Op zondagmiddag 1 september gaf de Nederlandse prog metalband Cirrha Niva een optreden in Willem Twee Podium in Den Bosch. Eerst mocht Roisin Dubh – Black Rose, een Thin Lizzy coverband, het publiek opwarmen. Frontman zanger/gitarist Maurice Ligbregts riep heel enthousiast: “Are you ready?” Dat is de titel van het eerste nummer dat ze speelden. Maurice had power genoeg op zijn stem, maar het was niet helemaal zuiver. Zingen, gitaarspelen en bewegen valt niet mee, waarschijnlijk speelde die combinatie hem wat parten. Want het leek soms of hij moeite had om zijn ademhaling juist te doseren.
In ‘Baby please don’t go’ liet Marcel Korsten een mooi staaltje gitaarwerk horen. De samenzang verliep niet helemaal gesmeerd. De uithaal van Maurice klonk wel goed!
Dit is muziek om het publiek uit het dak te laten gaan, dat gebeurde helaas niet. Er miste wat interactie met het publiek tijdens de nummers. De manier van spelen en performen was niet vlammend genoeg.

Het uptempo intro van ‘Suicide’ werd strak gespeeld. Drummer Johan Sars zat half verstopt achter zijn cimbalen, maar hij was duidelijk hoorbaar.
Bassist Dave Kops speelde gedreven. Er was op zich voldoende interactie tussen de bandleden onderling. Toch kwam de energie die ze wel in zich hebben, niet geheel tot bloei. Al met al was dit een lekker opwarmertje voor Cirrha Niva. Aan de hoeveelheid band T-shirts te zien, waren veel mensen voor hen gekomen.

Cirrha Niva

Het optreden startte met de beamer. De band kwam in het donker op, en begon met ‘Afraid to bleed’ te spelen, van hun album ‘Out Of The Freak Show (OOTFS) uit 2016’. Zanger Legrand toonde veel expressie in zijn manier van performen, het was zelfs licht excentriek. Niet alleen onderstreepte hij de vocale delen met zijn expressie, ook tijdens de instrumentale delen liet hij zien dat hij de muziek voelde en beleefde. Legrand trok de aandacht naar zich toe. Dat deed hij niet met opzet, dat ging
vanzelf.

Hij was één brok passie en toonde lef met zijn theatrale stijl van bewegen. Regelmatig liet hij flinke vocale uithalen horen. De eerlijkheid gebiedt wel te zeggen dat ze niet allemaal loepzuiver waren, toch wist hij het publiek te overtuigen.
De beamer had een toegevoegde waarde. Tijdens ‘From Ego’ waren er beelden van het OOTFS- artwork te zien. Het gitaarspel van Rob Willemse was super. Maar ook gitarist Richard van de Linden verdient een groot compliment. Aan niks was te merken dat dit pas zijn tweede optreden was met Cirrha Niva, terwijl de nummers toch ingewikkeld in elkaar zitten.

For Moments Never Done

Dit jaar viert Cirrha Niva het tienjarig bestaan van hun album ‘For Moments Never Done’. Daarom brengen ze op 13 september prachtig gelimiteerd vinyl uit.
Van dit album werd onder andere ‘Framed’ gespeeld. Het ritme aan het begin werd strak en krachtig gedrumd door Robert van Kooij. In het rustige stuk liet hij zijn stokken even met rust, maar zodra het weer kon, ging hij vol gas verder.
Het gitaarspel van de mannen was weer fantastisch, maar ook bassist Michel Steenbekkers speelde mooie partijen weg. Legrand liet enkele goed geplaatste mooie schreeuwen horen.
Er gebeurde zoveel op het podium, dat je ogen te kort kwam. De mannen gingen regelmatig naast of tegenover elkaar spelen. De vonken vlogen ervan af, er was niet alleen veel energie, ook de passie was voelbaar.

