John Corabi is een grootheid in de rock en metal wereld. Hij was zanger bij onder andere Mötley Crüe en Union. Momenteel is hij frontman van The Dead Daisies. Daarmee stond hij in november 2018 in De Bosuil, Weert. Daarnaast treedt hij ook solo op. Op deze winterse dag van 30 januari, stond deze energiebom hier weer. Ditmaal solo en, akoestisch. Om dit concert een gezellige sfeer te geven was het podium afgesloten met een gordijn. Daarvoor stond een klein podium opgesteld, compleet met vloerkleed en kaarsjes. Onder luid applaus nam John plaats op de stoel. Tijdens het stemmen van zijn gitaar maakte hij al grappen. Toen het stemmen klaar was zei hij: ”Thank you and goodnight”.

UNION
Het eerste nummer wat hij zong was ‘Love’ (I don’t need it anymore). Zijn licht schorre stem en zijn vocale uithalen bevatten een behoorlijke dosis power, dit kwam akoestisch extra goed tot zijn recht.
Enkele fans zongen dit Union nummer zachtjes mee. Hierna vertelde John dat hij geen setlist gebruikte, maar gewoon zou spelen wat hem te binnen schoot. Hij gaf toe dat hij zichzelf graag hoorde praten. Dat deed hij veelvuldig tussen de nummers, meestal met een grappige anekdote, zodat er nogal wat te lachen viel.
Maar er was ook een serieus verhaal over een gek die uit het niets begon te schieten, hierbij kwamen een paar vrienden om het leven. Hij bracht een ode aan die vrienden door ‘If I never get to say goodbye’ op een indrukwekkende, emotionele manier te zingen. Tijdens, maar vooral na een klein gespeeld stukje was de emotie zelfs voelbaar.

THE SCREAM
Na een humoristisch verhaal waarmee volop gelachen werd, schakelde hij moeiteloos over naar een nummer van ‘The Scream’. Het publiek luisterde ademloos naar deze mooie, ingetogen versie van ‘Father, Mother, Son’.

John zocht tijdens zijn monologen contact met de fans, op zijn eigen ongedwongen manier. Met zijn gelaatsmimiek en bewegende handen gaf hij zijn verhalen een meerwaarde. Een aantal anekdotes hadden een ‘ondeugend’ en/of dubbelzinnig tintje. Soms begon hij serieus, maar aan de blik in zijn ogen wist je dat er wat grappigs kwam. Bijvoorbeeld: Als vader vond John dat het bij het opvoeden van zijn zoon hoorde om over drugs te praten. Met een pretlichtjes in de ogen vervolgde hij: “Ik vertelde hem wat hij wel mocht kopen en waar hij van af moest blijven.”
Hij sprak duidelijk en wist op een boeiende manier te vertellen. Hij gebruikte regelmatig grappige stemmetjes om het verhaal extra duidelijk te maken. Toen verhaal nummer zoveel al ruim negen minuten duurde nam deze rocker zichzelf op de hak met de woorden: “Het nummer wat ik straks ga spelen… straks.. een keertje …”. THE DEAD DAISIES
Als frontman van The Dead Daisies speelde hij natuurlijk ook een aantal’ Daisies’ nummers. Hierbij blikte hij nog even terug op het concert wat hij met ‘The Daisies’ gaf, hier in De Bosuil. Voordat hij aan ‘Dead and Gone’ begon vroeg hij om “Yeh, yeh” mee te zingen. Daar werd vanzelfsprekend gehoor aan gegeven. Van ‘zijn Daisies’ speelde hij ook nog ‘(If I could only) Sleep’.

Mötley Crüe
Na een iets te lange monoloog herkenden vele het wijsje. De eerste woorden van het Mötley Crüe nummer ‘Misunderstood’ kwamen binnen. Heel het nummer was vol emotie gezongen, maar de laatste zinnen

“Daddy’s comin’ home tonight , So don’t you cry”

raakten echt een gevoelige snaar. Over snaren gesproken: niet alles was constant perfect gespeeld.
Hij vroeg om een ‘sing a long’ voor ‘Hooligan’s holiday’. Natuurlijk deed men mee. “You can do better!” riep John, waarop ‘Hooligan’s holiday’ luider werd gezongen.

Het waren niet alleen maar hardrock nummer die voorbijkwamen. John speelde ook ‘Lady Stardust’ van David Bowie. Dit werd natuurlijk een John Corabi versie, maar wel een mooie.
Voor aanvang van een nummer vroeg John “Are you ready??”. Als hij verbaast de zaal rondkeek, werd er nog een keer “Yeahhh” geroepen, maar dan harder. Zo wist hij ook zittend, zijn fans te bespelen.
Er was volop interactie met de fans, de grapjes die vanuit de zaal kwamen, werden ook door John gewaardeerd.
De rook gaf ‘Man in the moon’ net dat beetje meer. Het licht in De Bosuil wisselde subtiel, passend bij een set als deze.
Dit was het laatste nummer, en John liep weg.

Dilana Smith
In no time zat John weer op de stoel. Dilana Smith (The Voice) staat wel vaker met John op het podium, zo ook op deze avond. Samen zongen ze enkele nummers. Als laatste zong dit tweetal ‘She talks to angels’ (van The Black Crowes). John zong al eerste, je kon een speld horen vallen. Snel nam Dilana het over. Met haar power volle, rauwe stem wist ze dit weer prachtig emotioneel te vertolken. Dit was een mooi afscheidscadeautje. Eén man, één akoestische gitaar: Met zijn humor en charisma wist deze man het publiek, op eigenzinnige wijze, ruim tweeëneenhalf uur lang te boeien. Daarna hadden fans de gelegenheid om samen met John op de foto te gaan. Zo werd deze avond nog specialer.
