‘Astralium’ (2014) is een symfonische metalband uit Italië. Ze laten zich niet alleen beïnvloeden door bands als Dream Theater en Symphony X. Maar ook door Epica, Nightwish en Within Temptation. ‘Land Of Eternal Dreams‘ is hun debuutalbum.

‘Remembrance’ heeft een tedere start, het geluid is glashelder. Klassieke muziek wordt gecombineerd met klassiek georiënteerde koorzang, dit heeft filmische allure.
In ‘The Journey’ blijft het klassieke bestaan, maar de metal komt erbij. Roberta Pappalardo heeft een heldere, krachtige stem. De metal en klassiek zijn in balans, de wendingen hiertussen verlopen soepel. De vocale uithaal van Roberta vlak voor het einde is super!

‘Rising Waves From The Ocean’ heeft een pakkend ritme. Het geheel is toegankelijk en opzwepend, de bas is goed hoorbaar. De drumvellen zijn vrij strak gespannen, hier past het bij het ritme, dat met vlagen flink hoog ligt. Tommy Johansson (Sabaton en Majestica) neemt ook een stukje van de zang op zich, zijn krachtige stem smelt mooi samen met de muziek.

Astralium’s drummer Salvo Grasso zingt in ‘My Life Is My Eternity’. Ook zijn mooie stem combineert prima bij die van Roberta. Als het tempo daalt, blijft het slagwerk aanwezig, nu heeft dit een warmere klank. De klassieke koorzang is staccato, en is harmonie met de muziek. Salvo zingt korte tijd bijna solo, weer komt zijn stem prachtig uit.

In ‘Whisper In The Silence’ merk ik dat het verrassende effect wat minder wordt. Want het verschil tussen de nummers onderling is aan de kleine kant.
Het pianospel van Salvo klinkt samen met de ‘strijkers’. Dit is net te kort om echt impact te hebben. De heerlijke gitaarsolo komt van Andrea Martongelli (Andy Artemis).

In de opzwepende nummers die volgen blijft de balans tussen metal en klassiek bestaan. De manier waarop de wendingen verlopen is vrij voorspelbaar. Daardoor zitten er te weinig gave elementen in de toegankelijke nummers. En als ze erin zitten, zijn ze regelmatig te snel voorbij. Er is niks mis met details in de muziek, maar sommige dingen mogen meer ‘in de spotlights staan’. Zo zijn de gave grunts van Davide Bruno in ‘A Dream’s Elegy’ te snel voorbij. Ook de sampling van het krakende geluid van een oud schip in ‘Seven Seas, Seven Winds’ is voorbij voordat je het weet. De opbouw naar de metal is niet zo origineel. De enkele grunts van Adam Cook vallen perfect samen met de muziek.

Het intro van ‘Ethereal Voices From The Forest’ is anders dan de andere. De sfeer is dromerig, de woordeloze zang is prachtig helder, en kruipt onder mijn huid. Dit loopt over naar ‘The World of Unknown’. Tempo en volume nemen langzaam toe, dit is boeiender qua opbouw. Maar het vervolg heeft wel overeenkomsten met de voorgaande nummers. ‘Hope Is Gone (Orchestral Version)’ heeft een verrassende, klein gespeelde start. Weer is er even de filmische allure. De wendingen vloeien in elkaar over, de metal blijft weg. Dit laatste nummer wordt te vroeg afgekapt.

De balans tussen klassiek en metal is goed qua hoeveelheid en volume. De manier waarop het geheel samengesteld is, had afwisselender gekund.
Met het talent wat ze hebben laten horen, had er volgens mij meer ingezeten. De fundering is goed, de finishing touch is niet compleet, waardoor ik niet intens geraakt word. Door de hoogwaardige geluidskwaliteit komen de laagjes zeer goed tot zijn recht. Als ‘Astralium’ met een volgend album de opbouw verfijnt, komen ze heel dicht bij perfectie. Toch is ‘Land Of Eternal Dreams’ een goed debuutalbum!
