Narnia – From Darkness To Light

Het intro van ‘You Are The Air That I Breathe’ is pakkend, maar Narnia weet me nog niet te overtuigen.

Het intro van ‘From Darkness To Light (Part 1)’ klinkt best veel belovend. De overgang naar ‘From Darkness To Light (Part 2)’ verloopt nogal vreemd.

Narnia – From Darkness To Light

Swedish Melodic metal band Narnia was founded in 1996 by guitarist Carl Johan Grimmark and singer Christian Liljegren. In 2010 there was a break that lasted four years. From Darkness To Light‘ is the second studio album after the break. Christianity will also be sung here.

A Crack In The Sky‘ starts cautiously, both in terms of intensity of the sound and with an impressive build-up. The guitar playing is sometimes nice and screaming, at other times the strings are played a bit heavier. There is little contrast between the light and heavy parts, also the volume differences are on the small side. The rhythm of this opening track is with some poppy movements.

The intro of ‘You Are The Air That I Breathe‘ is catchy, but Narnia doesn’t convince me yet. On their Face Book page they present themselves as a Melodic metal band. But so far the music tends more towards heavy rock, with a light poppy touch. The melodic parts could have been more extensive. The voice of frontman Christian Liljegren is an excellent combination with the background vocals of guitarist CJ Grimmark and bassist Jonatan Samuelsson. The powerful voice of Christian is also beautifully expressed in the quiet parts of ‘Has The River Run Dry‘.

The Armor Of God‘ has an electronic start. Fast and fairly predictable the tempo flies up. This song is positive, both in terms of lyrics and music.
The last small piece played with piano sounds is surprising. The structure of the song makes it feel as if the piano playing is stuck to it. The placement may be a bit odd, but I would have liked to have heard more of these surprises.

Because Narnia put down quite simple, but exciting songs, one can quickly sing along. At least for those who like to sing along with the lyrics about God and faith.

The intro of ‘From Darkness To Light (Part 1)‘ sounds quite promising. Andreas drums with dynamics, the melodic aspects are also explored. The build-up to more power is rather small. Because of this there is not enough contrast with the subdued movement. When the volume drops even further, only a little music and vocals remain. It is quite good, but there is a lack of deep emotion. This is partly due to the fact that vocals and music sound too flat, even the more heavily played piece lacks some character. The transition to ‘From Darkness To Light (Part 2)‘ is rather strange. In a fine melodic piece, the guitar playing is again convincing. The turn to piano playing fails, a pity! Just before the end the piano playing comes back. Now the turn is better, the piano solo is cut off too early.

With about 4 to 5 minutes per song, this album of 10 songs takes a little more than 45 minutes. Not all songs have a ‘head and a tail’, regularly there is a lack of a solid build-up to the end. The foundation is not solid enough, moreover, there is too little dynamics. Because of this, the songs don’t really get off to a good start. The whole thing comes across as superficial, while it does contain good instrumental and melodic parts. Not Christians may find the lyrics too Godloving. Christians will most likely appreciate these lyrics. Probably this group will sing the lyrics in a live concert with all their heart. Because even though this is more of a rock than a metal album, it is exciting.
