Sommige muzikanten brengen soloalbums uit, wat echt een one man project is. Dit geldt ook voor Mauricio Ibáñez uit Santiago (Chili). Zijn invloeden lopen uiteen van Blackfield naar Dream Theater en van alles wat ertussen zit. ‘A Dream Inside of a Dream’ is zijn vierde album, waarop zijn brede invloeden terug te horen zijn. De muziek is soms dromerig, maar er zijn ook donkere en zwaardere delen in te vinden.
Het album start dromerig met ‘The Color of the Air’. De toegevoegde ‘ruisende’ geluiden en andere extra’s zijn best aardig, maar houden iets te lang aan. Het gaat ten koste van de dromerige sfeer van dit instrumentale nummer.
In ’Empty Room’ valt het lichte Spaanse accent van Mauricio toevallig meteen op door het eerste woord “Nothing”. Zijn stem klinkt een beetje nasaal.
Dit is een rustig nummer waarin (akoestisch) gitaar en overige muziek vrij aardig in evenwicht zijn. Het geluid van ‘strijkers’ is mooi toegevoegd. Als Mauricio wat meer gespeeld had met vertragingen, en/of een minimalistisch stuk had ingelast, had dit nummer zeker indruk gemaakt.
‘Memories’ is meer rockend. Weer zijn er een aantal herhalingen in de muziek. Het ‘drumwerk’ is in bepaalde delen te eenvoudig van opzet. Bovendien is het geluid te kil. De lage diepe bastoon klinkt groezelig. De flinke lap tekst wordt in een vrij hoog tempo gezongen. Doordat de zinnen in ongeveer hetzelfde tempo en volume gezongen worden, komen de woorden niet helemaal tot zijn recht.
In ‘Shadows’ doet Mauricio zichzelf eigenlijk te kort. De ‘drums’ zijn namelijk te luid ten opzichte van het gitaarspel. In dit verder mooie nummer, schrijft hij duidelijk dingen van zich af. Hij geeft ons hiermee een kijkje in zijn leven.
‘Dream Devourer’ heeft een gave start. Daarna is de opbouw iets te voorspelbaar, want de wendingen verlopen over het algemeen volgens een vast patroon. Het gave gitaarspel had meer naar de voorgrond gemogen. Een goede opbouw naar het einde ontbreekt.
‘Black Holes in the Sky’ is een puur, instrumentaal nummer met een duidelijke opbouw naar het einde.
Na enkele ‘pianoklanken’ raken de eerste woorden van het klein gespeelde en gezongen ‘The Day You Stop Caring’ mij. Met zijn breekbare zang stelt hij zich kwetsbaar op. Het gitaarspel is zeer goed toegevoegd! De opbouw naar het einde is vrij summier, maar verder is dit een mooi nummer.
Na een ‘drumloos’, sferisch intro van ‘Cloudburst’, valt de kille klank van de drums op. Toch trekt het goede gitaarspel mijn aandacht. Dan lijkt dit nummer te eindigen, maar het is een gave wending. Wat een verrassing, dit had vaker gemogen! De sfeer van het begin van dit nummer keert terug. Het einde is vrij onverwacht.
Bij enkele nummers miste ik een gefundeerde structuur. Met ‘A Dream Inside of a Dream’ stelt Mauricio zich kwetsbaar op, dat is knap. Sommige delen hadden kleiner gespeeld mogen worden, dan hadden de gevoelige teksten meer impact gehad. Jammer dat hij zijn mooie gitaarspel niet vaker naar de voorgrond geduwd heeft. Hierin is hij iets te terughoudend geweest. De afwisseling tussen vocale en instrumentale nummers is prima. Last but not least, het tekstboekje ziet er prima uit. Ook dat heeft Mauricio zelf gemaakt. Daar kunnen veel bands een voorbeeld aan nemen.

Mauricio Ibáñez – A Dream Inside of a Dream
Some musicians release solo albums, which is really a one man project. This also applies to Mauricio Ibáñez from Santiago (Chile). His influences range from Blackfield to Dream Theater and everything in between. A Dream Inside of a Dream‘ is his fourth album, on which his broad influences can be heard. The music is sometimes dreamy, but there are also dark and heavier parts to be found.
The album starts dreamy with ‘The Color of the Air‘. The added ‘rustling’ sounds and other extras are quite nice, but last a bit too long. It is at the expense of the dreamy atmosphere of this instrumental song.
In ‘Empty Room‘ the light Spanish accent of Mauricio is immediately noticeable by the first word “Nothing“. His voice sounds a bit nasal.
This is a quiet song in which (acoustic) guitar and other music are quite well balanced. The sound of ‘strings’ is nicely added. If Mauricio had played more with delays, and/or inserted a minimalist piece, this song would certainly have made an impression.
Memories‘ is more rocking. Again there are some repetitions in the music. The ‘drumming’ is too simple in certain parts. Moreover, the sound is too cold. The low, deep bass tone sounds grubby. The large piece of text is sung at a fairly high tempo. Because the sentences are sung at about the same tempo and volume, the words do not really come into their own.
In ‘Shadows‘ Mauricio does himself too short. The ‘drums’ are too loud compared to the guitar playing. In this otherwise beautiful song, he clearly writes things off himself. He gives us a glimpse into his life.
Dream Devourer‘ has a great start. After that the structure is a bit too predictable, because the twists and turns generally follow a fixed pattern. The cool guitar playing could have been more in the foreground. A good structure towards the end is lacking.
Black Holes in the Sky‘ is a pure, instrumental song with a clear structure towards the end.
After a few ‘piano sounds’ the first words of the small played and sung ‘The Day You Stop Caring‘ touch me. With his fragile vocals he makes himself vulnerable. The guitar playing is very well added! The build-up to the end is rather brief, but otherwise this is a nice song.
After a ‘drumless’, atmospheric intro of ‘Cloudburst‘, the chilly sound of the drums is striking. Yet the good guitar playing attracts my attention. Then this song seems to end, but it is a cool turn of events. What a surprise, this should have been more often! The atmosphere of the beginning of this song returns. The end is quite unexpected.
With some of the songs I missed a well-founded structure. With ‘A Dream Inside of a Dream‘ Mauricio makes himself vulnerable, that’s great. Some parts should have been played smaller, then the sensitive lyrics would have had more impact. Too bad he didn’t push his beautiful guitar playing to the forefront more often. In this he has been a bit too reserved. The alternation between vocal and instrumental songs is fine. Last but not least, the textbook looks fine. Mauricio also made that himself. Many bands can take an example.
