‘Little Geneva’ is een bluesband uit Bristol, en werd opgericht op oudjaarsavond 2018. Al snel kwam hun EP ‘Live at the Factory’ uit. Nu al is er een full cd uit. Op ‘Eel Pie’ staan negen covers. Het doel van deze snelle releases is om de aandacht op zich te vestigen. Zodat Little Geneva veel door Europa kan touren. Deze vijf bandleden speelden al in diverse bands, en zijn daarom geen onbekenden in de blues scene.
Het vintage geluid in ‘Early In The Morning’ valt direct op, maar dat is hier niet hinderlijk. De zang van Rags Russell sluit aan bij de rustig bespeelde toetsen. Dit nummer is mooi klein gespeeld. En blijft daarmee dicht in de buurt van de originele versie.
Zak Ranyard op bas, en Simon Small op drums geven ‘Born In Chicago’ meer tempo en ‘swung’ dan het origineel van Nick (Nicholas) Gravenites. Het geluid blijft vintage, dit past op zich wel bij de oude stijl van de muziek. Maar het is op de grens van wel of niet hinderlijk. Tijdens een prima instrumentaal stuk speelt Rags een mooi stuk weg op de blues harp. Maar laten we het prima gitaarspel van Chris en Dave Doherty niet vergeten. Ook dit nummer eindigt in een fade out.
Het vintage gehalte van het geluid in ‘Give Me Back My Wig’ is veel te hoog. Met koptelefoon klinkt het verre van aangenaam. Zonde, want het uptempo stuk swingt lekker. Het goede gitaarspel komt onvoldoende tot zijn recht. De muziek vraagt om harder gezet te worden. Maar dat laat het geluidskwaliteit niet toe, ook niet via de speakers.
‘Just To Be With You’ is grotendeels gespeeld en gezongen in mid tempo, en luistert aangenaam weg. Even wordt er steeds een beetje zachter gespeeld. Als dit iets langer had aangehouden, had dit meer impact gehad, het tempo gaat namelijk vrij snel weer omhoog.
‘Walkin‘ start met gelach. Het ritme is heerlijk opzwepend. Live gespeeld zal dit korte, eenvoudige opgezette nummer voor een prima sfeer zorgen.
Door het langzame tempo ademt ‘Ain’t Nobody’s Business’ de sfeer uit van ergens diep in de vorige eeuw. Dit is geschreven door Jimmy (James) Witherspoon en stamt inderdaad uit midden vorige eeuw. ‘Little Geneva’ speelt en zingt dit nummer klein en gevoelig. Het geluid is hier best redelijk, maar als dit echt goed was geweest, had dit nummer mij zeker geraakt! De cd lijkt afgelopen te zijn, het is immers stil. Maar de cijfers op de display lopen nog ongeveer een minuut door. Dan komt er onverwacht nog muziek. Niet echt een hidden track, want de display staat nog op nummer 9. En het duurt maar ongeveer één minuut, dat is beetje kort voor een track. Ach ik zie het maar als een extraatje.
Door het retro geluid ademt ‘Eel Pie’ de sfeer uit van een oude, grijsgedraaide lp die afgespeeld wordt op een hele oude platenspeler. De nummers komen hierdoor niet goed tot hun recht. Jammer want de old school blues nummers verdienen de geluidskwaliteit die aansluit bij het heden. Daarom zal mijn beoordeling vrij laag uitvallen.
Veel nummers eindigen in een fade out, live gespeeld maken ze daar natuurlijk wat anders van. Want deze mannen kunnen zeker goed spelen en performen. Veel blues liefhebbers zullen dat kunnen beamen, omdat ze de meeste bandleden al live gezien hebben. ‘Little Geneva’ is zeker een band om live te zien.

The sound remains vintage, this in itself fits the old style of the music. But it is on the border of whether or not it is annoying. During an excellent instrumental piece Rags plays a nice piece on the blues harp. But let’s not forget the excellent guitar playing of Chris and Dave Doherty. This song also ends in a fade out.
The vintage quality of the sound in ‘Give Me Back My Wig‘ is far too much. With headphones it sounds far from pleasant. It’s a shame, because the up-tempo piece swings nicely. The good guitar playing doesn’t sound proper. The music asks to be turned up. But that does not allow the sound quality, not even through the speakers.
Just To Be With You‘ is largely played and sung in mid-tempo, and listens pleasantly away. For a while they play a bit softer. If this would have lasted a bit longer, it would have had more impact, because the tempo goes up quite quickly.
Walkin‘ starts with laughter. The rhythm is wonderfully exciting. Played live, this short, simple song will create a great atmosphere.
Because of the slow tempo ‘Ain’t Nobody’s Business‘ exudes the atmosphere of somewhere deep in the last century. This was written by Jimmy (James) Witherspoon and indeed dates from the middle of the last century. ‘Little Geneva‘ plays and sings this song small and sensitive. The sound here is quite reasonable, but if this had been really good, this song would certainly have touched me! The CD seems to be at an end, it’s all quiet. But the numbers on the display are still running for about a minute. Then, unexpectedly, there is music. Not really a hidden track, because the display is still at number 9. And it only takes about one minute, which is a bit short for a track. Well I see it as a bonus.
Because of the retro sound ‘Eel Pie‘ exudes the atmosphere of an old, ‘worn’ album that is played on a very old turntable. The songs don’t come into their own because of this. Too bad because the old school blues songs deserve the quality of sound that matches the present. That’s why my rating will be pretty low.
Many songs end in a fade out. Of course, they’ll end a bit different when they play live. Because these guys can certainly play and perform well. Many blues lovers will be able to confirm that, because they have seen most of the band members live already. Little Geneva‘ is definitely a band to see live.
