Begin dit jaar verscheen ‘Stripped’, het nieuwste album Wilson & Wakeman. Dit duo bestaat uit Damian Wilson en Adam Wakeman. Damian’s naam staat vermeld bij de line up van meer dan 70 albums. Hij was onder andere frontman van Threshold. Maar behalve rock/metal zanger speelde deze alleskunner de rol van Jean Valjean in de Engelse tourversie van Les Misérables. Adam kennen we als toetsenist en gitarist van bijvoorbeeld Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath. Met zijn vader, Rick Wakeman, bracht hij negen albums uit. Poppodium Grenswerk in Venlo gebruikt soms de Joriskerk (Venlo) als locatie voor concerten. Hier vond het concert van Wilson & Wakeman plaats op zaterdagavond 6 april.
Ruim voordat de deuren van de uitverkochte kerk opengingen, stonden er heel wat mensen buiten te wachten. Het eerste speciale moment van de avond was al op het moment dat de deuren open werden gedaan. Daar stond Damian in eigen persoon om zijn fans bij binnenkomst één voor één te begroeten.

Rond half negen kwamen Adam en Damian onder luid applaus via een zijdeur binnen. Adam ging achter zijn piano zitten, hij zat behoorlijk in het donker. Op Damian stond een kleine spot gericht. De eerste woorden die hij zong bezorgende menigeen kippenvel. Dit waren de woorden die bij ‘Bring him home’ horen, een lied uit de musical Les Misérables. Damian begon klein en ingetogen, even later klonk zijn stem als een klok. Hij eindigde klein, helder en zeer hoog. Fans weten dat hij dit kan, toch is het keer op keer indrukwekkend om zijn enorme bereik en power live mee te maken.

Seek for adventure
In ‘Seek for adventure’ zongen Adam en Damian samen. De kleur van hun stem verschilt enorm, toch vormt dit verschil een fantastische blend. Het publiek was muisstil, dit gaf het concert een meerwaarde. Doordat Adam en Damian af en toe wat op humoristische wijze vertelde, werd er tussen de nummers door gelachen. Adam en Damian straalden warmte uit, en gaven je het gevoel dat ze je vrienden waren. Dit had de gezellige, intieme sfeer van een huiskamerconcert. Damian vertelde een anekdote over dat er tijdens een ander concert gratis thee was voor iedereen, dit noemde hij tea routine. Aansluitend plaagden de mannen elkaar, er werd volop gelachen. De sfeer veranderde direct toen Adam de eerste noten zijn soloperformance speelde. Dit was Bob Dylan’s ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right’. Het publiek was meteen muisstil, en dat bleef zo. Men was diep onder de indruk door zoveel emotie in zang en muziek, óók Adam wist iedereen duidelijk te raken.

Zo nu en dan pakte Damian de microfoon uit de standaard en liep het podium af. Hij stond vlak voor de voorste kerkbanken te zingen. Daarbij maakte hij oogcontact, zowel met de mensen op de eerste rij, als achter in de kerk. Iedere noot die hij zong was loepzuiver, ook de enorme powervolle uithalen, indrukwekkend! Het laatste nummer voor de pauze was ‘The big day’ van Headscape.

“Let me hear you”

zei Damian. De bezoekers zongen ingetogen en respectvol “Ahahaha, Ahaaa” mee.

 

Stripped
Na de pauze begon Adam met

“In 1971 was ik nog een zaadje in mijn vaders linker testikel…”.

Het publiek schoot in de lach en Adam ook. Dit was een humoristische inleiding voor ‘Life on Mars’ van David Bowie. Adams vader heeft op het originele album van David meegespeeld. De cover hiervan staat op ‘Stripped’. Met zijn onvoorstelbare, hoge bereik zong Damian een hele andere versie dan David. Het ene moment zong hij uit volle borst, het andere moment zong hij klein. Hij wist alles perfect te doseren. Dit werd prachtig aangevuld door Adam’s sprankelende pianospel.

Adam kan niet alleen met piano fantastisch overweg, hij is natuurlijk ook een goed gitarist. Dat liet hij horen in ‘Catch you when you fall’. Geheel solo zong en speelde hij klein en ingetogen, daarmee wist hij weer een gevoelige snaar te raken.
Damian vertelde over de tour die hij in het najaar gaat doen ter ere van zijn 50e verjaardag. Hij noemde de datum en locatie van het enige concert dat in Nederland plaats zal vinden.
Adam haalde herinneringen op over zijn tijd bij Ozzy Osbourne en Black Sabbath. Van deze laatste band speelde hij ‘Iron man’. Dit werd een hele bijzondere instrumentale versie waar Adam zowel jazz als licht klassieke invloeden in weefde. Damian gaf aan dat het volgende nummer het laatste zou zijn, waar men met “Noooo!!” op reageerde. Na ‘The sun will dance in it’s twilight’ volgde een uitgebreide, staande ovatie.

Feel like going home
Natuurlijk keerden de mannen terug voor een toegift, ze begonnen met grappen en plagerijtjes naar elkaar. Vlak voordat ze de eerste noten speelden werden de mannen serieus. Het publiek was direct stil, zodoende kwamen de eerste woorden van ‘Soldier’ prachtig uit. Het was bijna niet te geloven hoe mooi Damian zong, subliem begeleid door Adam. Non-stop volgde ‘Feel like going home’. De akoestiek was erg goed, zang en muziek kwamen perfect uit. Het summiere licht paste bij de setting.
Na afloop hadden Damian en Adam alle tijd om te praten met de bezoekers. Deze waren duidelijk onder de indruk van dit concert. Het onvoorstelbaar hoge niveau van ‘Wilson & Wakeman is nauwelijks te bevatten. Met een gevoel van verwondering en ontzag keerde men huiswaarts.

In Seek for adventure, Adam and Damian sang together. The colour of their voice varies enormously, yet this difference forms a fantastic blend. The audience was very quiet, this gave the concert an added value. Because Adam and Damian occasionally told something in a humorous way, they laughed in between the songs. Adam and Damian radiated warmth, and gave you the feeling that they were your friends. This had the cozy, intimate atmosphere of a living room concert. Damian told an anecdote about the fact that during another concert there was free tea for everyone, which he called a tea routine. Afterwards the men teased each other, there was plenty of laughter. The atmosphere changed immediately when Adam played the first notes in his solo performance. This was Bob Dylan’s ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right‘. The audience was immediately silent, and it stayed that way. People were deeply impressed by so much emotion in song and music, Adam also knew how to touch everyone.

Every now and then Damian picked up the microphone from the standard and walked off the stage. He stood right in front of the front pews to sing. With his unimaginable, high range Damian sang a completely different version than David. One moment he sang from the top of his chest, the next moment he sang small. He knew how to dose everything perfectly. This was beautifully complemented by Adam’s sparkling piano playing.

Adam doesn’t only know how to handle the piano very well, he’s also a good guitarist. He showed that in ‘Catch you when you fall‘. All solo he sang and played small and subdued, with which he managed to hit a sensitive chord again.
Damian told about the tour he will be doing in the autumn to celebrate his 50th birthday. He mentioned the date and location of the only concert that will take place in the Netherlands.
