De line up van de Griekse band OH is kort. Want deze bestaat slechts uit één persoon. Dit is Olivia Hadjiioannou. Omdat haar achternaam nogal moeilijk uit te spreken is, noemt ze zichzelf kortweg OH. Olivia is een multi-instrumentalist, songwriter en sound producer. Ze lanceerde haar debuut prog rock EP ‘Sleeping World’ in 2013. Haar nieuwste album heet Metallia. Hierop staan zes instrumentale nummers, waarbij haar stem vooral als instrument wordt ingezet.
‘Red Lion’ is het eerste nummer. Dit start met een hoog en helder met “Yeahhh, Yeahhh”. Vrij snel komen de metal elementen om de hoek kijken. Toch zitten er ook lichtere elementen in verweven zoals percussie (op de touberleki). De bas is lekker aanwezig, maar de gitaren scheuren er zo nu flink door heen. De hoge, vocale uithalen van Olivia zijn als instrument toegevoegd. Dit bestaat meestal slecht een enkele klank en smelt voor een groot deel samen met de muziek. Hoewel ze flinke power heeft op haar stem, wordt het deels overstemd door de muziek. De violen komen niet helemaal goed tot hun recht. De balans tussen alle instrumenten is er dus niet altijd.
Bij het intro van ‘Bee’ hoor je duidelijk Griekse invloeden. Het geluid komt even wat dof over. Dat is jammer van het akoestisch gitaarspel. Dit wordt nu te ver naar de achtergrond gedrukt. De basis van het nummer is wel degelijk interessant. Al hadden er wel meer tempo volumeverschillen in mogen zitten. De hoeveelheid van verschillende geluiden en instrumenten doet vrij massief aan. Door enkele nuanceverschillen in te bouwen, had het minder onrustig geklonken. En was het gave gitaarspel beter naar voren gekomen. Vlak voor het einde is er een gave wending.
‘Androgyny’ start met a capella zang. Deze heeft een licht klassieke ondertoon en zorgt voor een verrassing. De manier waarom de metal erbij komt, is voorspellend. Door het ritme, de melodie, en de herhalingen, blijft dit al gauw in je hoofd hangen. De lage tonen zijn aangenaam vet aangezet. De snaren klinken lekker groezelig. Hoewel de basis goed is, word ik niet omvergeblazen. Ook niet in de nummers die volgen. Dat komt deels omdat Olivia haar stem regelmatig op dezelfde manier gebruikt, dit smelt vaak samen met de muziek. Als ze meer variatie in toonhoogte en/of volume had laten horen was haar stem zeker indrukwekkend geweest. Met name als deze op de voorgrond had geklonken. Want ze heeft veel power in haar prachtige stem.
Een aantal elementen in de muziek keren van tijd tot tijd voor een gedeelte terug in de muziek. Dit kan voor eenheid zorgen. Maar het kan ook het gemis aan variatie geven. Dat is hier een beetje het geval. De violen zijn soms zo ver op de achtergrond dat ze bijna weg vallen. Ik mis het op de voorgrond treden van diverse instrumenten, die details hadden voor diepgang kunnen zorgen. Al het kunnen wat Olivia in huis heeft komt niet helemaal tot uiting. Ze doet zichzelf hiermee een beetje te kort. Maar petje af voor haar kunnen, want ze heeft alles zelf ingespeeld en gezongen. En dat heeft ze zeker niet slecht gedaan!

By building in some differences in nuance, it would have sounded less restless. And the cool guitar playing would have come out better. Just before the end there is a cool turn.
‘Androgyny‘ starts with a capella vocals. This one has a light classical undertone and provides a surprise. The way why metal is added is predictive. Because of the rhythm, the melody, and the repeats, this soon gets stuck in your head. The low tones are pleasantly bold. The strings sound nice and dingy. Although the basis is good, I am not blown over. Also not in the songs that follow. This is partly because Olivia uses her voice regularly in the same way, this often merges with the music. If she would have let more variation in pitch and/or volume be heard her voice would certainly have been impressive. Especially if it had sounded in the foreground. Because she has a lot of power in her beautiful voice.
A number of elements in the music return from time to time for a part in the music. This can create unity. But it can also give the lack of variation. That is a bit the case here. The violins are sometimes so far in the background that they almost fall away. I miss the coming to the foreground of various instruments, which could have given details for depth. Everything Olivia has to offer is not fully expressed. She does herself a bit too short with this. But I’d like to take a hat off for her ability, because she has played and sung everything herself. And she has certainly not done that badly!
