Het kan zijn dat de naam Stephen Taranto je niet bekend in de oren klinkt. Bij de bandnaam ‘The Helix Nebula’ gaat er waarschijnlijk wel een belletje rinkelen bij de liefhebbers van (instrumentale) prog metal. Stephen is namelijk gitarist van deze band.

‘Aporia’ start vrij rustig, maar klinisch van geluid. Dit nummer kan nog alle kanten op. De wending naar meer tempo en volume laat langer op zich wachten dan gedacht, en is iets minder spannend dan verwacht. Het einde van dit korte nummer is vrij onverwacht.

‘Throne of the Anxious’ heeft een vliegende start. Hier zitten lichtere, kleine details in verwerkt. Natuurlijk hoor je volop lekker gillend gitaarwerk van Stephen. De drums klinken wat kil. Bovendien is er te kort aan dynamiek, zoals toonhoogteverschillen tussen de drums en het spelen van accenten. Door dit gemis aan ‘body’ in het drumwerk, trekt het te veel aandacht naar zich toe, dit gaat koste van onder andere de leuke details die in de muziek verwerkt zitten. Het klein gespeelde stuk is min of meer elektronisch van aard, de opbouw naar ‘topsnelheid’ is tamelijk voorspelbaar. Nogmaals, het gitaarspel is om van te smullen. Het klein gespeelde einde is prima.
Even blijft het klein, want de start van ‘Pixel Heart: Verdant’ is rustig. De metal komt tevoorschijn, maar verdwijnt af en toe. Er is goed gespeeld met de links-rechts verdeling in de koptelefoon. Er is een strak, snel gespeeld stuk, waarin in hoog tempo veel noten op je afgevuurd worden. De meerdere laagjes gitaarspel zijn heerlijk om naar te luisteren.
Het einde loopt mooi over naar ‘Pixel Heart: Celestial’ Dit start met een muziekje dat als ringtone kan fungeren. De korte kleine gespeelde delen worden vaak afgewisseld met metal. Doordat er in de uptempo delen niet zo veel variatie zit, komt het soms een beetje gehaast over. Het kortdurende geluid van de xylofoon is verrassend toegevoegd. De jazzinvloeden die je heel even hoort, houden net te kort stand om echt impact te hebben. Het einde is mooi klein gespeeld.

In ‘Quantum Leap’ worden er ‘pianoklanken’ rondgestrooid. Weer ben ik onder de indruk van het snarenwerk, zowel van de zwaarder bespeelde snaren, als het gillende gitaarwerk.
Tijdens een flink uptempo stuk is er van alles door elkaar te horen, toch blijft de balans grotendeels intact. ‘Pianoklanken’ en het geluid van ‘strijkers’ vormen de opbouw naar het einde.

Het merendeel van de nummers eindigt klein, bovendien is de opbouw naar het einde toe soms aan de korte kant. Hierdoor voelt niet alles helemaal compleet.
Je moet goed luisteren om alle details waar te nemen, sommige gaan bijna verloren tussen de hoeveelheid en /of het volume van de overige muziek. Zoals ik eerder aangaf haalt het drumwerk soms te veel aandacht naar zich toe. Dit had gerust meer naar het gitaarspel mogen gaan. Stephen had ook in de kalme delen best zijn kunnen wat meer op de voorgrond mogen laten horen. Het evenwicht in geluidsniveau tussen de instrumenten had wat meer naar gitaar en/of details kunnen gaan. Dit geldt voor de metal delen als de kleiner gespeelde delen. De invloeden van ‘The Helix Nebula’ zijn zeker in de metal goed hoorbaar.

Stephen Taranto – Permanence

The name Stephen Taranto may not sound familiar to you. The band name ‘The Helix Nebula’ probably rings a bell with lovers of (instrumental) prog metal. Stephen is the guitarist of this band.

Aporia‘ starts quite quietly, but has a coolly sound. This song can still go in all directions. The turn to more tempo and volume takes longer than expected, and is a bit less exciting than expected. The end of this short song is quite unexpected.

Throne of the Anxious‘ has a flying start. It contains lighter, small details. Of course, you hear plenty of screaming guitar skills from Stephen. The drums sound a bit chilly. Moreover, there is too little dynamics, such as pitch differences between the drums and playing accents. Because of this lack of ‘body’ in the drumming, it attracts too much attention to itself, this is at the expense of, among other things, the nice details that are incorporated in the music. The small piece played is more or less electronic in nature, the build-up to ’top speed’ is quite predictable. Again, the guitar playing is to be enjoyed. The small played end is fine.
For a while it remains small, because the start of ‘Pixel Heart: Verdant‘ is quiet. The metal appears, but disappears every now and then. The left-right division in the headphones is well done. There is a tight, fast-played piece, in which a lot of notes are fired at you at high speed. The multiple layers of guitar playing are great to listen to.
The end is nicely over to ‘Pixel Heart’: Celestial‘ This starts with a piece of music that can function as a ringtone. The short, small parts played are often alternated with metal. Because there is not much variation in the uptempo parts, it sometimes comes across as a bit rushed. The short sound of the xylophone is surprisingly added. The jazz influences you hear for a moment, are just too short to have any real impact. The end is nicely played small.

In ‘Quantum Leap‘ ‘piano sounds’ are scattered around. Again I am impressed by the strings, both of the heavier played strings, and the screaming guitar skills.
During a good up-tempo piece there is a lot to hear, yet the balance remains largely intact. Piano sounds’ and the sound of ‘strings’ form the structure towards the end.

Most of the songs end in a small way, moreover the build-up towards the end is sometimes a little short. Because of this not everything feels complete.
You have to listen carefully to hear all the details, some are almost lost between the amount and / or the volume of the other music. As I mentioned earlier, the drums sometimes draw too much attention to themselves. This should have gone more to guitar playing. Stephen should have been heard more in the foreground in the calm parts as well. The balance in sound level between the instruments could have gone a bit more to the guitar and/or details. This applies to the metal parts as well as the smaller parts played. The influences of ‘The Helix Nebula’ are certainly audible in the metal.
