De Canadese progband Mystery maakte een uitgebreide tour om hun album ‘Lies and Butterflies’ uit 2018 te promoten. In april (2019) traden ze op in Blue Note Jazz club in Poznan (Polen). Daar werden opnames van gemaakt. Het resultaat is een live album met de titel ‘Live in Poznan’. Met dit album willen ze hun trouwe fans bedanken voor alle steun die ze al jaren krijgen. Ondertussen zijn ze ook al bezig met een studioalbum. Maar eerst kunnen we genieten van dit live album, dat op 15 november uitkwam. Als eerste hoor je een bescheiden applaus. Aansluitend klinkt het gave intro van ‘Delusion Rain’, dit zorgt ervoor dat je meteen meegenomen wordt in het concert. Het gitaarspel van van Michel St-Père en Sylvain Moineau is super. De acapella zang is kort maar mooi. Jean Pageau brengt met zijn zang de emotie goed over. Het geluid is behoorlijk goed waardoor zowel de rockende delen als de meer ingetogen stukken vrij goed hun recht komen.
De track ‘Come to Me’ komt, net als de twee tracks die hierna komen, van het meest recente studio album ‘Lies and Butterflies’ (2018). Ze worden met overtuiging gespeeld en gezongen. Wie dit album al heeft, kan thuis deze drie nummers meezingen. Tijdens de nummers zelf, hoor je het publiek slechts af en toe. Zij genoten blijkbaar in redelijke rust van onder andere het pianospel in ‘Something to Believe In’. In dit nummer komt de stem van Jean helemaal mooi uit.
Je hoort aan het applaus en het gejuich dat ‘Blue Note Jazz club’ geen mega grote zaal is. Maar dat is voor een live beleving als luisteraar niet persé nodig. Zo past het bij Mystery, want de warmte die ze live concerten verspreiden is zelfs hier op de cd voelbaar.
‘The Scarlet Eye’ is meer dan 10 jaar oud. Toch sluit het goed aan bij de voorgaande nummers. Mystery laat je hiermee genieten van zowel nieuwe als oude nummers. De ontelbare wendingen worden goed gespeeld, meeslepende en rockende delen wisselen elkaar in alle nummers subliem af. Het vele toetsenwerk van Antoine Michaud en Jean is heerlijk. De ritmesectie met Francois Fournier op bas en Jean-Sébastien Goyette achter het drumstel kan ik niet ongenoemd laten. Zij spelen in dienst van de muziek, zonder dat ze alleen maar een bijrol hebben. Epics, zoals ‘The Willow Tree’ en het kortere ‘The Sailor and the Mermaid’ gaan hand in hand.
Laat je meevoeren met de meeslepende delen dat ieder nummer in zich heeft. Mystery neemt je mee terug in de tijd. Want de epic ‘Shadow of the Lake’ stamt zelfs uit de vorige eeuw. Ook hier is er een wisselwerking tussen rock en meer ingetogen en meeslepende stukken. Als geen ander weet Mystery dit naadloos met elkaar te verweven.
Disc 2
Het tweede schijfje begint met ‘Looking for Something Else’, en ook deze epic is indrukwekkend gebracht. Dit is misschien wel één van de mooiste tracks van ‘Lies and Butterflies. Ook ‘Dare to Dream’ en ‘Where Dreams come Alive’ komen van dat album. Hierna volgen er drie heerlijke epics. ‘A Song for You’ is de eerste, deze publiekslieveling krijgt een flink applaus. ‘Through Different Eyes’ is met zo’n 20 minuten de langste epic. ‘Chrysalis’ start ingetogen, maar volume en tempo nemen snel iets toe. Het ingetogen stuk wat hierop volgt is schitterend. Je hoort de fans niet, toch word je de muziek ingetrokken. De verschillende emoties die in zang en muziek zitten worden prima overgebracht. Als laatste de rockende start van ‘The Preacher’s Fall’. Doordat dit korte nummer als laatste is, is de cd jammer genoeg sneller dan verwacht afgelopen. Zowel met studio albums, als met live albums, Mystery weet je altijd te boeien. En dat geldt ook voor ‘Live in Poznan’.

The Scarlet Eye‘ is more than 10 years old. Still, it fits well with the previous songs. Mystery let you enjoy both new and old songs. The innumerable twists and turns are well played, compelling and rocking parts alternate in all songs sublime. The many keyboards of Antoine Michaud and Jean are delicious. I can’t ignore the rhythm section with Francois Fournier on bass and Jean-Sébastien Goyette behind the drums. They play in the service of the music, without having just a secondary role. Epics, like ‘The Willow Tree‘ and the shorter ‘The Sailor and the Mermaid‘ go hand in hand.
Let yourself be carried away by the compelling parts that every song has in it. Mystery takes you back in time. Because the epic ‘Shadow of the Lake‘ even dates back to the past century. Here too there is an interaction between rock and more subdued and compelling pieces. Like no other Mystery knows how to weave this seamlessly together.
Disc 2
The second disc starts with ‘Looking for Something Else‘, and this epic has been brought impressive as well. This is perhaps one of the most beautiful tracks of ‘Lies and Butterflies‘. Also ‘Dare to Dream‘ and ‘Where Dreams come Alive‘ come from that album. After these three delicious epics follow. ‘A Song for You‘ is the first one, this crowd pleaser gets a big applause. ‘Through Different Eyes‘ is with about 20 minutes the longest epic. ‘Chrysalis‘ starts subdued, but volume and tempo increase a little bit.