The fooling

De mannen stonden duidelijk met veel plezier te spelen. Maar ze waren wel serieus op de momenten dat het moest. Zo ook in ‘The Fooling’, een nummer dat over kindermishandeling gaat. Via de beamer is de tekst van de telefonische noodoproep te lezen, via sampling is het op de achtergrond te horen. Live gespeeld voelt dit anders dan op de cd. Maar ook dit maakte indruk, Legrand gooide de frustratie eruit. De sampling van het telefoongesprek in het rustige gespeelde deel is goed getimed.
‘Silver Tongues’ is een favoriet nummer van Legrand. Rob stond licht achterovergebogen met zijn hoofd in zijn nek te spelen. Dit gave nummer ging non-stop over naar ‘Just Another Legacy’. Een deel wordt gespeeld zonder dat de bas van Michel te horen is. Als backing vocal zong/sprak hij de kenmerkende woorden van dit nummer “‘Tick-tock Tick-tock”. Later had ook Rob een deel van de backing vocals. De tijd tikte mee op de beamer. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk waren hier positieve quotes op te lezen. Het einde werd voor dit liveoptreden langer gerekt.

Abraham

Het optreden leek afgelopen, maar er was een verrassing voor Rob, hij werd in het zonnetje gezet omdat hij een paar dagen geleden 50 was geworden. Op commando van Legrand zong het publiek hem toe. Op de beamer werden oude foto’s van Rob getoond.
Ondertussen waren de bandleden van Roisin Dubh – Black Rose weer op het podium verschenen. Met zijn allen speelden ze Thin Lizzy’s ‘Jailbreak’, op de bühne werd een feestje gebouwd. Toen Cirrha Niva het podium had verlaten speelde Roisin Dubh – Black Rose als laatste ‘The Boys Are Back in Town’. Nu speelden ze wel met de energie die bij hun act deels ontbrak. Cirrha Niva brought down the house

For Moments Never Done

This year Cirrha Niva celebrates the tenth anniversary of their album ‘For Moments Never Done‘. That’s why they’re releasing beautiful limited edition vinyl on September 13th.
From this album ‘Framed‘ was played. The rhythm at the beginning was tightly and powerfully drummed by Robert van Kooij. In the quiet piece he left his sticks unattended for a while, but as soon as it was possible to do it again, he continued at full speed.
The guitar playing of the men was fantastic again, but bass player Michel Steenbekkers also played nice parts. Legrand showed some well placed beautiful shouts.
There was so much happening on stage, that you could not see it all. The men regularly went to play next to or opposite each other. They caused a stir, there was not only a lot of energy, but also the passion was palpable.

The fooling

The men were clearly having a lot of fun on stage. But they were serious when they had to. This was also the case during ”The Fooling”, a song about child abuse. The text of the telephone emergency call can be read via the beamer, while it can be heard in the background via sampling. Played live, this feels different than on the CD. But this also was impressive, Legrand threw out the frustration. The sampling of the telephone conversation in the quietly played part is well timed.
Silver Tongues‘ is a favourite song of Legrand. Rob stood slightly bent backwards playing with his head in his neck. This cool song went non-stop to ‘Just Another Legacy’. A part is played without hearing Michel’s bass. As a backing vocal he sang/speaked the characteristic words of this song “‘Tick-tock Tick-tock“. Later Rob also had a part of the backing vocals. Time was ticking on the beamer. During an instrumental piece you could read positive quotes. The end was extended for this live performance.

Half-century

The gig seemed to be finished, but there was a surprise for Rob, he was put in the limelight because he turned 50 a few days ago. On command of Legrand the audience sang to him. On the beamer old pictures of Rob were shown.
Meanwhile the band members of Roisin Dubh – Black Rose had reappeared on stage. Together they played Thin Lizzy’s ‘Jailbreak‘, a party was built on stage. When Cirrha Niva left the stage, Roisin Dubh – Black Rose played the last ‘The Boys Are Back in Town‘. Now they played with the energy that was partly lacking in their act. So a fantastic concert ended in a special way. Rob celebrated his birthday together with his fans with tasty snacks and a drink.
