De Engelse prog rockband Mostly Autumn heeft in de bijna 25 jaar van hun bestaan al heel wat mooie albums uitgebracht. Hun nieuwste album, ‘White Rainbow’, zou wel eens het meest speciale kunnen zijn. Dit album is opgedragen Liam Davison, hij was medeoprichter van Mostly Autumn. In 2014 verliet hij de band. In november 2017 overleed Liam, totaal onverwacht en veel te jong. Een eerbetoon aan Liam is dan ook zeker op zijn plaats.

‘Procession’ start met het zachte geluid van stromend water. Het aantal instrumenten wordt langzaam uitgebouwd. Door de percussie en het fluitspel krijgt dit korte instrumentale nummer een vleugje folk.

Aan de mysterieuze muziek van ‘Viking Funeral’ worden bijpassende geluiden toegevoegd, dit geeft een dromerige sfeer. Weer vallen de diverse blaasinstrumenten positief op. De zang zit vrij ver op de achtergrond, maar dat past binnen het geheel. In een rockend stuk lijken ritme en melodie even tegen elkaar in te gaan, maar de balans blijft bestaan. Na een gave wending hoor je akoestisch gitaar, en het krakend geluid van een houten zeilboot. Een stem gebruikt als instrument, lijkt geheel uit de verte te komen. Er zijn diverse veranderingen in tempo en volume, en in het aantal laagjes. Natuurlijk de is samenzang van Olivia en Bryan prachtig, ook de individuele stemmen zijn mooi. Dit tweede nummer sterft langzaam weg.

Weer het kabbelende water, de ingetogen en meeslepende muziek in ‘Burn’ kruipt onder mijn huid. In een langzaam tempo worden enkele noten gespeeld, het is emotioneel. Less is more, dat is hier zeker van toepassing. Als Olivia Sparnenn-Josh zingt, zijn tempo en volume iets toegenomen. Even later is er nogmaals een lichte toename. In het volgende minimalistische stuk is Olivia’s stem kristalhelder, het raakt me keer op keer. De verdeling van de muziek in de koptelefoon is subtiel, maar subliem.

Zo volgen de mooie nummers elkaar op. Het ene nummer is kalmer, het andere wat meer rockend, of beide zitten (als tegenstelling) verweven in één nummer. In bijvoorbeeld ‘Up’ klinken Bryan’s zang en de muziek zowel emotioneel als ‘vrolijk’.

‘The Undertow’ begint klein, met diverse laagjes gitaar. De zang komt vast van Chris Johnson. Hij heeft een ongekende heldere stem, zeker voor een man. De eerste zinnen vallen op zich nog mee qua hoogte, maar de woorden ‘Let it go’ zijn onvoorstelbaar hoog en teder. Daarna gaat de muziek van licht poppy naar licht rockend; en weer terug. De veranderingen blijven komen, ook dit is een gaaf nummer.

Het eerste stuk van ‘White Rainbow’ is rustig. Er volgt een overgang naar mid tempo. Als het volume toeneemt, zijn de toetsen aangenaam aanwezig. Het gitaarspel (in laagjes) is om je vingers bij af te likken. Even lijkt dit nummer te gaan eindigen, maar het is een gave verandering naar een prachtig minimalistisch stuk. Er komt wat drama bij, compleet met regen en onweer. Met een beetje koorzang wordt de rock opgebouwd. Dit is een geweldige epic, waarin de Mostly Autumn sound duidelijk te horen is. Na een uptempo stuk wordt de sfeer vriendelijk. De woorden die Olivia en Bryan zingen zijn vast voor Autumn, hun dochter. De opbouw naar het einde is mooi.

Alle nummers hebben een boeiende structuur. De verdeling tussen de instrumenten onderling is prima in balans, de muziek bevat talloze details. De zang van Olivia en Bryan is weer dik in orde. De geluidskwaliteit is zoals we gewend zijn prima. Liam zou trots geweest zijn, want Mostly Autumn heeft met ‘White Rainbow’ een zeer goed album op de markt gezet.

Mostly Autumn – White Rainbow

After a cool turn you hear acoustic guitar, and the crackling sound of a wooden sailing boat. A voice used as an instrument, seems to come entirely from a distance. There are several changes in tempo and volume, and in the number of layers. Of course the singing together of Olivia and Bryan is beautiful, also the individual voices are beautiful. This second song slowly dies away.

In the next minimalist piece Olivia’s voice is crystal clear, it touches me again and again. The distribution of music in the headphones is subtle, but sublime.

So the beautiful songs follow each other. One song is calmer, the other more rocking, or both are (as an opposite) interwoven in one song. For example, in ‘Up‘ Bryan’s vocals and the music sound both emotional and ‘cheerful’.

The Undertow‘ starts small, with several layers of guitar. The vocals come from Chris Johnson. He has an unprecedented clear voice, especially for a man. The first sentences are not that high, but the words ‘Let it go’ are incredibly high and tender. After that the music goes from light poppy to light rocking; and back again. The changes keep coming, this is a cool song too.

The first part of ‘White Rainbow‘ is quiet. There follows a transition to mid tempo. When the volume increases, the keys are pleasantly present. The guitar playing (in layers) is to lick your fingers. For a moment this song seems to end, but it is a cool change to a beautiful minimalist piece. There is some drama, complete with rain and thunder. With a little choral singing the rock is built up. This is a great epic, in which the Mostly Autumn sound is clearly audible. After an uptempo piece the atmosphere becomes friendly. The words that Olivia and Bryan sing are probably for Autumn, their daughter. The build up to the end is beautiful.

All songs have a fascinating structure. The distribution between the instruments is well balanced, the music contains numerous details. The vocals of Olivia and Bryan are fine again. The sound quality is fine as we are used to. Liam would have been proud, because Mostly Autumn has released a very good album with ‘White Rainbow‘.
