Final Coil werd zo’n 11 jaar geleden opgericht in Leicester. Ze maken een mix van prog- en post rock. Instrumentale delen nemen dus een prominente plaats in. ‘The World We Left Behind For Others’ is hun tweede full cd. Dit conceptalbum gaat over mensen die leefden in de schaduw van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De teksten worden vanuit verschillende perspectieven bezongen, daarom zijn ze niet makkelijk te doorgronden.
De openingstrack is een instrumentaal nummer. Je voelt dat er een opbouw naar de rock gaat komen, maar die blijft langer weg dan gedacht. Als de rock wat zwaarder wordt, zijn we al aanbeland in ‘The Last Battle’. Gitarist, toetsenist en zanger Phil Stiles heeft een eigen kleur van stem. De woorden die hij zingt zijn vanuit de invalshoek van een soldaat. Deze man strijdt met zichzelf, met het leven; want de maatschappij heeft geen oog voor wat doormaakt. Het tempo in de instrumentale stukken is over het algemeen vrij laag, bovendien zijn de snaren zwaar bespeeld. Maar er zit ook meespelend gitaarwerk tussen. Dit wordt afgewisseld met strakker gespeelde stukken. Richard Awdry doet de achtergrondzang, hun stemmen vormen een prima match. Daarnaast hanteert Richard onder andere ook gitaar. Het einde wordt langzaam weggedraaid.
Het tempo ligt hoger in ‘Scattered Dust’, het ritme is zelfs even opzwepend. Vrij snel daalt het tempo, weer sluit de zang aan bij de muziek. Phil zingt in eerste instantie wat monotoon. Er zijn diverse tempo en volumewisselingen. Even later laat hij met krachtig gezongen woorden wel variatie horen. Het gitaarwerk is om van te smullen. Ook dit nummer sterft weg.
In de goed opgebouwde nummers die hierna komen blijft vooral het goede, soms zware snarenwerk positief opvallen. Daar heeft bassist Jola Stiles natuurlijk ook een flink aandeel in. De meeste nummers lopen in elkaar over, maar je hoort wel degelijk de wending.
‘Convicted Of The Right’ is heerlijk langzaam gespeeld. Op de achtergrond hoor je zo nu en dan het geluid dat op cello/alt viool lijkt. Vooral op het einde zitten er allerlei geluidjes in verweven. Hier is subliem mee gespeeld in de koptelefoon.
Drummer Barry French laat in ‘Ashes Ashes’ horen dat hij de kunst van het weg laten goed beheerst. Je hoort steeds een paar strakke slagen, dan pakt hij even rust. Dit vormt een mooie combinatie met de woorden die gezongen worden. Hier doorheen zijn enkele pianoklanken te horen. Weer klinken er sombere ‘strijkinstrumenten’ op de achtergrond. Zo zijn er ‘stiekem’ heel wat laagjes verwerkt in de vrij langzame, maar complexe muziek. ‘One More Drink’ is een kort dromerig, instrumentaal nummer. Dit vormt een contrast met de pittige start van ‘….And I’ll Leave’. In tegenstelling tot een aantal voorgaande nummers, heeft dit nummer een strak einde.
‘Imaginary Trip’ start met sferische muziek, Phil zingt zijn zinnen langzaam. Zo zijn zang en muziek constant in balans. Bovendien vormen melodie en ritme ook continu een eenheid. De toetsen zijn geraffineerd in het geheel verwerkt. De opbouw naar zwaardere muziek is gaaf, weer vallen de bas en gitaar positief op. Samen met de drums vormt dit alles een solide formatie. Tijdens de minimalistische opbouw naar het einde laat Barry zijn drumstokken liggen.
De titeltrack is voor het laatste bewaard, deze begint vrij klein. Maar al snel is er een verandering naar de zwaardere muziek. Deze transformeert een aantal keer naar lichtere muziek en weer terug. Bovendien zitten er in de zwaardere muziek lichtere elementen verweven. Na een heerlijk uitgebreid instrumentaal stuk heeft Phil’s stem een grimmige intonatie. Het einde sterft prachtig weg.
Alle tracks op ‘The World We Left Behind For Others’ hebben een solide structuur. Dit album moet groeien, de teksten hebben tijd nodig om te settelen. Ondanks het zwaardere onderwerp is het geheel niet te somber. Als je nog niet bekend bent met Final Coil, check dan hun bandcamp pagina!

Final Coil – The World We Left Behind For Others
Final Coil was founded about 11 years ago in Leicester. They make a mix of prog- and post rock. Instrumental parts have a prominent place. ‘The World We Left Behind For Others‘ is their second full CD. This concept album is about people who lived in the shadow of the Second World War. The lyrics are sung from different perspectives, so they are not easy to fathom.
The opening track is an instrumental song. You can feel a build-up to rock, but it stays away longer than expected. When the rock gets heavier, we’re already in ‘The Last Battle‘. Guitarist, keyboardist and singer Phil Stiles has his own colour of voice. The words he sings are from a soldier’s point of view. This man fights with himself, with life; because the society has no interest in what is going on. The tempo in the instrumental pieces is generally quite slow, moreover the strings are heavily played. But there is also compelling guitar work. This is alternated with more tightly played pieces. Richard Awdry does the background vocals, their voices make a great match. Besides that, Richard also uses guitar. The end is slowly turned away.
The tempo is higher in ‘Scattered Dust‘, the rhythm is even equally exciting. Pretty quickly the tempo drops, again the vocals are in line with the music. Phil sings a bit monotonous at first. There are various tempo and volume changes. A little later he does show variation with powerfully sung words. The guitar work is to be enjoyed. This song also dies away.
In the well-built songs that follow, the good, sometimes heavy bass/guitar work is still a positive thing. Of course, bassist Jola Stiles also has a big role in this. Most of the songs merge into one another, but you do hear the twist.
‘Convicted Of The Right‘ is played wonderfully slowly. In the background you can occasionally hear the sound that resembles cello/alt violin. Especially at the end there are all kinds of sounds woven into it. This is sublimely played with in the headphones.
Drummer Barry French shows in ‘Ashes Ashes‘ that he has a good control over ’the art of leaving out’. You can hear a few tight beats, then he takes a rest. This is a beautiful combination with the words that are sung. Through this you can hear some piano sounds. Again, you can hear sombre ‘string instruments’ in the background. There are ‘secretly’ many layers in the rather slow, but complex music. ‘One More Drink‘ is a short, dreamy, instrumental song. This forms a contrast with the fierce start of ‘….And I’ll Leave‘. In contrast to a number of previous songs, this song has a tight ending.
‘Imaginary Trip‘ starts with atmospheric music, Phil sings his sentences slowly. So, vocals and music are constantly in balance. Moreover, melody and rhythm form a continuous unity. The keyboards are refined in the whole. The build-up to heavier music is cool, again the bass and guitar stand out very well. Together with the drums this forms a solid formation. During the minimalist build-up to the end Barry leaves his drumsticks untouched.
The title track has been saved for the very last, it starts quite small. But soon there is a change to the heavier music. This transforms a few times to lighter music and back again. Moreover, lighter elements are interwoven in the heavier music. After a wonderfully extensive instrumental piece, Phil’s voice has a grim intonation. The end dies away beautifully.
