Stew komt uit Zweden. Dit drietal vormt pas een jaar of twee een band. Ze hebben zich laten inspireren door eind jaren ’60, en de jaren ’70. Vorig jaar kwam hun EP ‘Hot’ uit. En nu hebben ze ‘People’, een volledig album uitgebracht.
‘Intro’ is vrij zacht en een beetje merkwaardig, het maakt heel me nieuwsgierig naar wat er komen gaat.
De eerste indruk van ‘Right On Time’ is lekker ruig, ook qua zang. Znger/bassist Markus Åsland heeft een heerlijke ruwe, bijna rauwe stem. De inspiratie komt duidelijk van decennia terug, van voor mijn tijd. Maar dat is voor mij geen probleem, in tegendeel. Het ritme heeft een heerlijke flow, er zitten diverse wendingen in. Ook in het gitaarspel van Nicklas Jansson is er genoeg variatie.
Vooral in het ritme van de titeltrack zitten leuke, onverwachte details. Andere delen klinken wat eenvoudiger, hier tap je al snel mee met je voet. Nicklas Dahlgren laat zijn drumstokken even met rust, verrassend, maar goed gekozen. ‘People’ is een prima track, maar ze springt er niet bovenuit in vergelijking met de voorgaande tracks.
‘Newborn’ heeft in het begin een aangenaam lazy ritme, dit verandert naar licht pittig. Tempo en volume wisselen een aantal keer. Maar het maakt allemaal net te weinig indruk.
Het klein gespeelde deel van ‘Endless Journey’ is best mooi, maar het had nog wat kleiner gemogen om meer diepgang te creëren. Het volumeverschil van de schorre zang en het klein gezongen stukjes is te klein.
Dit soort contrasten zijn in meerdere nummers niet groot genoeg. De contrasten zijn belangrijk voor een betere luisterbeleving. Op de momenten dat de gitaar fel bespeeld is, zoals bijvoorbeeld in een stuk van ‘Play The Fool’, mag deze er meer doorheen ‘scheuren’. Dit nummer heeft wel leuke drum accenten.
Eigenijk zitten de meeste nummers best goed in elkaar. ‘Godless’ heeft een gaaf intro. De muziek is een tijdje laidback; de zang plus de achtergrondzang volgen ditzelfde pad. Na verloop van tijd krijgt dit nummer een opzwepend karakter. Net als je denkt dat ‘Afraid Of Getting Nowhere’ het hele nummer laidback blijft, gaan tempo en volume omhoog. Zang en muziek klinken nu ruiger.
Er zijn leuke rusten verwerkt in ‘Fruits’, zo heeft iedere track diverse leuke dingen.
‘Morning Again’ heeft een kleine start, op de achtergrond zijn er vogelgeluiden toegevoegd. De geluidskwaliteit van deze sampling is niet helder genoeg. Het gitaarspel is vrij eenvoudig, het geluid hiervan is niet sprankelend, maar sluit op zich wel aan bij de zang. Het gitaarspel gaat verder in deze langzame flow, de vogelgeluiden blijven Je hoort de vingers over de snaren gaan. Het gevoel bij deze rustige track is melancholiek, misschien zelfs wat somber.
De meeste van deze elf nummers duren zo’n 3 a 3,5 minuten, met een enkele ‘uitschieter’ naar bijna vijf minuten. Hier zijn dus geen mega lange nummers die er vooral in de ‘70’s ook wel waren. Het aparte openingsnummer had mijn nieuwsgierigheid gewekt. Dit heeft dit drietal niet geheel waar gemaakt. Alle nummers klinken best lekker maar, echte geweldige dingen ontbreken.
Het geluid is licht troebel, maar dat past bij het tijdsbeeld. Het is leuk dat bands zoals ‘Stew’ inspiratie vinden uit de muziek van 40 à 50 jaar geleden. Met deze inspiratiebron hebben ze met ‘People’ zeker een leuk debuutalbum gemaakt.

Stew is from Sweden. These threesomes have formed a band since about two years. They were inspired by the late 60s and 70s. Last year their EP ‘Hot’ was released. And now they have released ‘People‘, a full-length album.
‘Intro‘ is quite soft and a bit strange, it makes me very curious about what’s coming.
The first impression of ‘Right On Time‘ is nice and rough, also in terms of vocals. Singer/bassist Markus Åsland has a lovely rough, almost raw voice. The inspiration clearly comes from decades back, from before my time. But that’s no problem for me, not at all! The rhythm has a wonderful flow, there are several twists and turns. Also, in Nicklas Jansson’s guitar playing there is enough variation.
Especially in the rhythm of the title track there are nice, unexpected details. Other parts sound a bit simpler, so you can quickly tap your foot with it. Nicklas Dahlgren leaves his drumsticks unattended for a while, surprisingly, but well chosen. ‘People‘ is a fine track, but she doesn’t stand out compared to the previous tracks.
‘Newborn‘ has a pleasant lazy rhythm in the beginning, this changes to slightly spicy. Tempo and volume change a few times. But it all makes just too little impression.
The small part of ‘Endless Journey‘ is quite nice, but it could have been smaller to create more depth. The difference in volume of the hoarse singing and the small sung pieces is too small.
These kinds of contrasts are not big enough in several songs. The contrasts are important for a better listening experience. At the moments that the guitar has been fiercely played, as for example in a piece of ‘Play The Fool‘, it is allowed to ’tear through’ more. This song has nice drum accents.
Actually, most of the songs are quite well put together. ‘Godless‘ has a cool intro. The music is laidback for a while; the vocals plus the background vocals follow the same path. After a while this song gets an exciting character.
Just when you think that ‘Afraid Of Getting Nowhere‘ remains laidback the whole song, tempo and volume go up. Vocals and music sound rougher now.
There are nice rests incorporated in ‘Fruits‘, so every track has several nice things
‘Morning Again‘ has a small start, in the background bird sounds have been added. The sound quality of this sampling is not clear enough. The guitar playing is quite simple, the sound of this is not sparkling, but it matches the vocals. The guitar playing continues in this slow flow, the bird sounds remain. You can hear the fingers going over the strings. The feeling with this quiet track is melancholic, maybe even a bit gloomy.
Most of these eleven songs last about 3 to 3.5 minutes, with a single ‘peak’ to almost five minutes. So here are no mega long songs that especially in the ’70’s also were. The special opening song had aroused my curiosity. This threesome didn’t fulfill all the expectations.
All songs sound nice, but really amazing things are missing.
The sound is slightly cloudy, but that fits the time scene. It is nice that bands like ‘Stew‘ find inspiration from the music of 40 to 50 years ago. With this source of inspiration they certainly made a nice debut album with ‘People‘.
