Methexis is een instrumentaal progressief rock project van de Griekse multi-instrumentalist Nikitas Kissonas (ex Verbal Delirium en Yianneis). Dit project bestaat sinds 2011. De muziek is door Nikitas geschreven. ‘Topos’ is het derde album dat uitgebracht is. Voor het eerst is het ook op vinyl verkrijgbaar.
‘Topos 1’ heeft een hele zachte en voorzichtige start. De muziek klinkt ver weg. Een paar seconden later luidt orgelspel een wending in naar wat heavy rock. Vrijwel direct rol je van de ene wending in de andere. Er komt veel op je af. Zoals lekkere basloopjes, prima drumwerk waarbij de cimbalen zo nu en dan zachtjes bespeeld worden. Tempo en volume wisselen constant. Ook is er ‘constante’ wisseling tussen de diverse instrumenten. Toetsen en fluiten komen regelmatig aan bod. Je hoort zelfs een trompet. Deze geeft samen met de pianoklanken die er doorheen dwarrelen een jazzy sfeer.
Niet alleen de instrumenten wisselen snel, ook de muziekstijl en de sfeer slaan soms vlug om. Ondanks al deze veranderingen in stijl, sfeer en niet te vergeten in tempo en volume, blijft de balans bewaard. Na bijna 7 minuten lijkt dit nummer te eindigen. Maar het is een sublieme wending. Nu volgt er een fantastisch experimenteel deel. Dit is deels klassiek georiënteerd. Het geluid van ‘strijkers’ en ‘pauken’ is erin verweven.
Er is eigenlijk te veel om op te noemen. Verbazingwekkend is hier op zijn plaats. Dit zit zo knap in elkaar!
Even is er een kort onrustig stukje, dat op de grens zit van wel of niet te veel. En toch, ook dit past in het geheel. Het trompetspel is prachtig helder. Je voelt op een gegeven moment dat de opbouw naar het einde is ingezet. Toch eindigt deze epic na 19.30 minuten nog vrij onverwacht.
‘Topos 2’ heeft een langzame, vrij sombere start. Het gitaarspel wat erbij komt zorgt voor melancholie. Dit is een geheel andere track. Hier zijn de veranderingen (in eerste instantie) minder vaak en minder plotseling. Toch blijft ook deze track boeien. Zeker als de muziek experimenteel van aard wordt. Diverse akoestische gitaren geven even een vrolijkere sound. Ook hier zijn er fantastische transities in de muziek. Soms onverwacht. Op andere momenten vloeien de veranderingen in elkaar over. Tempo en volume worden flink opgeschroefd. Vervolgens keren de jazzy elementen op het einde terug. Kortom, ook hier gebeurt er van alles.
Deze cd telt slechts twee nummers. De laatste tikt bijna 21 minuten aan. In beide tracks weet je eerst niet of de track gaat eindigen of er een wending is. De geluidskwaliteit is goed. Ondanks het aantal laagjes is er een prima evenwicht tussen de instrumenten onderling. Dit is 40 minuten instrumentale top prog om intens naar te luisteren.

Topos 1‘ has a very soft and cautious start. The music sounds far away. A few seconds later organ playing heralds a turn to some heavy rock. Almost immediately you roll from one turn in the other. A lot comes at you. Like nice bass runs, fine drums where the cymbals are occasionally played softly. Tempo and volume change constantly. There is also a ‘constant’ change between the various instruments. Keys and flutes are regularly played. You can even hear a trumpet. Together with the piano sounds that flutter through it, this gives a jazzy atmosphere.
Not only the instruments change quickly, also the music style and the atmosphere sometimes change quickly. Despite all these changes in style, atmosphere and not to forget in tempo and volume, the balance is maintained. After almost 7 minutes this song seems to end. But it is a sublime twist. Now follows a fantastic experimental part. This is partly classically oriented. The sound of ‘strings’ and ’timpani’ is interwoven in it.
There is actually too much to mention. Amazing is in place here. This is so cleverly put together!
For a moment there is a short restless piece, which is on the border of whether or not too much. And yet, this also fits into the whole. The trumpet play is beautifully clear. At a certain moment you feel that the build-up to the end is started. Still this epic ends after 19.30 minutes quite unexpectedly.
Topos 2‘ has a slow, rather sombre start. The guitar playing that comes with it makes for melancholy. This is a completely different track. Here the changes (at first) are less frequent and less sudden. Yet this track also remains fascinating. Especially when the music becomes experimental in nature. Several acoustic guitars give a more cheerful sound. Also here there are fantastic transitions in the music. Sometimes unexpected. At other times the changes flow into each other. Pace and volume are increased considerably. Then the jazzy elements return at the end. In short, here too a lot of things happen.
This CD has only two songs. The last one taps for almost 21 minutes. In both tracks you first don’t know if the track will end or there is a turn. The sound quality is good. Despite the number of layers there is a fine balance between the instruments. This is 40 minutes instrumental top prog to listen to intensely.
