Het aantal bands/artiesten waarmee bassist en zanger Marco Mendoza toerde is niet op één hand te tellen. Vorig jaar toerde hij met The Dead Daisies. Daarbij werd De Bosuil in Weert niet overgeslagen. Op 10 april brak Marco de week doormidden door nogmaals naar De Bosuil te komen, ditmaal als soloartiest.
Op deze ‘Viva La Rock Tour’ nam Marco twee jonge muzikanten mee: drummer Kyle Hughes en gitarist Tommy Gentry. De lichten in de zaal waren nog aan toen Tommy zijn gitaar ging stemmen. Kyle verscheen even later. Wie hem niet had zien komen, hoorde hem vanzelf: want hij zorgde voor een donderende start op de drums. Daarbij viel het goede geluid van de drumkit direct op. Marco was al te horen voordat hij op het podium was. Hij speelde wireless, daardoor kon hij al spelend tevoorschijn komen. Deze ijdele rocker gebruikt nog altijd oogpotlood en zijn zwarte jaren zijn zorgvuldig in model gebracht. Hij begroette zijn fans met “Hello Weert!” De zin “I’ve been waiting so long to play for you” zong hij een aantal keer achterelkaar.

Viva La Rock
Non stop volgende ‘Sweetest emotions’, dit komt van zijn nieuwste album, ‘Viva La Rock’. Tommy en Kyle deden de achtergrondzang. Als Kyle niet hoefde te zingen, was hij aan het headbangen of aan het twirlen. Er was volop interactie op het podium.
De rookmachine blies enkele slierten rook, dit werd prachtig in het gele licht gezet. Zo hadden de bezoekers veel moois om naar te kijken. De sfeer was vanaf het begin prima. Doordat de zaal niet zo vol was, hadden de fans de ruimte om te headbangen. Marco genoot er zichtbaar van, en bedankte zijn fans voor het komen. Hij relativeerde:

“Zonder jullie heb ik geen carrière”.

Regelmatig gaf hij een plectrum weg, meestal aan een vrouwelijke fan. Één dame kreeg niet alleen een plectrum in haar hand, hij gaf ook een stevige kus op haar hand.

Op ‘Viva La Rock’ staan een paar covers, waaronder ‘Hey Baby’. Dit nummer is bekend van Ted Nugent, waarmee Marco in het verleden ook speelde. In het klein gespeeld deel
Kyle liet zijn drumstokken met rust. Marco vroeg om met zijn allen met de vingers mee te knippen. Dat was een mooi moment, het geluid van ‘knippende vingers’ samen met slechts een vleugje muziek. De opbouw terug naar tempo en volume verliep perfect. Het teamwork op het podium was dus zeer goed. Door middel van subtiele (non)verbale communicatie wisten Tommy en Kyle wat Marco van plan was.

‘Lettin’ Go
In ‘Lettin’ Go’ improviseerde Marco door solo met zijn stem allerlei geluidjes te maken, waarbij zijn hoge bereik opviel. Nadat hij”‘One..two” gezegd had, vielen Tommy en Kyle weer bij. De sfeer was uitgelaten, men klapte volop mee met het opzwepende ritme wat dit drietal door de zaal heen slingerde. Toch riep Marco nog:

“I can’t hear you!!”

In het uptempo stuk van ‘Hole in my pocket’ (van Neal Schon) stond Tommy aan de rand van het podium, vlak voor de fans. Vliegensvlug gingen zijn vingers over de snaren. Dit nummer liep over in ‘Give peace a chance’. Natuurlijk werd dit door (bijna) iedereen meegezongen. Marco had alle gelegenheid om heen en weer te lopen. Er was immers geen snoer dat hem tegenhield. Daarom liep hij een rondje door de zaal, daarbij speelde hij solo. Vocaal ondersteund door de aanwezigen die bleven zingen. Eenmaal terug op het podium zei hij:

“Guys, you can do better than that”.

Dus werd er harder gezongen. Subliem ging het rockend terug naar ‘Hole in my pocket’. Dit drietal rockte verder met nummers zoals ‘Look out for the boys’. Op ‘commando’ van Marco zong men “oohoohh”. Na afloop waren Marco’s woorden

“You sounded beautiful”.

God bless the child
Marco speelt iedere avond een andere, maar altijd een gevarieerde set, vaak met behoorlijke contrasten. Ineens was er minimalistische muziek en het geluid van vingerknippen, gevolgd door de integere zang van Marco. Vol emotie zong hij zijn met licht ruwe stem ‘God bless the child’ op aangrijpende manier. Kyle beroerde zijn cimbalen zorgvuldig. Het publiek luisterde ademloos, uit de zaal was er geen ander geluid te horen dan het knippen van de vingers. Hierdoor was de sfeer sereen, wat kan minimalistisch toch mooi zijn! Met een Nederlands “Dank je wel” liet Marco zijn waardering hiervoor blijken.
Na een paar ballads was het weer tijd voor stevige muziek. De mannen bruisten nog van de energie. Marco en Tommy stonden naast elkaar, beide met één voet op de monitor. Beide hadden ze de hals van hun (bas)gitaar naar het plafond gericht. Kyle knalde er flink op los. Met opzwepende nummers zoals ‘Chinatown’ werd er in de zaal uitbundig gedanst, geklapt en gezongen.
Deze sfeer bleef de rest van de avond. Bij de toegift werd er met ‘Viva la Rock’ nog een schepje bovenop gedaan. Marco stond als een jonge vent springend te spelen.
Marco had Tommy en Kyle al diverse keren geprezen om hun kunnen. Ook de fans had hij al een aantal keren bedankt. Maar nogmaals liet hij zijn dankbaarheid blijken. En zo eindigde na 1,5 uur deze ‘Viva La Rockshow. Dit was een heuse ‘American Style Rock Show met als hoofdpersoon de ijdele rocker Marco Mendoza.
