Zo’n negen jaar geleden werd in Engeland een prog band opgericht met de naam ‘Nth Degree’. Een paar jaar later veranderde ze dit in ‘Nth Ascension’. Onder deze naam brachten ze twee full cd’s uit. Dit zijn ‘Ascension Of Kings’ (2014) en ‘In Fine Initium’ (2015). Deze albums kwamen uit via Melodic Revolution Records.
Begin dit jaar richtten deze proggers hun eigen label ‘Metatronic Records’ op. Nu is hun derde album ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ uit.
‘The Opening’ start zachtjes met regen en onweer. Dit wordt gecombineerd met sferische muziek. De dromerige “zang” is zonder woorden en smelt samen met de muziek, deze blijft tot en met het einde heerlijk dromerig.
‘True Identity’ start pittiger. Deze pit wordt langzaam verder opgebouwd. Michael Alan Taylor zingt op licht theatrale manier. Hij zet dit minder dik aan dan voorheen en wisselt dit af met de meer neutralere zang. De vette bass grooves zijn van Gavin Walker. Instrumentale delen, waarin gitarist Martin Walker een mooi aandeel in heeft, worden prima afgewisseld met vocale. Het laatste stukje is strak gespeeld.
De toetsen hebben de hoofdrol bij aanvang van ‘Fire In The Sky’. Dit is het werk van TEN toetsenist Darrel Treece-Birch. Het eerste stuk is rustig, dat verandert als de drums en snaren duidelijk te horen zijn. Het ritme is strak maar opzwepend, de zang sluit daarbij aan. Er zijn meerdere stemmen gestapeld, dit is een prima toegeving. Doordat een aantal dingen een paar keer terug keren is het verrassende effect van de wendingen iets minder. Daardoor vallen de details, bijvoorbeeld in het drumwerk van Craig Walker, extra goed op. Mooi maar onverwacht einde.
‘Reconciled’ is de eerste gave epic, deze dooft langzaam uit.
De Clanaan kroniek begon op ‘Ascension Of Kings’. Nu zijn we aangekomen bij ‘The Gathering (Clanaan pt7)‘. Gesproken woorden mengen zich met zang. De woorden zijn hetzelfde, maar lopen niet geheel synchroon, dit geeft iets speciaals. Zang en muziek samen zijn op goede manier aangrijpend.
Ook ‘Journeys End (Clanaan pt8)’ heeft een zeer goede structuur. De wending iets na het midden is super. De meeslepende muziek is nauwelijks te doorgronden en heeft bijna een hypnotische werking. Een vleugje uit een melodie van een voorgaande cd keert subtiel terug. Het is klein gespeeld, maar voelt groots aan. Deze epic dooft uiterst langzaam weg.
‘Lament (Clanaan pt9)’ is een rustig, maar heel kort deel uit de kroniek.
Tot slot ‘Sound To Light’, ook hier fantastische wendingen. De details zijn subliem verdeeld over de koptelefoon. De muziek is soms zo intens, dat ze onder je huid kruipt. Er is een totale harmonie tussen toetsen en snaren, ze smelten soms samen. Zo heel af en toe zijn er in de verte details op de cimbalen te horen. Het sferische gedeelte duurt iets aan de lange kant, dan worden tempo en volume omhooggestuwd. Deze epic lijkt weg te sterven, even heerst er stilte…. dan komt er nòg een stukje sferische muziek. Wat is dit mooi gedaan!
Er zijn overeenkomsten, want diverse elementen uit de twee voorgaande albums keren terug. Toch vallen ze niet in herhaling, want je hoort diverse verschillen. Het grootste verschil is dat ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ moet groeien omdat het gecompliceerder in elkaar zit. Soms klinkt het imposant, zonder dat het bombastisch is. Andere momenten zijn atmosferisch. Beide “disciplines” bevatten nogal wat details. Alle nummers zijn boeiend van structuur. De teksten zijn vrij ingewikkeld, zang en muziek zijn constant in balans. De verdeling over de koptelefoon is super. Nth Ascension was al goed, maar heeft zich weer weten te verbeteren!

Nth Ascension – Stranger Than Fiction

True Identity‘ starts more spirit. This is slowly built up. Michael Alan Taylor sings in a slightly theatrical way. He uses this less strongly than before, and alternates it with the more neutral vocals. The awesome bass grooves are by Gavin Walker. Instrumental parts, in which guitarist Martin Walker has a nice part, are perfectly interspersed with vocals. The last piece is played tightly.
The keyboards have the leading role at the beginning of ‘Fire In The Sky‘. This is the job of TEN keyboardist Darrel Treece-Birch. The first piece is quiet, that changes when the drums and (bass)guitar are clearly audible. The rhythm is tight but exciting, the vocals match. There are several voices accumulated, this is an excellent concession. Because a number of things return a few times, the surprising effect of the twists and turns is slightly less. This makes the details, for example in Craig Walker’s drums, stand out even more. Beautiful but unexpected end.
Reconciled‘ is the first cool epic, this one slowly fades away.
The Clanaan chronicle started on ‘Ascension Of Kings’. Now we have arrived at ‘The Gathering (Clanaan pt7)‘. Spoken words mix with vocals. The words are the same, but are not completely synchronous, this gives something special. Singing and music together are moving in a good way.
Also ‘Journeys End (Clanaan pt8)‘ has a very good structure. The turn slightly after the middle is superb. The compelling music is hard to fathom and has almost a hypnotic effect. A hint of a melody from a previous CD subtly returns. It is played small, but feels grand. This epic fade away extremely slowly.
Lament (Clanaan pt9)‘ is a quiet, but very short part of the chronicle.
Finally, ‘Sound To Light‘, also here fantastic twists and turns. The details are sublimely distributed over the headphones. The music is sometimes so intense, that it gets under your skin. There is a total harmony between keys and (bass)guitar, they sometimes melt together. Every now and then you can hear details on the cymbals in the distance. The spherical part lasts a little on the long side, then the tempo and volume are pushed up. This epic seems to die away, for a moment there is silence…then there is another small part of spherical music. How beautifully this is done!
There are similarities, because various elements from the two previous albums return. Yet they do not repeat themselves, because you hear several differences. The biggest difference is that ‘Stranger Than Fiction‘ has to grow because it is more complicated. Sometimes it sounds imposing, without being bombastic. Other moments are atmospheric. Both “disciplines” contain a lot of details. All songs have a fascinating structure. The lyrics are quite complicated, vocals and music are constantly in balance. The distribution over the headphones is super. Nth Ascension was already good, but has managed to improve again!
