Het Duitse prog rock project KariBow is in de jaren ’90 opgericht door zanger/multi-instrumentalist Oliver Rüsing. In 1998 kwam zijn debuutalbum ‘Supernatural Foe’ in kleine oplage uit. Sinds het album ‘Addiceted’ uit 2014 is er weer belangstelling voor ‘Supernatural Foe’.
Vanwege de toenmalige geluidskwaliteit en de huidige technische mogelijkheden nam Oliver alles opnieuw op. Qua compositie is hij zo dicht mogelijk bij het origineel gebleven, maar de geluidskwaliteit op deze nieuwe uitgave is veel beter. Hierdoor is dit de wedergeboorte van ‘Supernatural Foe’, vandaar de toevoeging ‘Rebirth’.
‘Run’ heeft vooral door het drumwerk een krachtige start. Daarnaast lijkt er op de achtergrond een koebel te klinken. Wanneer Oliver begint te zingen, is het ritme nog steeds opzwepend. De veranderingen vloeien in elkaar over. De langere vocalen uithalen van Oliver zijn prima, bovendien heeft hij een duidelijke uitspraak. Er is een wending naar een rustiger stuk, met een warme, vriendelijke melodie.
Aan het begin van ‘Supernatural Foe’ is er een vette bas sound. Je zou bijna verwachten dat er een portie hardrock komt. Er komt geen hardrock, maar het tempo ligt wel hoog. Later is de zang van Oliver gevoelig en breekbaar. Des te verrassender is de omslag terug naar volle bak tempo. Het einde is verrassend zacht.
Diverse gesampelde geluiden zorgen voor een bijzonder intro van ‘Burning Books’. Het vervolg van deze epic is al net zo bijzonder. De woorden zijn vol overtuiging gezongen. De mooie instrumentale stukken bevat diverse stijlen. De gave rusten zijn goed geplaatst. Daarna gaat track geheel anders verder, het lijkt wel een nieuw hoofdstuk. Op de achtergrond klinken harmonieuze stemmen, ze hebben een instrumentale functie. Het ritme is aangenaam langzaam, de slagkracht op de drums is iets te hard in verhouding tot Oliver’s integere stem. Het ‘dupliceren’ van de zang loopt niet synchroon, maar dat is juist het bijzondere ervan. Als de gitaar rockend bespeeld wordt, is het volume van de drums weer in balans met het geheel. Er volgen enkele heldere piano tonen, het rockende einde hierna voelt een beetje onwennig aan.
‘Cynical’ heeft een rustig maar uitgebreid instrumentaal intro van onder andere pianoklanken en gitaarspel. In de wending zit in een minieme imperfectie. De woorden die Oliver zingt trekken de aandacht. Sommige delen zingt hij klein en breekbaar, andere stukken met meer volume. Dit is geheel in harmonie met de muziek. Het einde sterft mooi weg.
Het instrumentale intro van ‘The Black Jam’ klopt totaal niet. Maar dan komt de aap uit de mouw. Via sampling hoor je een grappige discussie tussen verschillende muzikanten over wie wat fout speelt. Dan gaat het geheel opnieuw van start. Er zijn ontelbare ‘twists and turns’, één stukje voelt bijna als improvisatie. Op het laatst wordt er weer gelachen. Deze bonustrack is absoluut een volwaardig nummer.
De sampling van onder andere fluitende vogeltjes passen bij ‘The Gardens’. Pianospel gaat langzaam over in (stevige) rock. De wending naar een rustig deel is geniaal. Vlak voor het einde hoor je weer vogeltjes tussen de muziek.
Deze tien nummers zijn rijkelijk gevuld met slagwerk, snaren, en toetsen, dit is verspreid over talrijke laagjes. Oliver heeft bijna alles zelf ingespeeld. Regelmatig zijn er stemmen gestapeld en hoor je allerlei details. Dit alles is goed verdeeld over de speakers/koptelefoon. Soms zit er een snufje poppy sound tussen de prog rock verstopt. De sampling is steeds in dienst van het nummer. Ondanks dat de basis meer dan twintig jaar oud is, is hier al de KariBow stijl op te horen. ‘Supernatural Foe- Rebirth’ is complex maar toegankelijk.

KariBow – Supernatural Foe – Rebirth
The German prog rock project KariBow was founded in the 90’s by singer/multi-instrumentalist Oliver Rüsing. In 1998 his debut album ‘Supernatural Foe’ was released in a small edition. Since the album ‘Addiceted’ from 2014 there has been renewed interest in ‘Supernatural Foe’.
Because of the sound quality at the time and the current technical possibilities, Oliver recorded everything again. In terms of composition he has stayed as close as possible to the original, but the sound quality on this new release is much better. This makes it the rebirth of ‘Supernatural Foe‘, hence the addition ‘Rebirth‘.
Run‘ has a powerful start due to the drumming. In addition, there seems to be a cowbell in the background. When Oliver starts singing, the rhythm is still exciting. The changes flow into each other. Oliver’s longer vocals are fine, moreover he has a clear pronunciation. There is a turn to a quieter piece, with a warm, friendly melody.
At the beginning of ‘Supernatural Foe‘ there is a cool bass sound. One would almost expect that there will be a portion of hard rock. There won’t be any hardrock, but the pace is high. Later on Oliver’s vocals are sensitive and fragile. All the more surprising is the change back to full speed. The end is surprisingly soft.
Various sampled sounds provide a special intro to ‘Burning Books‘. The sequel to this epic is just as special. The words are sung with conviction. The beautiful instrumental pieces contain various styles. The cool musical rests are well placed. After that the track continues in a completely different way, it looks like a new chapter. In the background there are harmonious voices, they have an instrumental function. The rhythm is pleasantly slow, the power of the drumming is a little too loud in relation to Oliver’s integer voice. The ‘duplication’ of the vocals is not synchronous, but that is what makes it so special. When the guitar is played rocking, the volume of the drums is in balance with the whole. Some clear piano tones follow, the rocking end after this feels a bit uncomfortable.
Cynical‘ has a quiet but extensive instrumental intro of piano sounds and guitar playing. There is a minimal imperfection during the turn. The words that Oliver sings attract attention. He sings some parts small and fragile, other parts with more volume. This is in complete harmony with the music. The end dies away beautifully.
The instrumental intro of ‘The Black Jam‘ is completely wrong. But then the cat comes out of the box. In sampling you hear a funny discussion between different musicians about who is playing what wrong. Then the whole process starts all over again. There are countless ’twists and turns’, one piece almost feels like improvisation. In the end they laugh again. This bonus track is definitely a full-fledged song.
The sampling of whistling birds among other things, fits with ‘The Gardens‘. Piano playing slowly turns into (heavy) rock. The turn to a quiet part is genius. Just before the end you can hear birds between the music.
These ten songs are richly filled with drums/percussion, bass/guitar, and keyboards, this is spread over numerous layers. Oliver has played almost everything himself. Regularly voices are being ‘piled up’ and you can hear all kinds of details. All this is well distributed over the speakers/headphones. Sometimes there is a pinch of poppy sound hidden between the prog rock. The sampling is always in the service of the song. Despite the fact that the foundation is more than twenty years old, the KariBow style can already be heard here. Supernatural Foe-Rebirth‘ is complex but accessible.
