De Nederlandse prog metalband Cirrha Niva werd zo’n 26 jaar geleden opgericht in Den Bosch. Het verhaal achter het ontstaan van de bandnaam kun je hier lezen, in een interview dat ik met de band had in juli 2016. Dat was kort na het uitkomen van het vorige album ‘Out of the freakshow’.

Om het tienjarig bestaan van het album ‘For moments never done’ te vieren verschijnt er op 13 september een speciale limited editie LP.
De songteksten op ‘For moments never done’ waren persoonlijk voor Legrand. Voor hem was het een vorm van therapie. In plaats de op geschreven ellende te verbranden, gebuikte hij dit als songteksten. Toch is het geen conceptalbum.

‘The Fooling’ gaat over de nare jeugd van Legrand. Je hoort een telefonische noodoproep en chaotische muziek. Ondertussen hoor je paniek in een kinderstem, en een diepe schreeuw van gastvocalist Robin de Groot. Legrand zingt zijn woorden op krachtige wijze. Dit vloeit over naar een rustiger stuk. Nu zijn de woorden van Legrand duidelijker te verstaan.
De vrouw aan de telefoon herhaalt een paar keer: “The police are on their way, oke?” Na een tijdje zegt het kinderstemmetje: ”Mama, the police are coming”. Je zal toch maar zo’n jeugd hebben gehad, brrr.. Kippenvel… keer op keer. Gelukkig staan de teksten op de binnenhoes, want tijdens het strak gespeelde stuk is de zang moeilijk te verstaan. Hier zijn de woede en frustratie van Legrand bijna voelbaar. De gestapelde stemmen, die slechts zo nu en dan te horen zijn, geven nog wat extra’s. Op het laatst hoor je nog een stukje van het telefoongesprek. De monotone toon waarmee deze openingstrack wegsterft is subliem gekozen!

‘Framed’ heeft een kalme start, zonder drums, dit maakt me nieuwsgierig naar wat er verder komt. Dit blijken gave, strak gespeelde stukken te zijn waarin de drums volop te horen zijn. Het geluid van wat lijkt op strijkers zit er later in verweven. De tempo-en volumewisselingen vloeien in elkaar over. Er zijn ook plotselinge transities, ook deze zijn zeer goed. De opbouw naar het einde is mooi en strak.

Het gitaarspel is veelzijdig, dit is zowel meeslepend, gillend of juist zwaar bespeeld. In ‘Running From The Source’ is dit zelfs sprankelend. Bijzonder voor een prog metal band. Toch is en blijft alles in harmonie met elkaar.

‘Self-Chosen’ start met onweer en een behoorlijke bak power in de muziek. De snaren zijn met vlagen strak en zwaar bespeeld. Weer hoor je allerlei emoties in de stem van LeGrand. ‘Self Chosen’ gaat over een vriend die besloten heeft om uit het leven te stappen. De woorden zijn niet allemaal makkelijk te verstaan. Vooral als je (op de binnenhoes) meeleest met de tekst hakken de woorden “Never thought it would be self chosen” er best wel in. Na een stuk vol onrust is het instrumentale stuk rustig. Onweer.. stilte, dan af en toe wat ‘gerommel’. Daarna weer de stilte. Het blijft even stil, terwijl de cd nog niet is afgelopen. Deze stilte benadrukt de stilte die iemand achter kan laten.
“Less is more”, zelden is dat zó van toepassing geweest als hier.

Deze zeven tracks zijn gecompliceerd, maar zitten fantastisch in elkaar. Rustigere delen worden afgewisseld met een lekker portie metal, die vast ook bij prog rock liefhebbers in de smaak zal vallen. Zoals eerder gezegd is het gitaarspel gevarieerd, dit wordt prima ondersteund door bas en drums. Al moet ik wel zeggen dat de drumvellen vrij strakgespannen zijn, wat soms ten koste gaat van de dynamiek. Zo mist de kleur van het slagwerk in het meeslepende ‘Spring Before Winter’ wat warmte. Legrand geeft zich helemaal. Met zijn veelzijdige stem legt hij veel emotie in de nummers. Heel terecht dat juist dit album op vinyl uitkomt. Dit doen ze in eigen beheer, met wereldwijde distributie.

Cirrha Niva – ‘For moments never done’.

The Dutch prog metal band Cirrha Niva was founded around 26 years ago in Den Bosch. The story behind the creation of the band name can be read here, in an interview I had with the band in July 2016. That was shortly after the release of the previous album ‘Out of the freakshow‘.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the album ‘For moments never done‘, a special limited edition LP will be released on 13 September.
The lyrics on ‘For moments never done‘ were personal to Legrand. For him it was a form of therapy. Instead of burning up the written misery, he used it as lyrics. Yet it is not a concept album.

The Fooling‘ is about Legrand’s horrible youth. You hear a telephone emergency call and chaotic music. Meanwhile you hear panic in a child’s voice, and a deep scream from guest vocalist Robin de Groot. Legrand sings his words powerfully. This flows into a quieter piece. Now the words of Legrand are clearer to understand.
The woman on the phone repeats a few times: “The police are on their way, okay?” After a while the child’s voice says: “Mama, the police are coming“. If you had such a childhood, brrr… Goosebumps… over and over again. Luckily the lyrics are on the inner sleeve, because during the tightly played piece the words are difficult to understand. Here you almost can feel the anger and frustration of Legrand. The layered voices, which can only be heard once in a while, give a little extra. At the end you can hear a piece of the telephone conversation. The monotone tone with which this opening track dies away is sublime chosen!

Framed‘ has a calm start, without drums, this makes me curious about what comes next. These appear to be cool, tightly played fragments in which the drums can be heard in abundance. The sound of what looks like strings is interwoven with it later on. The changes in tempo and volume flow into one another. There are also sudden transitions, these too are very good. The build-up to the end is beautiful and tight.

The guitar playing is versatile, this is either compelling, screaming or heavily played. In ‘Running From The Source‘ this is even sparkling. Special for a prog metal band. Yet everything is and remains in harmony with each other.

‘Self-Chosen‘ starts with a thunderstorm and a lot of power in the music. The strings are tight and heavily played. Again you can hear all kinds of emotions in the voice of Legrand. ‘Self Chosen‘ is about a friend who has decided to step out of life. The words are not all easy to understand. Especially when you read the text (on the inner sleeve), the words “Never thought it would be self chosen” will touch you. After a piece full of anxiety, the instrumental piece is quiet. Thunderstorm… silence, then occasionally some ‘rumbling’. Then again.. silence. It stays quiet for a while, while the CD is still spinning. This silence emphasizes the silence that someone can leave behind.
“Less is more”, seldom has that been so effective as here.

These seven tracks are complicated, but fantastic. Quieter parts are interspersed with a nice portion of metal, which will probably also appeal to prog rock lovers. As mentioned before, the guitar playing is varied, this is well supported by bass and drums. Although I have to say that the drumheads are quite tight, which sometimes is at the expense of the dynamics. The colour of the percussion in the compelling ‘Spring Before Winter‘ lacks some warmth. Legrand gives everything. With his versatile voice he puts a lot of emotion in the songs. Quite rightly that this album is released on vinyl. They do this under their own management, with worldwide distribution.
