Eind vorig jaar verliet zanger Mark Smits de symfonische rockband Knight Area. Jan Willem Ketelears (o.a Ayreon, Gary Moore Tribute Band NL) is een geweldige vervanger. De (instrumentale) basis voor D-Day was er al, Jan Willem schreef alle teksten voor dit conceptalbum.
Als eerste hoor je de speech door president Dwight D. Eisenhower, van 6 juni 1944. Ondertussen klinkt er op de achtergrond symfonische muziek, dit is prachtig toegevoegd. Hierna start ‘New Horizon’ rustig, de manier van drummen krijgt langzaam gelijkenissen met een marstempo. Dan komt er een opbouw naar de rock. Met zijn gedreven stem weet Jan Willem meteen te overtuigen. Tijdens het instrumentale stuk neigt de muziek even naar de metal. Deze openingstrack is pakkend en meeslepend tegelijk.
De muziek in ‘Overlord’ is soms wat chaotisch, maar dat past in het totaalbeeld. De snaren zijn aangenaam zwaar bespeeld, en er is heerlijk veel toetsenwerk te horen. De ritmesectie speelt een paar keer zo snel dat het op een machinegeweer lijkt. Hiertussen zit een lichter gespeeld deel. Dit nummer eindigt strak.
‘Blood On The Risers’ is opgedragen aan de Amerikaanse parachutisten van de 82ste en 101ste Airborne Divisies. Na een rustig begin volgt er zwaardere symfonische rock. Jan Willem zingt over “horsas in the sky”, dit zijn de vliegtuigen van de geallieerden. Dit is het verhaal over de nachtelijke uren van 6 juni 44, waarin de geallieerden gedropt werden. Zang en muziek zijn filmisch van aard, de achtergrondzang is fantastisch toegevoegd. Het Luchtmacht Mannenkoor zingt op het laatst een stukje van het paratroepers lied ‘Blood On the Risers (Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die)’. Deze meerstemmige zang klinkt als een groot koor in een kerkelijke akoestiek.
De lage, langzame zang en de meeslepende muziek in ‘The Landing’ raken me. De opbouw naar meer volume is, net al de rest van dit nummer, intens en pakkend.
De integere muziek van ‘Omaha Beach’ raakt me. De duidelijk gezongen woorden zorgen voor kippenvel, je ziet de gezichten van de soldaten voor je. Langzaam wordt het volume in zang en muziek opgebouwd, Jan Willem laat indrukwekkende vocale uithalen horen. Vooral de woorden “I’ll come home to you” snijden door mijn ziel. Hoeveel mannen hebben dat beloofd en zijn toch niet (levend) teruggekeerd? Na het horen van het luchtalarm op het einde heb ik tranen in mijn ogen.
Hierna is ‘Rememberance’, mede door de achtergrondzang wat ‘luchtiger’. Zo is de structuur van dit album toegankelijk gehouden.
De eerste noten die Robby Valentine op de vleugel speelt in ‘When I’ll Be With You’ raken mij al. Jan Willem zingt ook hier met bezieling.
De emotie in het nummer verandert langzaam, de intensiteit blijft gelijk. Een koor wordt op de achtergrond ingezet als instrument. De opbouw naar het einde is subliem.
Het dynamische drumwerk valt op in ‘Wings Of Time’. Weer is de balans tussen symfonie en rock, net als tussen zang en muziek perfect. Het geluid van het album is goed, bovendien is alles prima verdeeld over de koptelefoon.
Voor ‘March To Victory’ hoor je een toespraak van premier Winston Churchill, op 8 mei 1945. Daarna volgt pakkende muziek, waarin soms gestapelde zang zit. Het kleiner gespeelde deel is prachtig ingelast.
In ‘Freedom For Everyone’ vraagt een kind:” Why did daddy had to die?” Knight Area brengt hiermee een ode aan hen die sneuvelde voor onze vrijheid. Er klinkt ook hoop door in dit slotnummer, de hoop op vrijheid voor iedereen.
Het is duidelijk dat Knight Area zich goed verdiept heeft in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Jan Willem kan klein en gevoelig zingen, maar ook met enorme power. Doordat er bij ieder nummer extra informatie staat, krijgen zang en muziek nog meer diepgang. Alle nummers zijn goed opgebouwd, zang en muziek versterken elkaar. Met D-Day heeft Knight Area dit deel van de oorlog fantastisch en respectvol verwoord.

‘Blood On The Risers‘ is dedicated to the American paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. After a quiet start there is heavier symphonic rock. The low, slow vocals and the compelling music in ‘The Landing‘ touch me. The build-up to more volume is, just like the rest of this song, intense and catchy.
The honest music of ‘Omaha Beach‘ touches me. The clearly sung words give you goose bumps, you can imagine the faces of the soldiers. Slowly the volume in vocals and music is built up, Jan Willem plays impressive vocals. Especially the words “I’ll come home to you” cut through my soul. How many men have promised that and haven’t returned (alive)? After hearing the air alarm at the end, I have tears in my eyes.
After this is ‘Rememberance‘, partly because of the background vocals a bit ‘lighter’. Thus, the structure of this album is kept accessible.
The first notes Robby Valentine plays on the grand piano in ‘When I’ll Be With You‘ already touch me. Again, Jan Willem sings with dedication.
The emotion in the song changes slowly, the intensity remains the same. A choir is added as an instrument in the background. The construction towards the end is sublime.
The dynamic drumming is striking in ‘Wings Of Time‘. As usual there is a perfect balance between symphony and rock, as well as between vocals and music. The sound of the album is good, moreover, everything is well distributed over the headphones.
Before ‘March To Victory‘ you hear a speech by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, on May 8, 1945. Then follows catchy music, with sometimes stacked vocals. The smaller part played is beautifully inserted.
In ‘Freedom For Everyone‘ a child asks: “Why did daddy had to die?” Knight Area pays tribute to those who died for our freedom. There is also hope in this final song, the hope of freedom for everyone.
It is clear that Knight Area has studied the Second World War well. Jan Willem can sing small and sensitive, but also with enormous power. Because every song come with extra information in the booklet, vocals and music get even more depth. All tracks are well constructed, singing and music strengthened each other. With D-Day, Knight Area has captured this part of the war in a fantastic way.
