Retrospective – Latent Avidity

‘Latent Avidity’ is hun vijfde album.

Retrospective speelt zoals eerder aangegeven, verschillende stijlen.

De muziek sterft langzaam weg, Dan is het even stil voordat ‘What Will Be Next’ van start gaat.

Retrospective – Latent Avidity

The prog band Retrospective is from Poland. They play a mix of soundscapes, exciting rhythms and sometimes ‘heavily played strings’. Latent Avidity‘ is their fifth album. The lyrics are about mankind’s fear of the world around him.

Time‘ is a short track with atmospheric music, the clock you hear is ticking faster and faster. The transition to ‘Still There‘ is not entirely smooth. Jakub Roszak has a pleasant voice, with a light accent in his pronunciation. Łukasz Marszałek plays nice bass grooves. Robert Kusik drums pleasantly basic, which gives Maciej Klimek a little later plenty of room to play wonderful guitar. Rhythm, melody and vocals form a good balance. Despite the light accent, Jakub sings quite convincingly. Sometimes there is a mixture of despair and anger in his voice. The build-up to the end is beautiful.

In ‘Loneliness‘ keyboardist Beata Łagoda sings, she too has a beautiful voice. The drum rhythm is exciting and not very fast, this gives a wonderful flow. This song has a tight ending.

Retrospective plays, as mentioned before, different styles. This can be heard in ‘The Seed Has Been Sown‘, sometimes the music is dreamy and light, at other times the music sounds heavier, and is faster. Singing and music are in line, but there are also several instrumental pieces.

Just like the previous song, ‘Programmed Fear‘ also has a slightly poppy structure. In rhythm and melody there are quite a few recurring elements. A twist prevents my attention from being lost. Yet I am not yet one with the music. That only happens just before the end. The music slowly dies away, then it’s quiet for a while before ‘What Will Be Next’ starts. This last song starts small. With the addition of the drums the volume increases a bit. Jakub sings about friendships that end and the loss of trust in someone else. Although he does have emotion in his voice, it’s better that more emotion can be heard in it. Then I would certainly be touched by the words he sings. The changes in tempo and volume always attract attention. The instrumental piece is very good. Then it’s ‘wait-and-see/hear’ if there is a build-up towards the end, or a twist. Fortunately, it’s a twist. There is a pleasant amount of bass to be heard, but also the electronic sound of the keys is heard. The drumming is fine, the flow is great… and suddenly you notice that this is the build-up to a cool end.

The sound quality is sometimes a bit dull. The atmospheric parts don’t sound clear enough, the heavier parts could have sounded more intense. Jakub has a pleasant, gentle voice. Every now and then I miss some accents in his vocals. By singing a little louder, or just a little softer. He also could have accentuated (a part of) a word more often. It’s about details, but this could have made you all ears as a listener. Now, the lyrics don’t really make you thinking. ‘Retrospective‘ absolutely doesn’t want to make an album that sounds depressing. That mission is successful, because the whole is still accessible.
