De rockband The Dead Daisies bestaat uit vijf grootheden uit de (hard)rock. Ik noem er alvast twee: zanger John Corabi (Mötley Crüe, The Scream) en gitarist Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio). Ze houden de rock uit de jaren ’70 en begin jaren ’80 levend. Deze ervaren rockers zetten altijd een geweldige liveshow neer. Op dinsdagavond 27 november mocht dit vijftal De Bosuil in Weert plat spelen. Maar eerst werden we opgewarmd door de Britse hardrockband Voodoo Vegas.
Er was amper een noot gespeeld toen frontman Lawrence Case begroette ons enthousiast met:
“Are you ready to rock tonight? Let’s make some noise!!”
Dat deden ze direct met ‘Don’t need your love’. Deze showman benutte het volle podium goed, en gebruikte de microfoonstandaard in zijn performance. Gitarist Meryl Hamilton was de enige dame op het podium, maar zij deed niet onder voor haar mannelijke collega’s. Er was geen sprake van rivaliteit tussen de twee gitaristen. Jon Dawson kreeg alle ruimte om zijn kunnen te laten horen. Er was ruim voldoende interactie tussen de bandleden. Ook bassist Ash Moulton was behoorlijk beweeglijk. Drummer Mike Rigler ‘ramde’ er al headbangend flink op los. Het laatste nummer was ‘King without a crown’. Ook dit werd goed gespeeld. Het einde werd langer gerekt, nog één keer gingen tempo en volume omhoog. Voodoo Vegas was een goede support act, maar we waren duidelijk voor The Dead Daisies gekomen.
The Dead Daisies
Drummer Deen Castronovo (Journey, Bad English) kwam als eerste het nog donkere podium op. Frontman John Corabi verscheen als laatste. De energie spatte er meteen vanaf. Gitaristen David Lowy (Red Phoenix, Mink) en Doug stonden zij aan zij te spelen. Ze speelden allemaal ‘wire less’ dus konden ze moeiteloos heen en weer lopen, daar maakte bassist Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake) ook gebruik van. Er gebeurde zoveel dat je ogen te kort kwam. Dit beloofde een avond vol vuurwerk te worden. Deen is het nieuwste bandlid, en was al duidelijk een onderdeel van dit fantastische team. Tussen twee nummers door riep John:
” Are you ready to get craaazy? Are you ready to make some nooooise?”
Daar werd luidkeels “YEAH!!” op geantwoord. Zoals verwacht speelden ze ‘Make some noise’. Fans zongen mee, toch werden we nog meer opgezweept, want John zong “Sing it louder, louder”. Hij wond de fans om zijn vinger. Zelfs de aankondiging naar het volgende nummer deed hij met flair. Voor aanvang van ‘Dead and gone’ vroeg hij om “Yeah Yeah” mee te zingen. Natuurlijk brulden we volop mee. The Dead Daisies rockten dat het een lieve lust was. De decibelmeter liep eigenlijk te hoog op.
‘Resurrected’ gaat in het kort over opkrabbelen uit een moeilijke periode, ondanks dat anderen je ‘veroordeelden/neersabelden’. John zong dit met volle overtuiging. ‘Last time I saw the sun’ begon met een fantastische solo van Doug. Terwijl de rest van het podium donker was, stond hij in het licht. Één van de covers die gespeeld werden was Join together’ (van de Who). Het refrein leverde een geweldig samenspel op tussen ‘The Daisies’ en de fans. Heel subtiel bewoog John met zijn vingertoppen, waarop we luidkeels meezongen. We deden wat hij wilde, we waren als was in zijn handen. Het was te zien dat deze mannen graag spelen en van hun fans houden. Terecht dat ze liefkozend ‘The Daisies’ genoemd worden.
Na dit rockende geweld werd er een akoestische sessie ingelast. Vijf toprockers zaten op een rij. Het ruwe randje op John’s stem in ‘Set me free’ was prachtig. Deen en Marco deden de achtergrondzang. Hun stemmen vormden een mooie blend. De verandering van sfeer op de bühne was indrukwekkend, men luisterde ademloos toe. In ‘Maggie May’ had Deen de leadzang. Achter zijn drumkit zag je zijn charisma al, nu was dat zelfs voelbaar. Bovendien zong hij fantastisch, ook de hoge noten haalde hij makkelijk. De mannen genoten zichtbaar van deze akoestische nummers. John vroeg of de lichten in de zaal uit mochten, zodat we met onze mobieltjes voor licht konden zorgen. Zo werd ‘Let it be’ op akoestische wijze vertolkt in zee van licht.
Hierna werden ‘Burn it down’ en andere rocknummers gespeeld. De energie knalde door De Bosuil. Deze geboren rockers straalden uit dat performen hun lust en hun leven is. Zelfs van het voorstellen van de bandleden werd iets bijzonders gemaakt. Na iedere introductie speelden ze een deel van een hit. Na het voorstellen van Deen werd ‘I love rock and roll’ van Joan Jett & The Blackhearts gespeeld, als vanzelf zongen we mee.
Er was geen spoor van vermoeidheid bij ‘The Daisies’ te bekennen, dus rockten ze voluit door. Na ‘Helter Skelter’ vertrokken ze backstage. Natuurlijk kregen we de toegift waar we zo hard om schreeuwden. Na ‘Mexico’ denderde ‘Highway star’ door de zaal. Doug bespeelde met zijn handen zijn pedalboard. Vervolgens rolde hij over de vloer.
Toen hij weer stond, ging Marco naast hem spelen. Nog één keer gingen deze rockers helemaal los. Alles mocht, niks was te gek. Dit werd bijgestaan door een wervelende lichtshow. Met een onvoorstelbaar goede show hebben ‘The Daisies’ het bewijs geleverd:

