Deze band omschrijft zichzelf als sexy stoner rock’n roll trio uit Utrecht. ‘Let’s Blow This Popsicle Stand’ is de eerste full cd die van deze band. Dit album, wat op 20 maart uitkwam, bevat positieve vibes en een hoge dosis energie.
De eerste paar seconden zijn van ‘Gone’ zijn vrij rustig, maar het tempo gaat snel omhoog. Er zijn een paar kleine tempowisselingen, maar over het algemeen blijft het tempo redelijk hoog. Ondanks de leuke details is het redelijk voorspelbaar, maar energiek is het wel. Het geluid is vrij groezelig, op zich past dat bij de muziek.
‘That’s not what I want’ bevat een flink portie energie, de zang klinkt vervormd. De balans tussen gitaar en basis goed, deze laatste is meer dan alleen maar een ‘ritme-instrument’. Er zijn enkele verrassende stukjes, maar deze worden deels tenietgedaan door de herhalingen die erin zitten. Hierdoor is het een beetje veel van hetzelfde. De opbouw had verrassender mogen zijn, maar het einde is wel verrassend!
Ook ‘Slow down baby’ heeft leuke, kleine details, maar ook weer een aantal herhalingen. Omdat dit nummer wat vriendelijk is van karakter, is de groezelige sound een beetje overheersend.
De groezelige sound is soms vrij dik aangezet, waardoor het minder fijn is om het volume flink open te draaien. Het hoge tempo is opzwepend, al heeft de melodie er soms wel onder te lijden. Bovendien komen een aantal details in diverse nummers ongeveer op dezelfde manier terug.
‘Drunken sailor part 1’ heeft een leuke start. Deze is anders dan de voorgaande nummers. Het geluid van het tikken op de flessen is goed gevonden. Het drumwerk is lekker, en beslaat bijna een halve minuut. Dan komen de snaren erbij, even is er een wisseling van de wacht met de drums. Daarna ebt de verrassing weg. Na een paar tikjes op de flessen eindigt dit korte nummer vrij plotseling.
‘Into you’ en ‘All the way’ zijn pakkende nummers, ook deze bevatten leuke details, maar het zijn geen topnummers.
‘Handkerchiefs’ is het laatste nummer, dit sluit prima aan bij zijn voorgangers.
Bij elkaar duren deze 10 nummers nog geen 25 minuten, nogal kort voor een full cd. In een aantal nummers zit een vrij hoog aantal herhalingen. Daarbij komt dat het onderlinge verschil in de muziek aan de kleine kant is. Hierdoor ligt verveling op de loer. Er had dus wat meer geschaafd mogen worden. In de loop der tijd zullen de nummers misschien nog door ontwikkelen, daarvoor liggen er zeker nog mogelijkheden. Wellicht dat ‘Let’s Blow This Popsicle Stand’ iets te vroeg is uitgekomen. Aan de andere kant biedt dit album wel perspectieven om de aandacht op zich te vestigen. Live gespeeld zal Rhinorino zeker de energie over weten te brengen, want opzwepend, dat is dit album zeker!

That’s not what I want‘ contains a lot of energy, the vocals sound distorted. The balance between guitar and base is good, the latter is more than just a ‘rhythm instrument’. There are some surprising pieces, but these are partly offset by the repetitions in it. This makes it a bit much of the same. The structure should have been more surprising, but the end is surprising!
Also ‘Slow down baby‘ has nice, small details, but also some repetitions. Because this song has a bit of a friendly character, the grubby sound is a bit dominant.
The dingy sound is sometimes quite thick, which makes it less fun to turn up the volume. The high tempo is exciting, although the melody sometimes suffers from it. On top of that a number of details in various songs come back in about the same way.
Drunken sailor part 1‘ has a nice start. This is different from the previous songs. The sound of tapping the bottles is good. The drumming is nice, and takes almost half a minute. Then the strings are added, for a moment there is a change of the guard with the drums. Then the surprise ebbs away. After a few taps on the bottles this short number ends quite suddenly.
Into you‘ and ‘All the way‘ are catchy songs, these also contain nice details, but they are not top songs.
Handkerchiefs‘ is the last song, this fits perfectly with its predecessors.
Together these 10 songs take less than 25 minutes, rather short for a full CD. In a number of songs there is a fairly high number of repetitions. In addition, the mutual difference in the music is on the small side. Because of this boredom is lurking. So there should have been some more planing. In the course of time, the songs may still develop, there are certainly opportunities for that. Perhaps ‘Let’s Blow This Popsicle Stand‘ came out a bit too early. On the other hand, this album offers perspectives to draw attention to itself. Played live, Rhinorino will certainly be able to convey the energy, because that’s what this album is all about!
