals, with a slightly rough edge. Especially his end outburst cuts through your soul.

Find my Way‘ has a rocking start. “Freedom” is the first word Wille sings. This too is a lyrics, which is about finding your way in this world where money seems to rule. The percussion again sublime. Heavier and lighter’ music alternate fantastically. The tempo goes up for a while, before it ends tightly and unexpectedly.

Wille’s emotional vocals are supported by a little bit of music. Retribution‘ brings you into a wonderful flow. Twists flow into each other, sometimes the tempo is quite high. You feel the end coming, you think… But there is an unexpected twist in the music, this is so cool!
That should have taken a little longer, then the impact would have been greater.

A few songs end with a fade out, which is sometimes a pity. When played live they will undoubtedly put a fantastic end to it. Impressive, small played parts are interspersed with exciting super pieces. You hear a lot of instruments and regularly quite a few layers. These great musicians have built up the songs fantastic. Paths‘ has become a very good album!
