Epica – Design Your Universe Gold Edition

CD 1: Design Your Universe Gold Edition

Resign to Surrender – A New Age Dawns – pt IV’ gaat in eerste instantie in het verlengde van de klassieke openingstrack verder.

Daarom is ‘Kingdom of Heaven – A New Age Dawns – pt V’’ destijds aan haar opgedragen. De gesproken woorden “It’s not your time. You have to go back… back! Now!” nemen een prachtige positie in.

CD 2: The Acoustic Universe / Bonus CD:

Epica – Design Your Universe Gold Edition

If you’re not familiar with metal, you might want to lump all metal styles together. Due to the performance of Floor Jansen (Nightwish) in the (Dutch) musical tv show ‘Best singers’, people started to look at metal differently. This group will probably also be impressed by the voice of Simone Simons. She is the front woman of Epica. This symphonic metal band exists about 17 years. The big breakthrough came with the album ‘Design Your Universe‘. The tenth anniversary of this beloved album is celebrated with the ‘Gold Edition‘, on the bonus CD are five acoustic songs. Hopefully people who (partially) ignore metal will now learn to appreciate Epica.

CD 1: Design Your Universe Gold Edition

Samadhi – prelude‘ has cinematic allure. The ‘string instruments’ and the staccato ‘choral singing’ sound fantastic.

Resign to Surrender – A New Age Dawns – pt IV‘ initially continues in line with the classical opening track. But then the metal comes up, the symphony remains. Grunted sentences are alternated with (sometimes theatrical) choral singing. Then we hear the high power voice of Simone. Metal and classical go hand in hand or follow each other at high speed. Different styles and volumes alternate. Despite these contradictions, everything remains in harmony.

Vocal and instrumental everything is of a high calibre, the sound is excellent. As a result, the numerous layers in vocals and music are very well expressed. The twists and turns in the music are innumerable. The contrasts between the heavily played strings and the light classical elements are phenomenal, the rhythm section provides a fantastic body. You can almost imagine yourself in a big theatre where this is performed live. In every track so much is fired at you! In ‘Martyr of the Free Word‘, for example, you not only hear Simone’s clear vocals, but also choral singing. A few sentences have similarities with Gregorian singing. In between all this you can hear very good grunts. And then I haven’t even mentioned the instrumental delicacy!

The grandmother of Mark Jansen passed away when this album was recorded. ‘That’s why ‘Kingdom of Heaven – A New Age Dawns – pt V‘ was dedicated to her at the time. The start of this special song has a spherical effect because of the soundscapes and the light music. The change to the metal is very nice, again the balance between metal and the symphonic elements is super. There is constantly an unpredictable and unimaginable interaction between these two. The grunts are, like many other vocals, sometimes in multiple layers. The small parts played are beautifully welded in. The spoken words “It’s not your time. You have to go back… back! Now!” take up a gorgeous position. The rest of this epic is great as well. Maybe this is the very, very best Epica-track ever.

Still, the tracks that follow are not disappointing at all! The first CD is a concatenation of fantastic moments. Even the bonus track is fantastic. Here are some more grunts, also this is of a high standard. The melody and symphonic elements remain beautifully interwoven with the metal.
I sometimes complain about the lack of contrast between high/low, hard/soft, light and heavy. There is nothing to complain about here, this is one of the most dynamic albums ever. This re-release is certainly better than the original, they hit the ball out of the park!

CD 2: The Acoustic Universe / Bonus CD:

Already during the first seconds of ‘Burn To A Cinder‘ there is the ‘wow-moment’. In terms of intensity it’s quite a difference. There are also some sweet/folk elements here because you can hear flute playing and background vocals. Slowly the atmosphere becomes even more cheerful. And then suddenly, after a musical rest, there is an extremely small part sung and played, the string instruments sound incredibly good. The guitar playing is sparkling, and the cheerful, but relaxed atmosphere is back.

After a wonderful instrumental intro to ‘Our Destiny‘, you can hear the crystal-clear vocals of Simone. The number of layers in the music varies, Simone’s vocals are constantly changing as well. This acoustic version is so different than expected.
That remains so in the songs that follow. There are many more details in vocals and music than you usually hear in acoustic versions. So even here you have a lot to listen to. Although of course it is quieter than on CD 1

Finally, in ‘Design Your Universe‘, the metal side of Epica comes to life. Grunts in an acoustic, classically oriented version, that’s special! It’s even brave, but amazing! The grunting returns a few times, this calls to ‘roar-along’ Even after almost 75 minutes of running time, the ‘Gold Edition’ has ended too quickly.

Re-releases are not always an improvement, but Epica proves the opposite. ‘Design Your Universe‘ was already good, but all songs on this Gold Edition have been given an extra dimension. This is one of the best albums of the year.
