Vigier’s Summer Storm is een nieuw muziekproject van Patrice Vigier. Hij is een innovatieve gitaarbouwer. Hierdoor heeft hij diverse prijzen en titels behaald, zoals ‘gitaar van het jaar’. Met Summer Storm speelt hij prog rock, classic en soms wat hardrock. Thuisbasis van Summer Storm is Parijs. Dit eerste album heet heel toepasselijk ‘First’.
‘Introduction’ heeft rockende en uptempo start. De snaren hebben in eerste instantie de meeste invloed. Natuurlijk is Patrice de gitarist. Pascal Mulot laat zich op de bas horen.
Ik tap vrijwel direct mee op het opzwepende ritme. De melodie is heerlijk en ondertussen hoor je lekker drumwerk van Aurelien Ouzoulias.
Het tempo in de muziek blijft behoorlijk hoog. Er is een mooie, korte opbouw naar het einde.
Het geluid van de regen klinkt samen met mysterieuze muziek. De titeltrack heeft mooi, spannend intro. Langzaam maakt het mysterieuze plaats voor rock. Er lijken af en toe invloeden te zijn van Kiss. Er zit een lichte echo op de zang. De rockende stem van Renaud Hantson heeft een aangenaam ruw randje. Hij laat een flinke rauwe uithaal horen. Zijn stem klinkt hier rokerig en doorleefd, in de goede zin van het woord. Zang en muziek zijn in balans. De tekst is niet zo origineel, maar Renaud brengt het vol overtuiging.
‘Little By Little’ en ‘Whoever You Are’ hebben beide een boeiende start. Dan neemt de classic rock op een voorspelbare manier toe. Toch is het heerlijk om cd lekker hard door de speakers te laten knallen. Al is het onderlinge verschil tussen de tracks aan de kleine kant. Het voordeel is dat je de teksten na een paar keer luisteren al voor een deel mee kunt zingen. Dat meezingen lukt ook in ‘Natural Born Lover’ dat deels in het Frans en deels in het Engels gezongen is. ‘Free days’ heeft een heerlijk rustige start. Reanud zingt klein, en het ruwe randje blijft. De backing vocals worden vrij voorspelbaar toegevoegd. De hoeveelheid is toch goed gekozen. Het basloopje is gaaf. Tempo en volume nemen zo nu en dan toe, de zang sluit daar constant bij aan. Qua dat zit alles goed in elkaar.
Na een boeiend intro is het vervolg van ‘Life Is Too Short’ vrij voorspelbaar. Bovendien zijn er vrij veel herhalingen in deze track. Het einde is een beetje vreemd afgekapt.
Hoewel de opbouw naar de rock in ‘Extroduction’ wat langer op zich laat wachten, is de voorspelbaarheid terug op sommige vlakken. Maar het rockt allemaal heerlijk. Het einde is weer prima. Na een vrij lange stilte komt de bonus track, Dit is een instrumentale versie van ‘Free Days’ en ook deze track mag er zijn!
Deze tien nummers duren nog geen drie kwartier. Er is een goede balans tussen de instrumenten onderling en tussen zang en muziek. Zo nu en dan heeft Renaud ’s stem raakvlakken met de stem Bon Jovi.
De tracks neigen meer naar de classic rock, dan naar de prog rock. Her en der mis ik wat diepgang van de prog rock. In een aantal tracks is de classis/hard rock wat voorspelbaar. Toch zitten er in ieder nummer, met name in ‘G. V.’ fantastische stukken. De gespeelde rusten geven daar wat extra’s. Summer Storm weet duidelijk wat rocken is. ’First’ is een heerlijk album om lekker luid uit je speakers te laten denderen.

These ten songs last less than three quarters of an hour. There is a good balance between the instruments and between vocals and music. Every now and then Renaud ’s voice has common ground with the Bon Jovi voice.
The tracks tend more towards classic rock, than towards prog rock. Here and there I miss some depth of prog rock. In some tracks the classis/hard rock is a bit predictable. Yet there are in every song, especially in ‘G. V.‘ fantastic pieces. The played rests give some extra’s. Summer Storm clearly knows what rocking is. ‘First‘ is a great album that deserves to play loud.
