Light Damage – Numbers

Dit loopt nonstop over naar ‘From Minor to Sailor’.

Light Damage is a prog rock band with members from France, Belgium and Luxembourg. The home base is Luxembourg. Part of the inspiration for the band name comes from the combination of Electric Light Orchestra and Pink Floyd’s song Brain Damage. Their debut album was launched three years ago and was well received. The new album is called Numbers, or #. The hashtag with a song is used in film scenarios for an actor with a supporting role, who has text but no name. The tracks of this new album tell a story of a person, or personality. You get a glimpse into someone’s life, as it were. The band members like to point out that we should remember that we are not a song ourselves.

Run‘ has an instrumental intro. This is quite quiet in the beginning, but tempo and volume increase quite quickly. The first word is “RUN“, and is kept long. Lead singer Nicholas-John Dewez has his own voice. Here he is supplemented vocally by guest singer Marilyn Placek. Their voices colour nicely together. In the text you hear 26 miles and number 261 on the chest, this indicates a marathon. Yet the text makes you think.

After a mysterious start, ‘Bloomed‘ eventually becomes a bit restless. This beautiful, instrumental track is mysterious and calm in the end.
This runs nonstop over to ‘From Minor to Sailor‘. Because of the extensive, subdued instrumental intro you notice that this track is going to tell a story. It is about a man who really existed. As a child he wanted to sail, and luckily he was able to make his dream come true before he died. The voice of Nicholas-John comes out beautifully in the softly sung part. Some words have a French accent. This is especially evident in the longer words. Sometimes he puts the emphasis remarkably, he is therefore a bit difficult to understand.
Again there is the vocal support of Marilyn. Parts of the text are spoken instead of sung. This is nicely done. The good drumming is especially noticeable in the instrumental piece. The keys whirl nicely through it. Every now and then this track contains a lot of layers and is strongly constructed. Moreover, there is a good balance between the keys and the strings. The little piece played is cool. This consists of spherical sounds and short piano playing, and suddenly continues rocking. The guitar skills are compelling and give me goose bumps. I enjoy the many twists and turns. Then one instrument is pushed forward, then another instrument is pushed forward. A little later the vocals are in the foreground. The “Ooohoo” (of several vocals) fits here very well. The flute playing at the end is fantastic and forms the way to a beautiful fading end.
Little Dark One‘ and ‘Phantom Twin‘ are also great tracks. In ‘Little Dark One‘ the strings are especially positive. Again there is a good balance, also between the high and low tones. The lyrics contain no clichés. Some sentences can be interpreted in several ways. The sixth and last track is an instrumental track. A nice ending to a good CD. ‘Numbers‘ is not only available on CD or digital, but also on vinyl. The sound quality is generally good, although there are some extras added here and there which is slightly less. Because of the changes in the music, it takes a while before you know the tracks. That is of course not a reproach. Because every time I enjoy the same beautiful moments.
