Residuos Mentales – Introspection

On The Borderline’ start met redelijk snel en licht pianospel.
De veranderingen in ‘A Promise Unkept / Mental Residuals’ vloeien in elkaar over.

Residuos Mentales – Introspection

The name of founder Alexandros Mantas reveals that the band Residuos Mentales comes from Greece.
Their inspiration is their 70s prog, they mix electronic and a touch of Greek music through it. Their instrumental CD ‘Introspection‘ was released on 14 Dec. last.

Long lasting tones and various sounds give ‘Pandora’s Box‘ a spherical start. This continues when piano playing and orchestral elements are added. This opening track remains mysterious. You hear mini squats, after which the non stop continues with ‘Alienated‘. This starts with rain, thunder and quite fast piano playing. The sombre cello sounds together with the lighter piano playing. Even without headphones you can hear the crackles well during the transition to ‘Immersed‘. The piano remains present. Strings and strings come around the corner, the layers are nicely divided in this lovely song. I expected a build up to more, but this is also a short song. Several layers of music including guitar and flute give ‘The Thorn In Me‘ dreamy folk sound. High piano sounds whirl through lower tones. The atmosphere remains quiet, it is lovely lounge music, whose tempo has become a little bit faster. This longer song immediately feels better.
In ‘My Stories‘ there is well played with the division in the headphones. The added sounds take a lot of attention away from the music.
The sound of the keys and acoustic guitar in ‘(A Prospect Of) A Blooming Life‘ is warm. The cello can be heard quite far in the background. This song is rippling on, the turn I was hoping for will not come.
The songs follow almost non stop. Because the sound quality is not perfect, the music doesn’t stand out as well. Otherwise ‘Home’ would have crawled under my skin. The same goes for the ‘Floydisch’ guitar playing of ‘It all becomes clear‘. Spread over the song there are all kinds of sounds added, which are a bit annoying with headphones. A few strokes on the drum gives the feeling that we can expect a lot more. The tension is built up, but the song keeps bumping: we don’t get a cool turn.
The intro of ‘Narrative‘ is very promising. The acoustic guitar gives a touch of folk, this forms a beautiful blend with the violin playing. Sometimes one is one, sometimes the other instrument is more in the foreground. The low bass tones give a good twist, keys and strings can also be heard. By a tight piece of percussion you would expect a build-up to a change, but the end that is stuck to it does not fit nicely.
On The Borderline‘ starts with fairly fast and light piano playing. The structure is, partly due to the orchestral influences interesting. Here the sound is quite clear, if only everywhere! For a moment ’timpani’ sound, and with laughter this song ends.
The changes in ‘A Promise Unkept / Mental Residuals‘ merge into each other. No rustling sounds have been added, the music comes out better. The xylophone sounds are clear, the piano is briefly solo. A little later there is a turn to a cool and mysterious piece. After a few piano sounds this CD is over.
The foundation of the songs is in order. The structure could have been more refined in a number of areas, think of details, such as resting. Also the twists could have been more interesting. Not all songs feel ‘finished’, the tail is missing here and there.
Without headphones it is less noticeable that the sound is not equally good everywhere. The harmony between the instruments is good. The Greek roots of ‘Residuos Mentales‘ are nicely interwoven in the whole. Introspection‘ has become a very nice album.
