Ruud Dielen is de man achter Glorious Wolf. ‘Zodiac’ is het tweede album dat hij uitbrengt. Maar het eerste dat ook als fysiek exemplaar uit komt. Het artwork komt van Ed Unitsky. Dan weten kenners dat de cover en het lyric boekje er fantastisch uitzien. Natuurlijk is de dierenriem (zodiac) terug te vinden in het boekje.

‘Constellations’ (= sterrenbeelden) start mysterieus en sferisch. De spanning wordt, mede door de details, mooi opgebouwd. Het blijft vrij rustig van aard, toch komen er licht rockende elementen en vet lage tonen bij. Na ongeveer drie minuten klinken de eerste woorden, deze zitten tussen praten en zingen in. Tekst en muziek zijn in balans, de sfeer blijft bijzonder. Gaaf gitaarspel en allerlei geluiden lopen mooi in elkaar over. Het heerlijk lange instrumentale stuk is meeslepend, en bestaat onder andere uit prima saxofoonspel. De korte opbouw naar het einde bevat leuke details.

Het tempo van ‘Close To The New World’ is langzaam, de melodie is wat zoet. Een vleugje rock doorbreekt dit. De rock wordt afgewisseld met Spaanse invloeden. Soms klinken deze samen en vormen zo een bijzondere mix. De wendingen zijn onverwacht, maar gaaf.

‘Zodiac’ is de titeltrack. Deze werd al eerder gelanceerd en heeft bij diverse prog.rock stations al airplay gekregen. De vrij zoete klanken en lage tonen vormen een speciale blend. De gestapelde zang vormt een bijzondere, maar soms zoete melange. Muziek en zang zitten op één lijn, en blijven een poosje zoet van klank. Beide worden even later wat pittiger van karakter. Er is een terugkeer naar hoe het nummer startte. Daarna volgen nog enkele transities.

Het kalme gitaarspel van ‘Poets’ heeft de warme sfeer van een zomerse dag. Hier zingt Frans Verouden, zijn stem klinkt bijna liefelijk. Dat vormt een groot contrast met de zin:
“Next time I’ll break every bone in your body”.
In de tekst zijn er verwijzingen naar tarotkaarten. Ook het instrumentale stuk blijft relaxed. Toch zijn er behoorlijk wat details die het net wat extra’s geven.

Na een mysterieuze, licht klassieke georiënteerde start, komen in ‘Feelin’ Blue’ de blues invloeden naar boven. De toetsen zijn aangenaam langzaam bespeeld. De zang sluit daarbij aan, maar is wel vrij zoet. De woordeloze, zoete achtergrondzang haalt met vlagen te veel aandacht weg van het fantastische gitaarspel. Daarnaast voelt het contrast tussen deze twee korte tijd als een disbalans aan. Ook in het vocale gedeelte eist de achtergrondzang door de herhalingen te veel aandacht op. De emotie op de zang komt nu minder goed naar voren. In een aantal van de bovenstaande nummers heeft stem van Oscar Anema raakvlakken met de stem van Dave Kerzner.

In het instrumentale ‘For You And I’ blijven tempo en volume blijven ongeveer hetzelfde, toch is het goed gevuld met geleidelijke wendingen.

Op het fysieke exemplaar staan twee bonus tracks, deze komen van zijn debuutalbum ‘Aquarius’. In ‘Questions’ valt het gebruik van de softwarematige drums op. Het geluid is duidelijk ‘nep’ en de herhalingen zijn te veel. Het valt niet uit de toon bij de rest, maar het maakt wel duidelijk dat Glorious Wolf een ontwikkeling heeft doorgemaakt.
De gesproken sampling in Aquarius III – Seeding The Future’ is helemaal op de achtergrond, maar prima verweven in het geheel. Weer vallen het gave gitaarspel en de complexe opbouw op.

De complexiteit is in de meeste nummers te horen. Er zijn volop tegenstellingen en eigenzinnige wendingen. Bovendien zijn er veel details, zodat blijft ‘Zodiac’ verrassen. Er is volop gespeeld met de verdeling over de koptelefoon. Vooral qua intensiteit van het geluid heeft Glorious Wolf een flinke sprong vooruit gemaakt.

Glorious Wolf – Zodiac

The short build-up to the end contains nice details.

The tempo of ‘Close To The New World‘ is slow, the melody is a bit sweet. A touch of rock breaks through this. The rock is interspersed with Spanish influences. Sometimes they sound together and form a special mix. The twists and turns are unexpected, but cool.

‘Zodiac‘ is the title track. It was launched earlier and has gotten airplay at several prog.rock stations. The rather sweet sounds and low tones create a special blend.

On the physical copy are two bonus tracks, these are from his debut album ‘Aquarius‘. In ‘Questions‘ the use of the software-based drums is noticed. The sound is clearly ‘fake’ and the repetitions are too many. It does fit in with the rest, but it makes it clear that Glorious Wolf has evolved.
