‘At The Edge Of Light’ is alweer het 26e studio album van prog meester Steve Hackett. Ik hoef hem niet meer te introduceren, dus duw ik meteen op play.
Aan de lichte melodie van ‘Fallen Walls And Pedestal’ hoor je duidelijk de Steve Hackett stijl, het lijkt op Wolflight. Zowel in de rockende, als de rustige delen zijn er heel wat laagjes. Deze instrumentale openingstrack sterft mooi weg.
Bij aanvang van ‘Beasts In Our Time’ hoor je diverse laagjes. Gevolgd door akoestische gitaar en zang, Steve’s warme stem komt hier goed tot zijn recht. De wending naar meer volume is een beetje voorspelbaar, maar dat is niet erg, want het instrumentale stuk is weer super. Een aantal wendingen zijn mede door de wisseling van instrumenten onverwachter, andere wendingen vloeien in elkaar over. Er zijn talloze details in verweven, de één is nog mooier dan de andere. Je wordt constant getriggerd om intens te luisteren. Daarnaast wordt er gespeeld met de verdeling in de koptelefoon. De opbouw naar het einde is licht chaotisch en wellicht wat merkwaardig, toch is het nergens te veel van het goede.
Het eerste deel van ‘Under The Eye Of The Sun’ doet vrolijk aan. De meerdere stemmen zijn prima gestapeld. De wendingen en details zetten je oren op scherp. Het lage, trillende geluid zal vast van de didgeridoo komen, maar dat is niet het enige bijzondere geluid. Door het grote scala aan instrumenten en geluiden is het bijna onmogelijk om exact te achterhalen welk geluid van welk instrument komt. Bovendien loopt het één soms zo subtiel over in het ander, dat je bijna niet kunt ontdekken wanneer het ene instrument/geluid ophoudt en waar het andere begint. Op andere momenten zijn de transities sneller. De muziek krijgt, met name door het gitaarspel, een licht rockend karakter. Ook dit geweldig opgebouwd nummer eindigt prachtig.
De klassieke elementen die in ‘Those Golden Wings’ verweven zitten, worden mooi afgewisseld met licht rockende en/of akoestische delen. Deze epic is een lust voor het oor. In ‘Shadow And Flame’ zitten volop Arabische invloeden. ‘Hungry Years’ is door de zang best wel zoet. Het ritme is vrij standaard, het gitaarspel is boeiender. In verhouding tot de voorgaande nummers valt deze een beetje tegen.
Het intro van ‘Descent’ weet me te pleasen. Het slagwerk is staccato en vormt een mooi contrast met de langzame muziek. Dit instrumentale nummer eindigt klein. En loopt over in ‘Conflict’. Rockende elementen en klassiek georiënteerde muziek lopen ‘door elkaar heen’, of wisselen elkaar af. Na een rockend deel dooft de klassieke muziek langzaam. Na twee instrumentale nummers volgt ‘Peace’. Dit derde nummer van deze trilogie is vocaal. De koorzang is een paar keer zeer kort toegevoegd, maar trekt daardoor wel extra aandacht. Ook dit laatste nummer is geniaal opgebouwd.
In bijna alle nummers zijn er veel wendingen en instrumentenwissels, maar alles blijft in harmonie. Zowel de koorzang, als de stemmen van Amanda Lehmann en Durga en Lorelei McBroom zijn een fantastische toevoeging. Door de grote hoeveelheid laagjes, en de bijzondere (folklore) instrumenten hoor je steeds weer nieuwe dingen. Sommige nummers zoals ‘Those Golden Wings’ worden langzaam, maar respectvol weggedraaid. De meeste nummers hebben een mooi gecomponeerd einde. Steve heeft duidelijk zijn stempel op diverse nummers gedrukt. Toch krijg ik nergens het gevoel dat hij op safe gespeeld heeft, het is geen kopie van eerdere successen. De geluidkwaliteit is zoals altijd super. Al dit moois komt hierdoor perfect tot zijn recht, en bezorgt me regelmatig kippenvel. Kortom ‘At The Edge Of Light’ is een zeer goed album.

At The Edge Of Light‘ is already the 26th studio album of prog master Steve Hackett. I don’t have to introduce him anymore, so I immediately push on play.
The light melody of ‘Fallen Walls And Pedestal’ clearly shows the Steve Hackett style, it looks like Wolflight. Both in the rocking and the quiet parts there are a lot of layers. This instrumental openingstrack dies away nicely.
At the start of ‘Beasts In Our Time‘ you can hear several layers. Followed by acoustic guitar and vocals, Steve’s warm voice comes into its own here. The turn to more volume is a bit predictable, but that’s not bad, because the instrumental part is super again. Some turns are unexpected, partly due to the change of instruments, other turns flow into each other. There are countless details interwoven in it, one is even more beautiful than the other. You are constantly triggered to listen intensely. In addition, the division in the headphones is played. The construction towards the end is slightly chaotic and perhaps a bit peculiar, yet nowhere is it too much of a good thing.
The first part of ‘Under The Eye Of The Sun‘ looks cheerful. The multiple voices are well stacked. The twists and details sharpen your ears. The low, vibrating sound will probably come from the didgeridoo, but that’s not the only special sound. Because of the large range of instruments and sounds it is almost impossible to find out exactly which sound comes from which instrument. Moreover, sometimes the one is so subtle that you can hardly discover when one instrument/sound stops and where the other starts. At other times the transitions are faster. The music gets, especially through the guitar playing, a slightly rocking character. Also this great built up song ends beautifully.
The classical elements that are interwoven in ‘Those Golden Wings‘, are nicely interspersed with light rocking and/or acoustic parts. This epic is a feast for the ear. In ‘Shadow And Flame‘ there are plenty of Arab influences. Hungry Years’ is quite sweet because of the vocals. The rhythm is quite standard, the guitar playing is more interesting. In relation to the previous songs this one is a bit disappointing.
The intro of ‘Descent‘ pleases me. The percussion is staccato and forms a nice contrast with the slow music. This instrumental song ends small. And turns into ‘Conflict‘. Rocking elements and classically oriented music run ‘through each other‘, or alternately. After a rocking part, classical music slowly goes out. Two instrumental songs are followed by ‘Peace‘. This third song of this trilogy is vocal. The choir vocals are added a few times very short, but attracts extra attention. This last song is also ingeniously constructed.
In almost all songs there are many turns and instrument changes, but everything remains in harmony. Both the choirs, as well as the voices of Amanda Lehmann and Durga and Lorelei McBroom are a fantastic addition. Because of the large amount of layers, and the special (folklore) instruments you hear new things over and over again. Some songs like ‘Those Golden Wings’ are played slowly, but respectfully. Most songs have a nicely composed ending. Steve has clearly left his mark on several songs. Yet I don’t get the feeling that he played on safe anywhere, it’s not a copy of previous successes. The sound quality is as always super. All this beauty comes into its own, and gives me goose bumps regularly. In short ‘At The Edge Of Light‘ is a very good album.