Drummer Mike Rigler ‘rammed’ headbangingly on it. The last song was ‘King without a crown‘. This was also played well. The end was stretched longer, one more time tempo and volume went up. Voodoo Vegas was a good support act, but we clearly came for The Dead Daisies.

This promised to be an evening full of fireworks. Deen is the newest band member, and was already clearly a part of this fantastic team. Between songs John shouted:

They answered loudly “YEAH!!”. As expected they played ‘Make some noise‘. Fans sang along, yet we were swept up even more, because John sang “Sing it louder, louder”. He wound the fans around his finger. Even the announcement to the next song he did with flair. Before the start of ‘Dead and gone‘ he asked to sing ‘Yeah Yeah‘ along. Of course we roared along to the fullest. The Dead Daisies rocked that it was a sweet lust. The decibel meter actually rose too high.
‘Resurrected‘ is in short about getting out of a difficult period, despite the fact that others ‘condemned you’. John sang this with full conviction. ‘Last time I saw the sun‘ started with a fantastic solo by Doug. While the rest of the stage was dark, he was in the light. One of the covers that were played was ‘Join together‘ (from the Who). The chorus resulted in a great interaction between ‘The Daisies’ and the fans. John moved very subtly with his fingertips, on which we sang along loudly. We did what he wanted, we were like wax in his hands. It was evident that these guys loved to play and love their fans. Rightly they are affectionately called ‘The Daisies‘.
After this rocking violence there was an acoustic session. Five top rockers were in a row. The rough edge on John’s voice in ‘Set me free‘ was beautiful. Dane and Marco did the backing vocals. Their voices formed a beautiful blend. The change of atmosphere on stage was impressive, they listened breathlessly. In ‘Maggie May‘ Deen had the lead vocals. Behind his drum kit you could already see his charisma, now that was even palpable. Moreover, he sang fantastic, he also reached the high notes easily. The men visibly enjoyed these acoustic songs. John asked if the lights in the hall could be switched off, so we could provide light with our mobile phones. This is how ‘Let it be‘ was played in an acoustic way in the sea of light.
After this ‘Burn it down‘ and other rock songs were played. The energy popped through De Bosuil. These born rockers radiated that performing is their lust and their life. Even the presentation of the band members was made something special. After every introduction they played a part of a hit. After introducing Dane, ‘I love rock and roll’ by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts was played, we sang along naturally.
There was no sign of fatigue at ‘The Daisies‘, so they rocked on. After ‘Helter Skelter‘ they left backstage. Of course we got the encore we shouted about so loudly. After ‘Mexico‘ ‘Highway star‘ thundered through the hall. Doug played with his hands his pedalboard. Then he rolled over the floor.
When he was standing again, Marco started playing next to him. One more time these rockers went completely loose. Everything was allowed, nothing was too crazy. This was assisted by a whirling light show. With an incredibly good show, ‘The Daisies‘ proved it:
