In 2007 werd in Los Angeles de progressieve (opera) rockband Lobate Scarp opgericht. Ze hebben zich laten beïnvloeden door classic prog rock uit 70’s, bijvoorbeeld door Genesis en Yes. Maar ook Simple Minds, Tears for Fears en andere popbands uit de jaren ‘80 hebben hun geïnspireerd. Daarbij voegen ze soms licht theatrale aspecten toe. Hun debuutalbum ‘Time and Space’ was een AOR-rockopera, inclusief koor, strijkers, Theremin e.d.
Zo’n drie maanden geleden kwam ‘Spirals and Portals’ uit. Deze EP valt niet in de categorie rockopera. Mijn review is een beetje laat, maar ‘Spirals and Portals’ is te mooi om te laten liggen.

‘Nothing Wrong’ start langzaam, maar mysterieus en meeslepend. Het mysterieuze geluid komt van de dilruba. Dit is een Indisch snaarinstrument, en is min of meer een combinatie van de sitar en sarangi. Er komen gave bastonen bij, op de achtergrond blijft de muziek mysterieus. Het geluid van een hoge stem doet daar een schepje bovenop. De aparte manier waarop de Adam Sears zingt, sluit aan bij de muziek. Op een gegeven moment is het mysterieuze verdwenen, de rock is hiervoor in de plaats gekomen. Er zit een vleugje pop in verwerkt, de achtergrondzang is prima ingezet. Tegelijkertijd zijn er best heel wat laagjes, met name door toetsen en snaren. Na een heerlijk stuk gitaarspel is de elektronische kant van de toetsen te horen. Tussen dit alles hoor je zo nu en dan diverse strijkinstrumenten, de helderheid hiervan had iets sprankelender/warmer gekund. Het einde is vrij onverwacht, maar dat is juist het mooie.

Ook ‘And We Tried’ start rustig, Adam zingt teder, zijn stem en het akoestische gitaarspel vormen een mooie harmonie. Tempo en volume worden vrij snel opgebouwd, maar dat is maar voor even, want beide zakken een beetje. Nu het ritme heerlijk langzaam is, blijkt dat dit een duet is. De stemmen van Robyn Kirmssé en Adam kleuren goed bij elkaar. Juist in dit langzame stuk is er mooie dynamiek in het drummen te horen. Tempo en volume gaan nogmaals omhoog, Adam’s pianoklanken dwarrelen hier doorheen. Weer is er heerlijk gitaarspel, dit is in combinatie, dan wel afgewisseld met de toetsen. Diverse details in de muziek hoor je pas na een aantal keer luisteren. De strijkinstrumenten smelten op de achtergrond samen met het geheel. In zang klinkt volharding, de vocale uithaal is lang en goed. Ook de samenzang klinkt overtuigend. Daarna is de zang ingetogen, de muziek gaat hierin mee, en zo eindigt deze tweede track mooi klein.

Meerdere laagjes tijdens het intro van ‘Beautiful Light’ worden mooier naarmate je vaker luistert. Het klinkt misschien eenvoudig, maar de balans tussen de laagjes, en de geluidskwaliteit zijn zeer goed. De blend tussen de zoete en/of vrolijke klanken en de basgrooves die hierop volgen is een ‘ear-catcher’. De mix van de stemmen samen hebben wel wat weg van Spock’s Beard. Dit kan komen omdat Rich Mouser dit album gemixt heeft, daarnaast heeft hij de coproductie gedaan. Ook dit nummer is apart, maar mooi opgebouwd. Ook hier zijn er heel veel laagjes, onder andere van hobo, klarinet, en Moog. Ondanks de hoeveelheid laagjes is de muziek niet bombastisch. Bovendien zijn talloze details, toch voelt het geheel makkelijk aan. Je moet dus echt een aantal keer luisteren voordat je de nummers een beetje gaat kennen. Vlak voor het einde is er een klein, emotioneel gezongen en gespeeld deel. Het lijkt nu afgelopen, maar na een rust is er een ‘hidden part’. Deze is net te zacht en te kort om diepe indruk te maken.

