Praying Mantis speelde met volle bak power in De Bosuil.

Menig rockliefhebber kent Praying Mantis natuurlijk.

You really got me

John’s zang was weer dik in orde.

Gravity
‘Cry for a new world’ was een goede aanloop voor de akoestische nummers. Men begon met ‘Turn the tide’.

Children of the earth

Many a rock lover knows Praying Mantis of course. The band was founded in 1973 by brothers Chris and Tino Troy. At the time they were one of the most influential bands of the NWOBHM, in full: New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. This metal movement came into being when the punk movement collapsed. Praying Mantis is not a completely English band, because since 2013 Hans In ’t Zandt is the drummer and John ‘Jaycee’ Cuijpers the frontman. These two Dutch rockers play in a large number of rock/metal bands.
Actually, the Dutch classic rock band Terra Nova would open this evening, this to promote their album ‘Raise your voice, which was released about a month ago. Unfortunately frontman Fred Hendrix was struck by the flu. The replacement support act was Van Hagar, a Van Halen tribute band. A logical choice, because John is frontman of this too. Hans is drummer of Terra Nova, so he was supposed to play two sets. That’s why he took over the baton from Patrick Eijdems, Van Hagar’s drummer.

From Hagar
There was a scarf tied to the microphone stand, of course with the American flag. Four of the five band members appeared on stage, Ron Hendrix played mysterious tones from his keyboard, Coen Pots played a nice groove. It was the intro for ‘Runnin‘ with the devil’. Just before John had to start singing, he appeared. The first high vocal outburst was immediately touching, seemingly effortlessly he got all the high notes, moreover he easily surpassed the music. He used the microphone stand as an attribute in his performance.

You really got me
In ‘Amsterdam‘ John had a hard time getting above the music. But he remained mobile and charismatic as always. He showed not only physical, but also facial expression. It was clear that he gave himself completely again. There was plenty of interaction between the band members. Van Hagar was clearly enjoying himself on stage. Hot for teacher‘ started with a drum solo by Hans. This was put in the flashy light by the light man of De Bosuil . Gesuino Derosas had the same guitar as David Lee Roth. During ‘Eruption‘ Gesuino played solos, he stood at the edge of the stage, and played with both hands on the neck of the guitar. This was followed by hits like ‘You really got me‘, the chorus was sung along by the audience. As expected ‘Jump’ was the last song. Coen was the one who jumped several times.

Praying Mantis
Also this time frontman John was the last to enter the stage, his first word was:

“BOSUUIIL!

Then he sang the first sentences of ‘Captured City‘. John’s singing was fine again. Tino Troy was as lively as before, he jumped and moved like a twenty year old. His brother bassist Chris was also quite agile. Because of this agility and the interaction between the band members, the fans were short of eyes. Guitarist Andy Burgess was a bit quieter, but he was also radiant with pleasure.
They spontaneously clapped along at the start of the old ‘Praying Mantis’ (1980). Here four rockers were playing with a big smile in a row. The harmony vocals in ‘Panic in the streets‘ were not flawless everywhere. That was amply compensated in ‘Highway‘, here the blend of the five voices was very good. During ‘Keep it Alive‘ there were technical problems with Troy, there was an annoying beep through the hall. He didn’t get it solved immediately, and looked ‘apologetic’, but ‘the show must go on‘, and that happened.

Gravity
The latest album, ‘Gravity‘, was also played by ‘Mantis Anthem’. Troy was full of energy and went crazy at times. John sang clearly, the chorus was almost word for word. Again John showed a power story that you say ‘U’ to. Cry for a new world’ was a good run-up for the acoustic songs. They started with ‘Turn the tide’. Some ‘fans’ didn’t have the politeness to stop their conversation. The real fans sang along gently and respectfully. The band’s singing together was sublime, the fans couldn’t say that, oh well that was part of it. Afterwards they played ‘Simple man‘ by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Hans used brushes during these songs.

Children of the earth
With ‘Fight for your honour‘, the gas went up again, which applied to both the music and the performance. The energy of the band members continued to exist. Every now and then John pepped down to take a look at the lyrics. Very understandable, because he sings in maybe ten bands. His cheating was so minimal that it hardly stood out, screech! Dream on‘ was a bit more subdued, this made for a varied setlist. Of course the band adapted their way of performing to this. If the music allowed it, there was plenty of energy and interaction again. The guys even made madness out of each other, sometimes it seemed like ‘bad guys’. Yet it was nowhere too crazy or over the top. The full power remained until the last note of the encore ‘Children of the earth’.

Afterwards Praying Mantis took the time to talk to the fans and take pictures with them. They did this with energy and madness, and for a while their cheerful cries resounded through De Bosuil.
