Carthagods werd eind jaren ‘90 opgericht en is één van de eerste belangrijke progressieve metal bands uit Tunesië. Ze zetten innovatieve live shows neer en traden al diverse keren in Europa op. Door allerlei omstandigheden kwam hun debuutalbum, Carthagods, pas in 2015 uit. Op 26 april zag hun tweede album, ‘The Monster in me’ het levenslicht.
‘Whispers From The Wicked’ heeft een heerlijk pittige start. Je merkt dat we metal mogen verwachten. De zware manier van zingen past daar prima bij. Grunts worden afgewisseld met ‘donkere’ zang, soms klinken deze zangstijlen tegelijkertijd. De lichte symfonische elementen klinken best ver op de achtergrond. In eerste instantie vallen ze niet heel erg op, maar dat is hier het mooie. Want de harmonie tussen licht en zwaar, en tussen ritme en melodie is prima. Mede door de gastzangers is de zang veelzijdig, je hoort niet alleen grunts of duistere zang, maar een stem gaat soms behoorlijk de hoogte in. Met vlagen is het gitaarspel heerlijk gillend. Kortom er is veel om naar te luisteren.
Hoewel de start van ‘The Monster In Me’ zacht is, voel je dat er een opbouw gaat komen naar de metal. De manier waarop is een beetje voorspelbaar, maar het is goed gespeeld. Het ritme is strak en opzwepend. De symfo is zo nu en dan op de achtergrond aanwezig. Dan gaat het even over naar het zwaardere werk. Met de woorden “The monster in me” ‘blèr’ je als vanzelf mee. Dat zal live gespeeld een fantastische beleving geven. Gillend gitaarspel en zware snaren vormen een goede balans. Het refrein is niet heel uniek, maar ligt wel heerlijk in het gehoor.
Dat geldt ook voor de start van ‘The Devil’s Dolls’. De teksten gaan natuurlijk niet over rozengeur en maneschijn. Maar het geheel is niet al te donker. De kleur van de zang is toegankelijk en de muziek is opzwepend neergezet. Dit vraagt om het volume van de cd flink op de schroeven.
De start van ‘A Last Sigh’ verloopt rustig, vrij snel is er een licht poppy ritme dat overgaat naar rock-metal. Hier worden klassieke aspecten aan toegevoegd. Aymen Ben Hamed drumt krachtig en Yessine Belghith laat vette bas grooves horen. De zang is met volle overtuiging, de stem klinkt gedreven. Enkele zinnen worden gegrunt. Het ritme is dreunend en heeft even voorrang boven de melodie. Dan scheurt de gitaar er doorheen en het ritme transformeert. Timo Somers (Delain) is lead gitiarist. Samen met Tarak Ben Sassi zorgt hij voor fantastisch gitaarspel. Dit had net zo goed te titeltrack kunnen zijn, wat een gaaf nummer!
‘Memories Of Neverending Pains’ heeft een integer gespeeld intro. Het ruwe randje op de stem komt hier mooi uit. Dit nummer blijft langer rustig dan de andere. De opbouw naar metal, met de symfonische toevoegingen, is geweldig. Tempo en volume gaan nog verder omhoog, en nemen daarna een duikvlucht naar beneden. Door dit contrast komt het klein gespeeld stukje extra binnen. Iets vroeger dan gehoopt wordt alles weer opgeschroefd. Dit zeer sterke nummer eindigt klein.
Het instrumentale ‘The Rebirth’ is een gave afsluiter. Deze acht nummers hebben een uitstekende balans tussen symfonie en metal, zang en muziek vormen een constante eenheid. Mahdi Khema is de zanger van Carthagods. De gastzangers zijn Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity) en Mark Jansen (Epica/MaYan), deze stemmen sluiten naadloos bij elkaar aan. ‘The Monster in me’ is een toegankelijk, opzwepend en boeiend album. Het mag duidelijk zijn dat Carthagods een geweldig album heeft gemaakt!

From time to time guitar playing is screaming/rocking. In short, there is a lot to listen to.
Although the start of ‘The Monster In Me‘ is gentle, you can feel that the metal will get a boost. The way is a bit predictable, but it is well played. The rhythm is tight and exciting. The symphony is occasionally present in the background. Then it goes on to the heavier work. You will ‘yell–a-long’ automatically with the words “The monster in me”. Played live, it will give a fantastic experience. Screaming guitar playing and heavy strings form a good balance. The chorus is not very unique, but it’s a joy to listen to.
The same goes for the start of ‘The Devil’s Dolls‘. The lyrics are of course not ‘all puppies and sunshine’. But the whole is not too dark. The colour of the vocals is accessible and the music is set in an exciting way. This asks to crank up the loudness of the CD.
The start of ‘A Last Sigh‘ is quiet, pretty fast there is a light poppy rhythm that changes to rock-metal. Classical aspects are added to this. Aymen Ben Hamed drums powerfully and Yessine Belghith plays some great bass grooves. The vocals are with full conviction, the voice sounds motivated. Some sentences are grunted. The rhythm is pounding and has some priority over the melody. Then the guitar breaks through and the rhythm transforms. Timo Somers (Delain) is lead guitarist. Together with Tarak Ben Sassi he provides fantastic guitar playing. This could just as well have been a title track, what a cool song!
‘Memories Of Neverending Pains‘ has played an intro with integrity. The rough edge on the voice comes out nicely. This song stays quiet longer than the others. The build-up to metal, with the symphonic additions, is great. Tempo and volume go up even further, and then they drop down. Because of this contrast, the small played piece comes in extra. A little earlier than hoped, everything is boosted up again. This very strong song ends small.
The instrumental ‘The Rebirth‘ is a cool ending. These eight songs have an excellent balance between symphony and metal, vocals and music form a constant unity. Mahdi Khema is the singer of Carthagods. The guest singers are Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity) and Mark Jansen (Epica/MaYan), these voices fit together seamlessly. ‘The Monster in me‘ is an accessible, exciting and fascinating album.
