De Zweedse prog rock-metal band heeft een grote schare trouwe fans. Ze treden niet zo vaak op, dat maakt hun liveoptredens wel extra bijzonder. Zeker als het op een mooie locatie is zoals het Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Dit is een openlucht amfitheater in de Rocky Mountains. Het ligt tussen twee blokken natuursteen van zo’n honderd meter hoog. Deze ligging is uniek, en een concert hier is op voorhand al bijna speciaal.
‘Sorceress’ is de titeltrack van hun album uit 2016. Je hoort dat het geluid van deze liveopname niet perfect is. Het lijkt of ik een stuk buiten het amfitheater aan het luisteren ben. Het geheel is goed verdeeld over de boxen. Op de dvd is te zien dat er veel wind is, dat bemoeilijkte natuurlijk de geluidsopnames. Ondanks de imperfectie weten ze mij absoluut te boeien. Zeker met de zwaar bespeelde snaren die toch vrij mooi uitkomen in deze openingstrack. Regelmatig zijn de fans op de achtergrond te horen, hierdoor krijg je live beleving prima mee.
‘Ghost Of Perdition’ is al wat ouder, Mikael Åkerfeldt start met zeer goede grunts. De veranderingen die ze spelen in de muziek zijn altijd goed, dat is hier ook het geval. Het klein gespeeld en gezonden deel is subliem. Tempo en volume worden langzaam opgebouwd. Snaren, toetsen en drums zijn goed in balans. De zang wordt prachtig als instrument toegevoegd.
Het eerste stuk van ‘Demon Of The Fall’ is instrumentaal. Daarna grunt Mikael er flink op los. Na een wat langer aanhoudende grunt, valt het volume in de muziek omlaag. Het gitaarspel is prachtig. Volume en tempo nemen snel toe, en Mikael laat weer gave grunts horen. De transities in muziek zijn fenomenaal, dat geldt ook voor het klein gespeelde einde. Het geklets met de fans duurt hier eigenlijk te lang. Zeker als je vaak naar de cd luistert gaat het wat vervelen.
Ook ‘In My Time Of Need’ is wat ouder. De meerdere vocalen komen mooi tot hun recht tijdens de ingetogen muziek. Fans nemen de zang over als Mikael zich even stilhoudt. Met dit prachtig klein gespeelde nummer toont Opeth zijn veelzijdigheid. Het blijft me keer op keer verbazen.
De meerdere stemmen komen ook mooi uit in ’Cusp Of Eternity’ De melodie van dit nummer blijft mooi, hoe vaak je het ook hoort.
‘Era’ heeft een prachtige akoestische start. De spanning wordt opgebouwd. Je voelt dat er heavy stuff aan gaat komen. Het eerste deel is bombastisch met veel toetsen. Even drumt Martin Axenrot bijna solo. Ook hier zijn de veranderingen in de muziek prachtig. De snaren worden regelmatig snel bespeeld en klinken dan ‘zwaar’, maar er is ook gaaf gillend gitaarspel te horen. De cleane zang is erg goed. Het nummer eindigt abrupt, waarna er weer een flinke monoloog volgt. ‘Deliverance’ is deels volle bak tempo, maar heeft ook kleiner gespeelde delen. Dit is een aangename, lange afsluiter van deze live cd.
Doordat het geluid wat vlak over komt, verliezen de nummers een deel van hun intensiteit. Vooral de donker gespeelde delen klinken niet zwaar genoeg. Maar dat neemt niet weg dat deze mannen live wel erg goed zijn! Er zijn volop prachtige tempo en volumewisselingen. Alles is in harmonie met elkaar. ‘Garden Of The Titans’ is dus zeker een goede live cd!

Especially when it is on a beautiful location like the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. This is an open-air amphitheatre in the Rocky Mountains. It lies between two blocks of natural stone of about a hundred meters high. This location is unique, and a concert here in advance is almost special.
Sorceress‘ is the title track of their album from 2016. You can hear that the sound of this live recording is not perfect. It seems like I’m listening outside the amphitheatre. The whole thing is well divided over the boxes. On the DVD you can see that there is a lot of wind, which of course made the sound recordings more difficult. Despite the imperfection, they know how to fascinate me. Especially with the heavily played strings that still come out pretty nice in this opening track. Regularly the fans can be heard in the background, so you get a great live experience.
Ghost Of Perdition‘ is a bit older, Mikael Åkerfeldt starts with very good grunts. The changes they play in the music are always good, that is also the case here. The small played and sent part is sublime. Pace and volume are slowly built up. Strings, keys and drums are well balanced. The vocals are beautifully added as an instrument.
The first piece of ‘Demon Of The Fall‘ is instrumental. After that Mikael grunts at it. After a longer lasting grunt, the volume in the music falls. The guitar playing is beautiful. Volume and tempo increase rapidly, and Mikael shows cool grunts again. The transitions in music are phenomenal, the same goes for the small end played. The chat with the fans here actually takes too long. Especially if you often listen to the CD it gets a bit boring.
Also ‘In My Time Of Need‘ is a bit older. The multiple vocals come into their own during the subdued music. Fans take over the vocals when Mikael stops for a moment. With this beautifully small song Opeth shows his versatility. It keeps surprising me time and time again.
The multiple voices also come out beautifully in ‘Cusp Of Eternity‘ The melody of this song remains beautiful, no matter how often you hear it.
Era‘ has a beautiful acoustic start. The tension is built up. You feel that heavy stuff is coming. The first part is bombastic with lots of keys. For a moment Martin Axenrot drums almost solo. Also here the changes in the music are beautiful. The strings are regularly played fast and sound ‘heavy’, but there is also screaming guitar playing to hear. The clean vocals are very good. The song ends abruptly, after which a big monologue follows. Deliverance‘ is partly full bin tempo, but also has smaller parts played. This is a pleasant, long end to this live CD.
Because the sound comes across as flat, the songs lose part of their intensity. Especially the dark parts don’t sound heavy enough. But that doesn’t mean that these men are very good live! There are plenty of beautiful tempo and volume changes. Everything is in harmony with each other. Garden Of The Titans‘ is definitely a good live CD!