Tot slot is er de radio edit van ‘Nothing Wrong’. Vooral het intro is korter. Deze versie had eigenlijk beter tot zijn recht gekomen als lange versie een epic was van 10 minuten of langer.

Lobate Scarp is al bezig met een opvolger: ‘You Have It All’ (full album). Hier doen fantastische gastmuzikanten aan mee, zoals: Billy Sherwood en Jon Davison (Yes) en Ryo Okumoto (Spock’s Beard). De kickstarter campagne loopt nog tot 16 december. De goal is nog niet bereikt, help je mee? Dat kan hier.

Zoals eerder aangegeven bevat ‘Spirals and Portals’ talloze details en veel laagjes. De opbouw is complex, maar de structuur is heel toegankelijk. Je krijgt dit allemaal niet mee met één keer luisteren, dit is een zeer goed album dat echt moet groeien.

Lobate Scarp – Spirals and Portals

About three months ago ‘Spirals and Portals‘ was released. This EP doesn’t belong to the rock opera category. My review is a bit late, but ‘Spirals and Portals‘ is too good to be ignored.

‘Nothing Wrong‘ starts slowly, but mysteriously and compellingly. The mysterious sound comes from the dilruba. This is an Indian stringed instrument, and is more or less a combination of the sitar and sarangi. There are cool bass tones, in the background the music remains mysterious. The sound of a high voice added to all this. The unusual way in which the Adam Sears sings is in harmony with the music. At a certain point the mystery has disappeared, rock has replaced it. There is a hint of pop in it, the background vocals are fine. At the same time there are quite a few layers, especially through keyboards and strings. After a wonderful piece of guitar playing you can hear the electronic side of the keys. In between all this you can hear various string instruments every now and then, the clarity of which could have been a bit more sparkling/warmer. The end is quite unexpected, but that’s the beauty of it.

Also ‘And We Tried‘ starts quietly, Adam sings tenderly, his voice and the acoustic guitar play form a beautiful harmony. Tempo and volume are built up quite quickly, but that’s only for a short time, because both drop down a little. Now that the rhythm is wonderfully slow, it turns out that this is a duet. The voices of Robyn Kirmssé and Adam match very well. Especially in this slow piece you can hear beautiful dynamics in the drumming. Tempo and volume go up again, Adam swirls piano tones through this. Again, there is wonderful guitar playing, this is in combination, or alternated with the keys. Various details in the music can only be heard after listening a few times. The stringed instruments melt together with the whole in the background. In vocals perseverance can be heard, the vocal outburst is long and good. The harmony vocals also sound convincing. Then the vocals are subdued, the music goes along with this, and so this second track ends nicely small.

Multiple layers during the intro of ‘Beautiful Light‘ become more beautiful the more you listen. It may sound simple, but the balance between the layers, and the sound quality are very good. The blend between the sweet and/or cheerful sounds and the bass grooves that follow is an ‘ear-catcher’. The mix of the voices together are a bit like Spock’s Beard. This may be because Rich Mouser mixed this album, he also did the co-production. This song is also unique, but nicely constructed. Here too there are a lot of layers, including oboe, clarinet, and Moog. Despite the amount of layers, the music is not bombastic. On top of that there are many details, yet the whole feels easy. So, you really have to listen a couple of times before you get to know the songs a bit. Just before the end there is a small, emotionally sung and played part. It seems to be over now, but after a musical rest, there is a ‘hidden part’. This one is just too soft and too short to make a deep impression.

At the end there is the radio edit of ‘Nothing Wrong‘. Especially the intro is shorter. This version would have done better if the long version was an epic of 10 minutes or more.

Lobate Scarp is already working on a successor: ‘You Have It All’ (full album). Great guest musicians join in, like: Billy Sherwood and Jon Davison (Yes) and Ryo Okumoto (Spock’s Beard). As mentioned before, ‘Spirals and Portals‘ contains many details and many layers. The construction is complex, but the structure is very accessible. You won’t be able to hear all this at once, this is a very good album that really needs to grow.
