Heidra is een power-black-folk metalband uit Kopenhagen. ‘The Blackening Tide’ is een conceptalbum, en is een vervolg op ‘Awaiting Dawn’ uit 2014, waarin een koning werd afgezet. In ‘The Blackening Tide’ gaat het verhaal verder, er komt oorlog.
‘Dawn’ heeft een akoestische start die van ver lijkt te komen. Er wordt percussie toegevoegd, dit vormt de inleiding naar zwaardere muziek. Geheel op de achtergrond zijn er licht klassieke/folk elementen. Morten Bryld laat cleane zang horen, waar een licht theatraal randje aan zit. Dit wisselt hij af met grunts. Zowel in de cleane zang, als in de grunts weet hij variatie aan te brengen. Het snelle metal ritme wordt afgewisseld, dan wel vermengd met melodische delen. Het einde is vrij onverwacht, maar wel gaaf.
Het intro ‘The Price in Blood’ wordt gevormd door snaren en ‘strijkers’. De wending naar volle bak power is er best snel, het tempo is opzwepend, en blijft een tijd hoog. Ondertussen zijn er verschillende wendingen in zang en muziek. Er zijn enkele pianoklanken en andere details in dit muzikale ‘geweld’. Sommige details hoor je pas na een aantal keer luisteren. De laagjes in de muziek zijn fantastisch gestapeld. Op de achtergrond klinkt geregeld ‘koorzang’ dit wordt gebruikt als instrument en klinkt licht klassiek, maar heeft ook een vleugje folk invloeden.
Enkele pianoklanken en het geluid van strijkers geven ‘Rain of Embers’ een vrij sombere maar boeiende start. Er komen wat metal elementen naar boven drijven, dit wordt langzaam sterker en intenser. Na een metal stuk komen de ‘piano’ en de ‘strijkers’ weer terug. De sombere muziek raakt me. Je hoort de emotie in de stem van Morten als hij over het slagveld zingt. De muziek wordt weer krachtiger, deze opbouw in volume en tempo is geweldig! Het einde sterft mooi weg.
‘The Blackening tide’ start met redelijk snel akoestische gitaarspel. Zang en het geluid van strijkers komen erbij, dit is perfect in balans. De muziek wordt zwaarder, tempo en volume gaan omhoog, maar de melodie blijft. De zang wisselt van clean naar grunts en weer terug. Enkele pianoklanken nestelen zich tussen de metal. Koorzang smelt samen met de muziek. Terwijl het tempo hoog ligt, keren de pianoklanken terug. Ook de titeltrack is fantastisch opgebouwd. Het einde had iets langer aan mogen houden.
De meerdere laagjes akoestisch gitaarspel aan de start van ’Hell’s Depths’ zijn gaaf. De verandering naar metal is misschien niet heel verrassend, maar wel perfect uitgevoerd.
Pianospel onderbreekt de metal een paar keer. Er zijn diverse plotsklapse veranderingen, toch vliegt Heidra nergens uit de bocht. Vlak voor het einde is er de terugkeer naar akoestisch gitaarspel.
‘Awaiting Dawn’ en ‘The Blackening Tide’ horen bij elkaar, maar ze kunnen gerust afzonderlijk van elkaar geluisterd worden. Bovendien verschillen ze genoeg van elkaar, zodat je ze ook na elkaar kunt luisteren. Terug naar ‘The Blackening Tide’: De ‘strijkers’ en de ‘koorzang’ hadden zo nu en dan meer naar de voorgrond mogen komen om zo meer impact te verkrijgen. De transities in zang en muziek verlopen zeer goed. Ondanks het concept zijn de nummers opzwepend van karakter. Als ik zonder koptelefoon luister, móet ik het volume gewoon flink ver opendraaien. Het gitaarwerk van beide gitaristen is subliem. Regelmatig is er gillend gitaarwerk, op andere momenten klinken de gitaren, samen met de bas heerlijk zwaar. Het tempo ligt soms hoog, maar de dynamiek in het drummen blijft aanwezig. De stem van Morten Bryld is enorm veelzijdig. Zodoende werd ik bij de eerste keer luisteren al gegrepen. Toch groeiden de goed opgebouwde nummers nog naarmate ik de cd vaker luisterde.

Morten Bryld plays clean vocals, with a light theatrical edge. He alternates this with grunts. Both in the clean vocals and in the grunts he knows how to bring variation. The fast metal rhythm is alternated, or mixed with melodic parts. The end is quite unexpected, but cool.
The intro ‘The Price in Blood‘ is formed by strings and ‘strings’. The turn to full power is quite fast, the tempo is exciting, and stays high for a while. Meanwhile there are several turns in vocals and music. There are some piano sounds and other details in this musical ‘violence’. Some details can only be heard after a number of listening sessions. The layers in the music are fantastically stacked. In the background you can often hear ‘choral singing’ which is used as an instrument and sounds light classical, but also has a touch of folk influences.
Some piano sounds and the sound of strings give ‘Rain of Embers‘ a rather sombre but fascinating start. Some metal elements float to the surface, this slowly becomes stronger and more intense. After a metal piece the ‘piano’ and the ‘strings’ return. The gloomy music touches me. You can hear the emotion in the voice of Morten as he sings over the battlefield. The music becomes more powerful again, this build-up in volume and tempo is great! The end dies away nicely.
The Blackening tide‘ starts with fairly fast acoustic guitar playing. Vocals and the sound of strings are added, this is perfectly balanced. The music gets heavier, tempo and volume go up, but the melody remains. The vocals change from clean to grunts and back again. Some piano sounds nestle between the metal. Choral singing melts with the music. While the tempo is high, the piano sounds return. The title track is also fantastically constructed. The end should have lasted a bit longer.
The multiple layers of acoustic guitar playing at the start of ‘Hell’s Depths‘ are cool. The change to metal may not be very surprising, but it is perfectly executed.
Piano playing interrupts the metal a few times. There are several sudden clap changes, yet Heidra doesn’t fly out of the corner anywhere. Just before the end there is a return to acoustic guitar playing.
Awaiting Dawn‘ and ‘The Blackening Tide‘ belong together, but they can be listened to separately. Moreover, they differ enough from each other, so you can listen to them one after the other. Back to ‘The Blackening Tide‘: The ‘strings’ and the ‘choral singing’ should have come to the fore now and then to get more impact. The transitions in vocals and music are going very well. Despite the concept, the songs are uplifting in character. When I listen without headphones, I just have to turn up the volume a lot. The guitar skills of both guitarists are sublime. Regularly there is screaming guitar playing, at other times the guitars sound, together with the bass wonderfully heavy. The tempo is sometimes high, but the dynamics in drumming remain present. The voice of Morten Bryld is very versatile. That is why I was seized the first time I listened. Yet the well built up songs still grew as I listened to the CD more often.
