Twintig jaar geleden richtten Doug Aldrich en Keith St John de viermans-rockband Burning Rain op. Hun vierde studioalbum ‘Face the Music’ is net uit. Ter ere hiervan touren de oprichters samen door Europa. De naam van deze akoestische tour is ‘Stripped & Naked’. Op 16 april stonden ze in De Bosuil, in Weert. Het gordijn voor het hoofdpodium was gesloten. Daarvoor was een kleiner podium gebouwd, zo konden de bezoekers gezellig in een halve cirkel om dit podium gaan staan. Op hun gemak namen Doug en Keith plaats op hun barkruk. Tijdens het stemmen van hun gitaar maakten ze grapjes, hierdoor werd er nog voor aanvang van het concert al gelachen.

Na zomaar een melodietje ging het concert van start met ‘Jumping Jack Flash’, natuurlijk een cover van The Stones. Er werd spontaan meegeklapt vanuit de zaal zodra de eerste noten gespeeld werden. De licht ruwe stem van Keith kwam goed tot zijn recht, bovendien vormden de samenzang van dit tweetal van een evenwichtige combinatie. Ook hun gitaarspel was in harmonie. Dit openingsnummer verliep ‘rockender’ dan verwacht voor een akoestisch show, Doug was daarvan de ‘schuldige‘. Hij zat achterovergeleund te rocken, en hield daarbij de hals van zijn gitaar in de lucht. Het publiek op de voorste rij was muisstil, dat viel op in het klein gespeelde deel naar het einde toe.

Face the music
Van dit nieuwe album speelden ze het eerste nummer: ‘Revolution’. Weer viel de powerstem van Keith op. Hij had de lead zang, maar hij werd met grote regelmaat vocaal bijgestaan door Doug. Ondanks dat dit tweetal zat, straalden ze volop energie en plezier uit. Er was geen sprake van rivaliteit tussen deze rockers, wel haalden ze het beste in elkaar naar boven. Ook ‘Midnight train’ komt van het nieuwe album. Keith schoof met zijn plectrum over de lengte langs de snaren en creëerde zo een apart geluid.
Van hun tweede album,’ Pleasure to burn’, kozen ze de ballad ‘Cherie don’t break my heart’. Keith bracht dit zó overtuigend dat je bijna zijn gebroken hart kon voelen. Beide mannen speelden dit klein, dit gaf deze ballad nog wat extra’s.

Tussen de nummers door werden er (muzikale) grapjes gemaakt. Tevens beloofden ze dat ze nogmaals naar De Bosuil zullen komen, maar dan samen met bassist Brad Lang en drummer Blas Elias. Dan zullen ze dus met de complete band Burning Rain op gaan treden!!
Omdat dit tweetal in diverse nummers stukjes improviseerden, maakten ze oogcontact met elkaar, zodat ze van elkaar wisten wie wat deed. Bovendien was er een leuke wisselwerking met het publiek, de sfeer was ronduit gezellig. Het leek alsof je met vrienden in een bruin café zat, dit werd versterkt door het sfeervolle licht.

Heaven gets me by
Het ‘Stones’ nummer ‘You can’t always get what you want’ begon klein. Onder leiding van Keith zongen de fans mee, hij dirigeerde het ‘Bosuil-koor’. Onder zijn leiding werd de zin ‘You can’t always get what you want’ een aantal keer herhaald. Ondertussen werd men begeleid door een vleugje gitaarspel van Doug. Onder aanmoediging van Keith werd er meerstemmig gezongen. Toch kon dit gelegenheidskoor bij lange na niet tippen aan de geweldige zang van Keith. Zijn solozang was helemaal subliem!
Tijdens een aantal nummers was het Doug die voor de rock zorgde. Hij had stevige stappers aan, toch wist hij moeiteloos zijn pedalboard te bedienen. Nergens gaf hij te veel gas. Want in ballads zoals ‘Heaven gets me by’ speelde Doug mooi ingetogen. Dit vormde samen met de gevoelig gezongen woorden van Keith een perfecte harmonie. Datzelfde gold ook voor ‘Forever more’. Beide ballads waren totaal in evenwicht, niet te zoet en niet te rockend.

Er werd nòg een beroemde cover gespeeld: ‘Stairway to heaven’. Keith liet de fans als eerste zingen, maar zonder hulp bleek dat niemand heel de tekst uit het hoofd wist. Zodra de bezoekers mee konden zingen met Keith wist men de woorden weer. Maar het lukte niet om zuiver te zingen, verre van dat. Dat droeg zelfs bij aan de warme, ingetogen en gezellige sfeer. Er heerste een sfeer alsof je met vrienden in een rustig, bruin café zat. In ‘Crying in the rain’ kreeg Doug alle gelegenheid om te laten horen dat hij ook tijdens deze kleine setting prima kon rocken. Dit tweetal hield zich zo nu en dan helemaal stil, zodat alleen de herhalende uitroep van het publiek ‘Crying in the rain’ te horen was.

If it’s love
De ballad ‘If it’s love’ komt ook van het nieuwe album, daar hoor je al dat deze ballad zich uitstekend leent voor een akoestische versie. Dat maakten Keith en Doug absoluut waar. Deze gevoelige ballad was de laatste van de avond, en misschien wel de beste ballad.
Met ‘Face the music’ keerde de rock terug. De titeltrack van het nieuwste album had dit tweetal voor het laatst bewaard. Keith zong even solo, weer waren de bezoekers onder de indruk van zijn stem. Zijn stem kwam in verschillende nummers onvoorstelbaar dichtbij die van Whitesnake zanger David Coverdale. Na bijna twee uur was dit gezellige concert ten einde. Doordat Doug en Keith na afloop zich een hele poos tussen de fans begaven, bleef de sfeer van een bruin café bewaard.

Attractive ‘Stripped & naked’ by Burning Rain in De Bosuil.

Twenty years ago, Doug Aldrich and Keith St John founded the four-man rock band Burning Rain. Their fourth studio album ‘Face the Music’ has just been released. With the encouragement of Keith there was polyphonic singing. Yet this occasional choir couldn’t match Keith’s great vocals by far. His solo vocals were absolutely sublime!
During a number of songs it was Doug who took care of the rock. He had solid steps on, yet he managed to operate his pedalboard effortlessly. Nowhere did he give too much throttle. Because in ballads like ‘Heaven gets me by’ Doug played beautifully subdued. This, together with Keith’s sensitively sung words, formed a perfect harmony. The same goes for ‘Forever more’. Both ballads were totally balanced, not too sweet and not too rocking.

Another famous cover was played: ‘Stairway to heaven‘. Keith had the fans sing first, but without any help it turned out that nobody knew all the lyrics by heart. As soon as the visitors could sing along with Keith, they knew the words again. But they didn’t succeed in singing cleanly, far from it. That even contributed to the warm, subdued and cosy atmosphere. There was an atmosphere as if you were sitting with friends in a quiet, brown café. In ‘Crying in the rain‘ Doug had every opportunity to show that he could rock during this small setting as well.
