In 1998 richtten gitarist Doug Aldrich en zanger Keith St. John de hardrockband Burning Rain op. Deze rock kanjers zijn gebleven. Na enkele bandwissels zit Blas Elias achter het drumstel. Bassist Brad Lang maakt de line-up compleet.
Met ‘Revolution’ opent dit album lekker rockend, dat is inclusief heerlijke ruwe rockstem van Keith. De opbouw is vrij eenvoudig maar opzwepend. Door het gillend gitaarwerk van Doug zet ik het volume wat hoger. Het is heerlijk om deze rock door het huis te laten rollen.
Bij aanvang van ‘Lorelei ‘wordt er leuk gespeeld met de verdeling over de koptelefoon. Met zijn ruwe stem weet Keith de vocale uithalen goed te halen. Het geheel nodigt uit om uit volle borst mee te ‘zingen’. Met ruim zes minuten is dit één van de langste nummers. Hoewel de opbouw, net als het eerste nummer, redelijk couplet- refrein is, is dit nummer boeiender om naar te luisteren. De snaren zijn super bespeeld, en op het einde is dit helemaal geweldig!
Het tempo ligt in ‘Nasty Hustle’ een stuk hoger. Het gaat wel wat ten koste van de verstaanbaarheid van de zang. Erg is dit niet, want dit is lekkere recht toe recht aan rock.
‘Shelter’ heeft een verrassend klein gespeelde start. De rauwe zang komt erg mooi uit. De meerdere stemmen vormen een goede blend met de laid back sfeer.
Het nummer blijft in balans. Even lijkt er een rockende wending te komen, deze ‘uithaal’ duurt amper een seconde, maar gaaf is het wel! Dit is een verrassende, toffe rockballad!
De titeltrack is een rocknummer dat aansluit bij de vorige pakkende nummers. Het is inderdaad fijn om de positieve vibe van muziek te ondergaan. Een portie muziek houd je (in moeilijke tijden) op de been, maakt je hoofd leeg, ontstresst, kortom muziek kan bevrijdend zijn. De opbouw naar het einde van ‘Face The Music’ is mooi.
De nummers die hierop volgen zijn ook ‘old- school’ rock. Er is regelmatig goed gespeeld met de verdeling van de muziek over de boxen.
Verrassende elektronische klanken bij het begin van ‘If It’s Love’. De toetsen die zijn verweven op de achtergrond zorgen voor een vleugje blues. De meerdere stemmen zijn wat zoet, toch prima toegevoegd. Dit nummer is vrij klein gespeeld en gezongen, het einde is weggedraaid.
In ‘Hideaway’ zijn de snaren iets zwaarder bespeeld, maar de melodie blijft behouden. Het zoet klinkende “Ahahaha” wordt een aantal keer herhaald, en brengt een vleugje pop in de rock. Dit wordt afgewisseld met de ruwe, soms langzame, rock zang. Het instrumentale stuk bevat leuke details. Het eindigt helaas met een vrije saaie fade out.
De drums zorgen er mede voor dat ‘Since I’m Loving You’ een gave start heeft. Daarna volgt er rock, zoals er in een aantal eerdere nummer ook te horen was.
Ook hier wordt het einde weggedraaid.
Een aantal van deze elf nummers hebben een redelijk voorspelbare opbouw. Jammer dat enkele nummers (een beetje fantasieloos) worden weggedraaid. Gelukkig zijn er zijn ook nummers die verrassend eindigen. Liefhebbers van dynamiek in het drummen zullen dit misschien missen, maar het strakke drumwerk van Blas is zeker niet storend. Samen met Brad op bas is de ritmesectie prima. Zang en gitaar trekken de meeste aandacht naar zich toe. Dit zijn de belangrijkste pijlers van dit heerlijke no-nonsense rockalbum

Burning Rain – Face the music

With ‘Revolution‘, this album opens with some great rocking, that includes Keith’s lovely rough rock voice. The structure is quite simple but exciting. Because of the screaming guitar skills of Doug I turn up the volume a bit. It’s great to let this rock roll through the house.
At the start of ‘Lorelei‘ there is a nice play with the distribution over the headphones. With his rough voice Keith knows how to get the vocals right. The whole thing invites you to sing along to the fullest. With over six minutes this is one of the longest songs. Although the structure, just like the first song, is fairly couplet chorus, this song is more interesting to listen to. The strings are superbly played, and at the end this is totally great!
The tempo in ‘Nasty Hustle‘ is a lot higher. It’s at the expense of the intelligibility of the vocals. This is not a bad thing, because this is nice and straightforward to rock.
Shelter‘ has a surprisingly small start. The raw vocals are very nice. The multiple voices are a good blend with the laid-back atmosphere.
The song stays in balance. For a moment there seems to be a rocking twist, this ‘outburst’ barely takes a second, but it’s cool! This is a surprising, cool rock ballad!
The title track is a rock song that matches the previous catchy songs. It is indeed nice to experience the positive vibe of music. A portion of music keeps you going (in difficult times), makes your head clear, stress free, in short music can be liberating. The build-up to the end of ‘Face The Music‘ is beautiful.
The songs that follow are also ‘old school’ rock. There is regularly well played with the distribution of the music over the boxes.
Surprising electronic sounds at the beginning of ‘If It’s Love‘. The keyboards that are interwoven in the background provide a hint of blues. The multiple voices are a bit sweet, yet they have been added very well. This song is played and sung quite small, the end is gone.
In ‘Hideaway‘ the strings are played a bit heavier, but the melody is preserved. The sweet sounding “Ahahaha” is repeated several times, and brings a touch of pop to the rock. This is alternated with the rough, sometimes slow, rock vocals. The instrumental piece contains nice details. Unfortunately, it ends with a rather boring fade out.
The drums make sure that ‘Since I’m Loving You‘ has a great start. After that there is rock, as you could hear in a number of previous songs.

Some of these eleven songs have a fairly predictable structure. It’s a pity that some songs (a bit unimaginative) are turned away. Luckily there are also songs that end surprisingly. Lovers of dynamics in drumming may miss this, but the tight drumming of Blas is certainly not disturbing. Together with Brad on bass, the rhythm section is fine. Vocals and guitars attract the most attention. These are the main pillars of this delicious no-nonsense rock album
