Karibow werd ruim 20 jaar geleden opgericht door zanger, multi -instrumentalist en producer Oliver Rüsing. Vooral de laatste jaren is Oliver nogal productief. Met dit nieuwe dubbelalbum MOnuMENTO meegerekend, staat de teller op vier albums in ruim twee jaar.
CD1 Moments
Allerlei geluiden geven dit album een bijzondere start. Het is vrij snel duidelijk dat dit de titeltrack is. De opbouw naar meer rock is goed. Het geluid is helder, maar de wendingen verlopen niet altijd perfect. Delen van de tekst keren terug. Er zijn elektronische geluidjes en gesproken tekst toegevoegd. De achtergrondzang is subtiel. Er is veel om naar te luisteren, je hoort zelfs kinderinstrumenten. Het blijft toegankelijk, en delen blijven gemakkelijk in je hoofd kleven. De woorden ‘Monumento’ worden weer krachtig gezongen. Je merkt dit de opbouw naar het einde is. De saxofoon scheurt hier mooi doorheen. Deze meeslepende openingstrack heeft een bijzonder einde.
‘The Rainign Silince’ gaat wat meer de poprock kant uit. In tegenstelling tot vorig nummer ben je eerder geneigd om grotere delen van de tekst mee te zingen.
Piano en diverse (elektronische) geluiden klinken samen tijdens het rustige intro van ‘District of Dignity’. Dit is een duet met Hayley Griffiths (ex-Karnataka). Haar prachtige stem is herkenbaar. Er is iets te weinig volumeverschil tussen de rustig gespeelde delen en de stukken die meer rocken. Daardoor komt dit nummer net niet volledig tot leven.
‘Private Babylon’ heeft een gaaf einde. Het intro van ‘Red Feathers’ sluit hier mooi op aan. Je hoort allerlei merkwaardige geluiden en een heldere stem die wordt ingezet als instrument. De langzame, soms bijna fluisterende zang van Oliver past bij ingetogen muziek. Fluisterende gesproken woorden vormen een mooie toevoeging aan dit ingetogen nummer.
Ook ‘Seekers Of Dawn’ bevat ruim voldoende onverwachte elementen, waardoor ook deze track blijft boeien. Tijdens een prima portie blues rock hoor je mooi harmonicaspel. Dit lijkt te eindigen, maar er is een verandering naar klein gaaf gespeeld deel. De warme, tedere stem van Oliver komt hier mooi uit. Hierna is er lekker gillend gitaarspel in een rockend deel.
CD2 Monuments
De epic ‘Monuments’ duurt ruim drie kwartier, en bestaat uit twee delen. Deze zijn onderverdeeld in subhoofdstukken.
Het 1e deel, ‘Prelude to a Fairy Tale’ is een klassiek georiënteerd instrumentaal stuk dat allerlei leuke details bevat. Je hoort de wending naar ‘Lost is all I am’
Het eerste stukje is nog instrumentaal. De tekst blijkt een luistertekst te zijn. Op de achtergrond zijn regelmatig klassieke elementen te horen. Een deel van de woorden zijn in het Duits verteld en gezongen.
Meestal hoor je de wending naar een volgend deel. Alle delen hebben mooie veranderingen, deze zijn vaak super geplaatst. Helaas is de geluidskwaliteit niet constant perfect. Zonde dat er enkele kleine oneffenheden zitten in deze goed gecomponeerde epic. Gelukkig is het geluid over het overgrote deel wel mooi helder. ‘Keeper Of Fairy Blood’ heeft een prachtig klein gespeeld stuk. Je hoort het geluid van een muziekdoosje. Er is een gave opbouw naar meer volume, het geluid is prima verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Dit vormt een geniale opbouw naar hoofdstuk twee. ‘Prelude To a Crusade’ heeft een klassieke start. De stem van Simone Stiers vormt één geheel met de rustige muziek. ‘The Lonely Way’ heeft een pittiger karakter. In de rock zitten hele korte klassieke stukjes gemengd.
In het tiende, en laatste deel, komt het woord ‘crusade’ weer meerdere keren terug. Hoewel je merkt dat dit de opbouw naar het einde is, komt het einde toch sneller dan verwacht.
Oliver heeft niet alleen alle teksten en muziek geschreven, hij heeft het grotendeels zelf opgenomen. Bovendien heeft hij alles zelf gemixt en gemasterd.
Helaas zitten er hier een paar slordigheidjes/foutjes in. De productie is dus niet perfect. Ondanks deze minpuntjes is het nog altijd een zeer goed album geworden. Ik kan niet onvermeld laten dat al het artwork er weer fantastisch uitziet.

CD1 Moments
All kinds of sounds give this album a special start. It’s clear pretty soon that this is the title track. The build up to more rock is good. The sound is clear, but the turns are not always perfect. Parts of the lyrics return. There are electronic sounds and spoken text added. The background vocals are subtle. There is a lot to listen to, you can even hear children’s instruments. It remains accessible, and parts stick easily in your head. The words ‘Monumento‘ are sung in powerful again. You notice this is the build-up to the end. The saxophone tears nicely through this. This compelling opening track has a special ending.
The Rainign Silince‘ goes a bit more in the direction of pop rock. In contrast to the previous song you are more inclined to sing along larger parts of the lyrics.
Piano and various (electronic) sounds sound together during the quiet intro of ‘District of Dignity‘. This is a duet with Hayley Griffiths (ex-Karnataka). Her beautiful voice is recognizable. There is a little too little difference in volume between the quietly played parts and the pieces that rock more. That’s why this song doesn’t come to life completely.
Private Babylon’ has a cool ending. The intro of ‘Red Feathers‘ fits in nicely with this. You hear all kinds of strange sounds and a clear voice that is used as an instrument. The slow, sometimes almost whispering vocals of Oliver fit with subdued music. Whispering spoken words are a nice addition to this subdued song.
Also ‘Seekers Of Dawn‘ contains plenty of unexpected elements, making this track remains fascinating. During a good portion of blues rock you can hear beautiful harmonica playing. This seems to end, but there is a change to a coolly played part. The warm, tender voice of Oliver comes out nicely here. After this there is screaming guitar playing in a rocking part.
CD2 Monuments
The epic ‘Monuments‘ lasts over three quarters of an hour, and consists of two parts. These are divided into subchapters.
The first movement, ‘Prelude to a Fairy Tale‘ is a classically oriented instrumental piece that contains all kinds of nice details. You hear the turn to ‘Lost is all I am‘.
The first piece is still instrumental. The text turns out to be a listening text. In the background you can regularly hear classical elements. Some of the words are told and sung in German.
Usually you hear the turn to the next part. All parts have nice changes, these are often super placed. Unfortunately the sound quality is not constantly perfect. A pity there are some small irregularities in this well composed epic. Luckily the sound is mostly nice and clear. Keeper Of Fairy Blood‘ has a beautiful small piece played. You can hear the sound of a music box. There is a nice build up to more volume, the sound is well distributed over the headphones. This is an ingenious build-up to chapter two. Prelude To a Crusade‘ has a classic start. The voice of Simone Stiers forms a whole with the quiet music. The Lonely Way‘ has a spicier character. In the rock are very short classical pieces mixed.
In the tenth, and last part, the word ‘crusade‘ comes back several times. Although you notice that this is the construction towards the end, the end comes faster than expected.
Oliver hasn’t only written all the lyrics and music, he has also largely recorded it himself. Moreover, he has everything himself mixed and mastered.
Unfortunately there are a few sloppinesss/faults here. The production is not perfect. Despite these flaws it is still a very good album. I can’t help mentioning that all the artwork looks fantastic again.
