De zanger en multi-instrumentalist Steve Bonino is science fiction liefhebber. Vandaar dat deze Amerikaan genoeg inspiratie had voor een trilogie. Het eerste album gaat over een jonge telescoopliefhebber, zijn bijnaam is Stargazer. Deze jongen groeide uit tot een belangrijke wetenschapper die werkt voor Hubble. Hij leeft in een dystopische wereld. Dit is denkbeeldige, akelige samenleving waar je nauwelijks kunt leven. Vanwege zijn expertise reist hij mee op een groot schip, The Phoenix. Met als doel het menselijk ras voort te zetten op Proxima b, gelegen in het Alpha Centauri zonnestelsel. Als dit eerste album eindigt zijn we 20 jaar verder. De kolonie is intact en vol hoop. Zijn markante stem is ook te horen op het prog-rock album ‘Gyreland’ van Bomber Goggles, wat eerder dit jaar uitkwam. Het eerste stuk van ‘The Grand Finale’ is een beetje dromerig. In het rockende vervolg gaat het tempo flink omhoog. Even is er een vleugje space te horen in de muziek.

Er wordt duidelijk gezongen, zodat het verhaal in ‘Under The Dome’ helder wordt. Bovendien is de verhaallijn geprint in het artwork. Licht klassieke en/of zoete elementen worden prima afgewisseld met rock, net als vocale en instrumentale delen. In de muziek zitten leuke details verwerkt.

De gesproken woorden in ‘The Dark Light Divide’ hebben een ‘space-sound’. Over het algemeen volgen de wendingen elkaar snel op, sommigen zijn onverwacht. Het heerlijke orgelspel wisselt Steve af met enkele pianoklanken. Ondertussen blijven snaren en drums (Jimmy Keegan) aanwezig en de wendingen blijven komen. Je hebt dus best veel om naar te luisteren. In een lekker lang instrumentaal stuk komen ook elektronische klanken aan bod.

Steve gebruikt hoofdzakelijk drum programming. Dit klinkt regelmatig te klinisch, toch zitten hier prima breaks in. Daarnaast zijn er gast drummers, waaronder Marco Minnemann. Dit klinkt natuurlijk subliem! In een aantal nummers is er gebruik gemaakt van gesproken sampling, dit ondersteunt en verduidelijkt het verhaal. Dit verhaal zal SF-liefhebbers zeker aanspreken. Ook voor wie geen SF-fan is, is er genoeg om van te genieten. Één van de dingen die steeds positief opvalt is het gitaarspel, al dan niet van de gastgitaristen.

Het instrumentale intro van ‘Fear’ trekt mijn volle aandacht. Na gesproken sampling worden stemmen heel even als instrument toegevoegd. De markante, hoge zang vormt een bijzonder contrast met de lage tonen in de muziek. Weer valt het mooie gitaarspel op. Dit laatste nummer eindigt met een fade out…wordt vervolgd in Stargazer 3.

De lichte ruis die er af en toe in zit, past wel bij het thema en bij de sampling. Niet alleen qua zang hoor je de connectie met het album ‘Gyreland’. Ook qua muziek zijn er raakvlakken. Soms zijn zang en muziek aan de zoete kant, toch is er voldoende toegankelijke rock aanwezig. Stargazer 2 is qua cover en inhoud duidelijk de opvolger van deel 1, toch zijn deze albums ook afzonderlijk te luisteren.

Stargazer 2 starts with light classical piano playing and other light classical elements. Then there is a ‘poppy’ twist. Steve alternates the wonderful organ playing with some piano sounds. Meanwhile strings and drums (Jimmy Keegan) remain present and the twists and turns keep coming. So you have quite a lot to listen to. In a nice long instrumental piece also electronic sounds are discussed.

Steve mainly uses drum programming. This often sounds too clinical, yet there are fine breaks in it. There are also guest drummers, including Marco Minnemann. This sounds sublime of course! In a number of songs spoken sampling is used, this supports and clarifies the story. This story will certainly appeal to SF-lovers. Even for those who are not SF fans, there is enough to enjoy. One of the things that always stands out positively is the guitar playing, whether or not of the guest guitarists.

The instrumental intro of ‘Fear‘ attracts my full attention. After spoken sampling, voices are added as an instrument for a moment. The striking, high-pitched vocals form a special contrast with the low tones in the music. Again the beautiful guitar playing stands out.
