Gandalf’s Fist – The Clockwork Prologue

Hun nieuwste album heet ‘The Clockwork Prologue’.

The Belly of the Earth’ is een rustig, akoestisch nummer.

CD 2
Sun Sickness’ is een kort minimalistisch nummer, waarna ‘The Boy’ in ‘Menders of Devices’ spreekt.

In ‘Leader of Men’ ligt het tempo flink hoog.

Gandalf’s Fist – The Clockwork Prologue

The English prog rock band Gandalf’s Fist was founded about fourteen years ago. They launch their albums through their own label, Nightkeeper Productions.
In 2016 they released ‘The Clockwork Fable‘. This steampunk story takes place in the fantasy city of ‘Cogtopolis’.
Their latest album is called ‘The Clockwork Prologue’. This double album is not a follow-up album, but an extension of ‘The Clockwork Fable‘. The Clockwork Prologue‘ is also set in ‘Cogtopolis. This ancient city (of which the ‘Primarch’ is the monarch) consists of several caves and lies below the surface, there is no daylight present. The sun is a legend, ‘Lamplighters’ work hard to keep the plasma lighting in a burning state. The inhabitants have their own time schedule, they use steam to generate energy. That is in short how this city functions.

The Belly of the Earth‘ is a quiet, acoustic song. This title makes it a bit clear where the story takes place.
An Expedition Amidst the Ice Burrows‘ is the first spoken part between ‘Father’ and The Boy’ with his robot voice. The sampling certainly gives a surplus value, in the background there is some music added. The vocal plays are interspersed with ‘normal tracks’. These are well constructed and varied, with enough rock and small parts played, or acoustic parts.
In ‘Solar Huntress‘ the choral singing is noticeable, this has an instrumental function. In the light poppy parts, it merges with the music. During the subdued parts it comes to the forefront.

The voice in ‘Blackening‘ is distorted and theatrical, at first it is between singing and talking. Distorted and normal vocals alternate a number of times. During an instrumental piece it seems as if the keys and the strings are battling each other. At high speed the musical notes are thrown around. When the strings are a bit more in the foreground, the keys wrestle their way through again. Suddenly peace returns… this only takes a moment. Again, the tempo climbs, now the keys seem to be more dominant. With compelling guitar playing the whole thing becomes a bit calmer. The end is very calm, beautiful!

CD 2
Sun Sickness’ is a short minimalist song, after which ‘The Boy’ speaks in ‘Menders of Devices‘. Again, the sampling is exceptionally well added. This clarifies that the story continues in the workspace of ‘The Clokkemaker‘. The light, or lack of it, is also discussed here.
The Clokkemaker‘ has a quiet start that transforms into a tightly played piece. Various transformations follow. The ‘string instruments’ are subtle, but sublimely added. When the volume in the music increases, the vocals are powerful. The background vocals are also nicely applied. In short, this is a well-built epic.

In ‘Leader of Men‘ the tempo is quite high. The tight pieces are perfectly stuck between the uptempo pieces. The stacked voices are without words, but well integrated. The guitar playing and keyboard work are special, the rhythm section is much more than “just” a basis. The rhythm changes a lot, and the rhythms are not that simple, not at all. This is first-class prog.

Wheels in Motion‘ is the last part of the radio play. This is followed by ‘The Lamplighter (Overture)’, the first piece is quiet. There is an interaction between rock and quiet parts. In both segments there are plenty of details to be heard. On top of that there is a nice play with the distribution over the headphones. This well-built epic seems to die away, but that is postponed for a while. The minimalist piece at the end takes longer than expected. In the distance you can hear a few spoken words, they are not definable, but that is not necessary. What a cool ending!

The texts of the radio plays are not written in the beautiful textbook. The real actors speak clearly, and their voices differ enough from each other. Yet it is not easy to fully discover who is saying what. That’s why it’s difficult to get the whole story in one go. Because radio plays and regular tracks are interspersed, you get a different listening experience compared to an ‘ordinary’ CD.
On 25 September ‘The Clockwork Prologue‘ will be released on vinyl. The limited edition is available as a double in Ice-Badger blue transparent and Clockwork Orange transparent. Of these, only a few test pressings are still available. The black vinyl is still available. With a bit of fantasy, you can let yourself be carried away in this world of steampunks, then you can also buy the double CD, that is already available.
