De prog band Flying Colors mag je echt een supergroep noemen, want ze bestaat uit vijf muzikale grootheden. Ze hebben het zo druk, dat het niet mee viel om tijd te maken voor hun derde album: ‘Third Degree’.
Het album begint met ‘The Loss Inside’ lekker rockend, bas, gitaar en toetsen, alles doet volop mee. Vrij snel is er een iets kleiner gespeeld stuk. Deze stukken zing je al vrij snel mee. Natuurlijk klinkt er fantastisch gitaarspel. Het orgelspel is regelmatig bombastisch. De bas grooves zijn vet aangezet. Door deze combinatie zal menig prog hart sneller gaan kloppen. Het einde is vrij plotseling, maar gaaf.
De stem van Casey McPherson klinkt vervormd in ‘More’. Tempo en volume blijven in eerste instantie ongeveer gelijk. De wendingen zijn vrij subtiel, later worden de verschillen groter. Na een uptempo stuk is het klein gespeelde deel verrassend, er klinkt emotie in de stem van Casey. In één klap is er meer volume, wat een prachtig crescendo! Nu tempo en volume een stuk hoger zijn, is de muziek even licht chaotisch. De opbouw naar het einde toe is wat voorspelbaar. Maar de laatste seconden zijn toch nog verrassend.
De eigen stijl van Flying Colors komt onder andere naar voren in ‘Cadence’. De strijkinstrumenten geven een mooie aanvulling. Het ritme is hier even vrij gewoon, de details komen van de melodische delen. Alles is en blijft in harmonie. De strijkinstrumenten klinken te midden van een flinke hoeveelheid muziek. Toch komen ze nergens in de verdrukking. De opbouw naar het einde is prima.
De ritmesectie heeft met vlagen de hoofdrol in ‘Guardian’. Live gespeeld gaat het dak er zeker af. Vooral als Mike Portnoy laat horen wat hij in huis heeft. Hier smullen de fans van! Het einde van deze opzwepende, maar soms licht zoete track, is vrij gewoontjes.
Ook al zou je niet weten welke band dit is, dan weet je in de eerste tien seconden van ‘Last Train Home’ dat dit de Flying Colors zijn.
Tijdens de ingetogen zang zijn de drums korte tijd stil. Sommige veranderingen zijn wat voorspelbaar, anderen zijn onverwachter. Beide soorten zijn mooi gespeeld. Delen van de tekst zijn gemakkelijk mee te zingen. Toch is dit nummer complex van structuur. Er is een gave wending naar akoestisch gitaarspel. (Uptempo) instrumentale delen worden afgewisseld met vocale. Sommige stukken nodigen uit om uit volle borst mee te zingen. Het einde wordt langzaam weggedraaid.
De tekst van ‘You Are Not Alone’ is wat clichématig, en soms vrij zoet. Het is gevoelig gespeeld en intens gezongen, en zal zeker steun bieden aan wie het moeilijk heeft. Doordat tempo en volume niet te veel toenemen, blijft de intensiteit van dit nummer bestaan.
Na het vrolijk klinkende ‘Love Letter’ (waar een klein foutje in zit), is het alweer tijd voor het laatste nummer. ‘Crawl’ start kalm, maar is daarna heel divers en complex. Het bevat lekker porties prog-rock, maar ook kleine en meeslepende delen, waarvan sommige onder mijn huid kruipen. Deze epic is van begin tot en met het einde ear candy.
Deze negen nummers zijn zo uitgekiend geschreven dat ze live gespeeld voor een feestje zullen zorgen. Je hoort subliem gitaarspel, vette bas grooves, heerlijk toetsenwerk, en fantastisch drumwerk dat constant in dienst is van het geheel. De achtergrondzang/gestapelde zang is prachtig toegevoegd. Misschien is het her en der niet verrassend genoeg, en ietwat commercieel van opzet. Maar technisch is het van hoogstaand niveau. De Flying Colors maakt de verwachting waar: ‘Third Degree’ is een zeer goed album.

Now that tempo and volume are a lot higher, the music is just as slightly chaotic. The build-up towards the end is a bit predictable. But the last few seconds are still surprising.
The own style of Flying Colors comes to the fore, for example, in ‘Cadence‘, The stringed instruments are a nice addition. The rhythm is quite common here, the details come from the melodic parts. Yet this song has a complex structure. There is a cool twist to acoustic guitar playing. (Uptempo) instrumental parts are alternated with vocal parts. Some pieces invite you to sing along with them. The end is slowly turned away.
The text of ‘You Are Not Alone‘ is a bit clichéd, and sometimes quite sweet. It is sensitively played and intensely sung, and will certainly offer support to those who are struggling. Because tempo and volume don’t increase too much, the intensity of this song remains.
After the cheerful sounding ‘Love Letter‘ (which contains a small mistake), it’s time for the last song. ‘Crawl‘ starts calmly, but is very diverse and complex after that.
