In de loop der jaren zijn er enkele wisselingen geweest in de bezetting van de Engelse prog-band ‘Drifting Sun’. Op het nieuwe album ‘Planet Junkie’ is zanger Peter Falconer, met zijn markante stem, niet meer te horen. Nu zijn er drie gastzangers.
Elektronische klanken hebben de overhand aan het begin van ‘Within Your Bones’. De zang van Marc Atkinson smelt mooi samen met de muziek. De extra stemmen zijn subtiel toegevoegd, ze zijn subliem verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Rock wordt een aantal keer afgewisseld met kleiner gespeelde delen. Details uit zang en muziek keren een paar keer terug. Er zijn veel laagjes en transities in de muziek. Het gitaarspel van Mathieu Spaeter is gaaf. Will Jones heeft een strakke maar dynamische manier van drummen. Deze openingstrack eindigt strak.
‘Planet Junkie’ start heerlijk rockend, de toetsen van Pat Sanders zijn in het eerste stuk op de voorgrond te horen. Manu Michael is met zijn bas ook duidelijk aanwezig. Er zijn talloze wendingen, waarvan een aantal onverwacht. Zo ook de wending vlak voor het einde, gaaf gedaan!
In ‘Missing’ zingt Marc klein en gevoelig, hij is goed te verstaan. Daardoor komt de tekst, in combinatie met de meeslepende muziek binnen.
Pat Sanders laat in ‘Life’ minimalistisch pianospel horen. Het is mooi gespeeld, maar deze korte track is net te snel afgelopen.
De stem van ‘Colin Mold’ is heel anders, dat is duidelijk te horen in ‘Night-Time Sorrow. Ook de twee nummers die hierop volgen zingt hij. ‘Stay With Me’ start sferisch. Weer zijn er meerdere laagjes in de zang. Dit rustige nummer bevat diverse details. Bovendien is er gevarieerd gitaarspel door verschillende gitaren. Jammer dat dit in een fade out eindigt.
Delen van de tekst van ‘To Tame a Star’ worden gefluisterd, soms gelijktijdig met de zang. Het vioolspel is vrij somber, en is soms best ver op de achtergrond. De harmonie tussen de instrumenten onderling, en tussen zang en muziek blijft bestaan. Het orgel scheurt eerst lekker door een rockend stuk heen, vervolgens de gitaar. Weer is er zo’n moment dat je niet weet of het nummer wel of niet eindigt. Dit is een gave wending naar een rustig stuk! Ook in dit stuk zitten er bijzondere tegenstellingen in het tempo.
‘I Will Be King’ is een heerlijk instrumentaal prog nummer, waarin gaaf maar apart Hammond spel te horen is. Daarnaast is er volop ruimte voor bas en gitaar. De saxofoon baan zich er ook zo nu en dan een weg doorheen. De manier van drummen is strak en steady.
De drie nummers die volgen zijn gezongen door Joshua Corum, hij heeft een vrij markante stem. Maar ook zijn stem past in het geheel. Door de staccato manier van zingen klinkt ‘Diogenes’ anders. Ook hier zijn er bijzondere veranderingen en details in zang en muziek. Door het grote aantal opmerkelijke elementen zal deze track misschien even wennen zijn. Of je nu moet wennen of niet, het duurt wel een tijd voordat je zang en muziek goed kent. Het einde is net iets te vroeg afgekapt
De zang klinkt deels vervormd in ‘Everlasting Creed’. Daar zullen de meningen van de luisteraars ongetwijfeld over verschillen. Waar iedereen het wel over eens zal zijn, is dat ook deze laatst track volop afwisseling biedt.
Doordat er best veel op je af komt, moet het album wel groeien. Ondanks de verschillen tussen de stemmen is er eenheid tussen de nummers. Er zijn overeenkomsten, maar ook voldoende verschillen met de voorgaande albums. ‘Planet Junkie’ is voor de prog liefhebber van complexe, maar niet al te heavy prog rock.

There are many layers and transitions in the music. Mathieu Spaeter’s guitar playing is amazing. Will Jones has a tight but dynamic way of drumming. This opening track ends tightly.
‘Planet Junkie‘ starts off with fantastic rock, the keyboards of Pat Sanders can be heard in the foreground in the first piece. Manu Michael is also clearly present with his bass. There are countless twists and turns, some of which are unexpected. So is the turn just before the end, well done!
In ‘Missing‘ Marc sings small and sensitive, he is very understandable. That’s why the lyrics, in combination with the compelling music, come in.
Pat Sanders plays minimalist piano in ‘Life‘. It is nicely played, but this short track ended just too quickly.
The voice of ‘Colin Mold’ is very different, that can clearly be heard in ‘Night-Time Sorrow‘. He also sings the two songs that follow. Stay With Me‘ starts spherical. Again, there are several layers in the vocals. This quiet song contains several details. Moreover, there is varied guitar playing by different guitars. A pity that this ends in a fade out.
Parts of the lyrics of ‘To Tame a Star‘ are whispered, sometimes at the same time as the singing. The violin playing is quite gloomy, and is sometimes quite far in the background. The harmony between the instruments themselves, and between voice and music remains. The organ first tears through a rocking piece, then the guitar. Again, there is such a moment that you don’t know if the song ends or not. This is a cool turn to a quiet piece! Also, in this piece there are special contradictions in the tempo.
‘I Will Be King‘ is a lovely instrumental prog song, in which you can hear cool but unique Hammond playing. There is also plenty of room for bass and guitar. The saxophone also makes its way through it now and then. The way of drumming is tight and steady.
The three songs that follow are sung by Joshua Corum, he has a pretty striking voice. But also, his voice fits into the whole. Because of the staccato way of singing ‘Diogenes‘ sounds different. Here too there are special changes and details in vocals and music. Due to the large number of remarkable elements, this track may take some time to get used to. Whether you have to get used to it or not, it takes a while before you know vocals and music well. The end is just a little too early truncated.
The vocals sound partly distorted in ‘Everlasting Creed‘. The opinions of the listeners will undoubtedly differ about this. What everyone will agree on, is that this last track also offers plenty of variety.
Because there is quite a lot heading towards to you, the album has to grow. Despite the differences between the voices, there is unity between the songs. There are similarities, but also sufficient differences with the previous albums. ‘Planet Junkie‘ is for the prog lover of complex, but not too heavy prog rock.
