Na het uitkomen van Mike Visaggio ’s soloalbum ‘Starship Universe’ (2006) werd hij uitgenodigd voor het Pop Montreal festival. Daarom richtte deze toetsenist de (neo symfonische) prog rockband Kinetic Element op. Deze Amerikaanse band heeft zich onder andere laten beïnvloeden door Emerson Lake & Palmer, Yes en Asia.
Kinetic Element stond op diverse prog festivals zoals ROSfest en Progtoberfest. Het vorige album, ‘Travelog’ (2015), kreeg goede recensies. ‘The Face Of Life’ is de titel van hun nieuwste album. De songteksten zijn niet eenvoudig te doorgronden. De kern is: met een spirituele kijk/visie, kun je de chaos van het leven aan. Mike heeft een Christelijke achtergrond, toch is dit album niet Christelijk bedoeld. Hij vindt dat het Christendom geen religie is, maar een soort gemoedstoestand.
De gesproken woorden aan het begin van ‘Epistle’ maken me nieuwsgierig naar wat er komen gaat. Saint John Coleman zingt een flinke lap tekst, er zitten wat religieuze aanwijzingen in. Deze openingstrack is geïnspireerd op de brieven die apostel Paulus schreef. Mike gaf er zijn eigen draai aan, en schreef een brief aan iedereen. In het kort komt het hierop neer: Als iedereen elkaar zou behandelen behandel zoals je zelf behandeld wilt worden, zou het leven een stuk aangenamer zijn. Saint John heeft een eigen stemgeluid, zijn duidelijke uitspraak bevat vrij harde klanken. Als hij zachter zingt, worden de klanken wat zachter van kleur. De woorden passen goed op de muziek. Het gitaarspel van Peter Matuchniak is heerlijk! Er zijn niet alleen volop details van de toetsen te horen, maar ook van de drums/cimbalen. De tekst is dan misschien wat lastiger om geheel te begrijpen, de muziek is toegankelijk gehouden.
‘All Open Eyes’ heeft een verrassend a capella intro. Dit wordt afgewisseld met de toetsten, vervolgens komt de rest van de muziek erbij. Mike laat zijn toetsen zijn veelvuldig horen, maar het is niet overdadig. Toch hoor je orgel, piano en synthesizers. Dit nummer heeft veel wendingen, sommige hiervan zijn fantastisch! Er wordt gevarieerd in tempo en volume. Bovendien zijn er behoorlijk wat details in de muziek, en worden er diverse instrumenten naar de voorgrond geduwd. Dit opbouw van deze epic is gaaf.
‘The Face Of Life’ heeft een klein gespeelde start, met lang aanhoudende, zacht rinkelende details. Vrij vertaald gaat de tekst over het doorstaan van de stormen die je in je leven mee maakt, en je staande zien te houden. Een aantal woorden worden wat langer aangehouden om de op de muziek te laten passen. Een enkele keer voelt dat als een lichte disbalans. Na een prachtige wending wordt het woord “Freedom” met passie en vol overtuiging gezongen. Even later worden de stemmen prima gestapeld. Ook blijven de wendingen komen. Er zijn enkele minikraakjes, ze zijn zo zacht dat ze nauwelijks hoorbaar zijn. Weer valt het gitaarspel positief op. Dat geldt ook voor het orgelspel. Ondertussen hoor je de bas wel degelijk. Bas en drum zijn veel meer dan ‘alleen maar’ ritmesectie.
Mooie details zorgen voor een uitgebreide aanloop naar het einde. Na deze mooie epic volgen twee kortere nummers. De eerste, ‘Last Words’ is vrij ingetogen. De bonustrack is ‘Lost Words’. De meerdere vocalen geven zorgen voor een positieve vibe.
Een enkeling zal misschien afhaken of moeten wennen aan de stem van Saint John, maar voor de liefhebbers is het fijn een karakteristieke stem te horen.
Zoals eerder aangegeven zijn de teksten niet alledaags. De muziek is toegankelijk, toch hebben de nummers een prima structuur.

This opening track is inspired by the letters that Apostle Paul wrote. Mike gave it his own twist, and wrote a letter to everyone. In short, it comes down to this: If everyone treated each other the way you want to be treated, life would be a lot more pleasant. Saint John has his own voice, his clear pronunciation contains quite loud sounds. When he sings softer, the sounds become softer in colour. The words fit well with the music. Peter Matuchniak’s guitar playing is wonderful! There are not only plenty of details of the keys to hear, but also of the drums / cymbals. The text may be a bit more difficult to understand, the music is kept accessible.
All Open Eyes‘ has a surprising a capella intro. This is alternated with the keys, then the rest of the music is added. Mike lets his keys are heard frequently, but it is not excessive. Yet you hear organ, piano and synthesizers. This song has many twists, some of them are fantastic! There is variation in tempo and volume. Moreover, there are quite a few details in the music, and various instruments are pushed to the foreground. This construction of this epic is cool.
The Face Of Life‘ has a small start, with long lasting, soft tinkling details. Freely translated, the text is about surviving the storms you experience in your life, and keeping you going. A few words are kept longer to fit the music. Occasionally this feels like a slight imbalance. After a beautiful turn the word “Freedom” is sung with passion and conviction. A little later the voices are stacked perfectly. Also the twists and turns keep coming. There are some mini-squares, they are so soft that they are hardly audible. Again the guitar playing stands out positively. The same goes for organ playing. Meanwhile you can hear the bass. Bass and drum are much more than ‘just’ rhythm section.
Beautiful details provide an extensive run-up to the end. This beautiful epic is followed by two shorter songs. The first, ‘Last Words‘ is quite subdued. The bonus track is ‘Lost Words‘. The multiple vocals give a positive vibe.
A few may have to give up or get used to the voice of Saint John, but for the fans it is nice to hear a characteristic voice.
As mentioned before, the lyrics are not everyday. The music is accessible, yet the songs have an excellent structure.
