Cyril is een melodische prog band uit Duitsland. ‘The Way Through‘ is hun derde album. Dit conceptalbum gaat over een patiënt die op de intensive care ligt. Hij zweeft tussen leven en dood. Atmosferische prog zal worden afgewisseld met opzwepende delen. Behalve vocale gedeelten, zijn er ook melodische en/of instrumentale stukken.
Sferische muziek geeft ‘The Gate’ het sobere gevoel van ‘leegte’. Onverwacht komt er een wending naar de rock, er zit een vleugje pop in verweven. De eerste zinnen lijken een bijna-doodervaring mee te geven. De stem is zowat vrolijk van kleur, het licht poppy ritme past hierbij. Maar hierdoor valt de ernst van het concept niet goed op. Je beleeft en voelt het verhaal niet tot op het bot. Het einde wordt weggedraaid.
In ‘My Own Reflection’ lijkt heden en verleden van de hoofdpersoon onsamenhangend met elkaar verbonden. Het geheel klinkt vrij happy, alsof de hoofdpersoon zich toch comfortabel voelt. En zich amper bewust is van de ernst van de situatie. Dit optimisme voelt goed, maar tegelijk ook wat merkwaardig. Tijdens een heerlijk instrumentaal stuk horen we het saxofoonspel van Marek Arnold. Bovendien is er divers toetsenwerk, waaronder sprankelende pianoklanken. Na prima gitaarwerk wordt ook dit nummer langzaam weggedraaid.
Doordat de eerste 20 seconden van ‘Get Up High’ ingetogen zijn gespeeld, verwacht ik een intense track die mij tot op het bot kan gaan raken. Maar het vervolg is licht poppy,
Het geheel lijkt weg te sterven, maar het is een wending. Het heldere pianospel wordt opgevolgd door de elektronische klanken van de toetsen. Er komen diverse laagjes muziek bij, dit loopt mooi heen en weer tussen de speakers. De bas is wat meer op de achtergrond, maar wel duidelijk hoorbaar. Na een licht chaotisch stukje sterft dit nummer heel langzaam, maar wel mooi weg.
Na een uptempo stuk lijkt ‘The Wasteland – Home Again’ weg te sterven. Als dat gebeurt, vloeit er bijna tegelijkertijd andere muziek in. Hierdoor zou je verwachten dat er nog een heel stuk gaat komen. Maar na ongeveer een halve minuut dooft het nummer uit. Dit voelt vreemd, alsof er zo maar een stukje aan het nummer geplakt is.
‘The Way Through?’ heeft een bijzondere start. De melodie was deels al eerder te horen, meerdere elementen uit voorgaande tracks keren terug. Deze instrumentale terugblik heeft wat melancholie in zich. Tot slot zijn er een paar gesproken zinnen, deze zetten je aan het denken: of de hoofdpersoon zich wel of niet bewust was of is van de situatie, en zo ja, of hij deze juist inschat.
Her en der doet de zang mij een beetje aan Genesis denken, uit de tijd dat Phil Collins daar de frontman van was. De muziek bevat soms heel wat laagjes, de balans hiertussen is prima. Ook de zang en muziek zijn in harmonie.
Het minimalistisch en sober uitgevoerd tekstboekje heeft het uiterlijk van een folder(tje). Al het artwork is somber, en wekt de indruk dat dit voor zang en muziek ook zo zal zijn. Als je puur naar de klankkleur van de zang en naar de muziek luistert, heb je het misschien niet in de gaten dat dit een conceptalbum is. Het thema coma is ‘zwaarbeladen’, maar dat is het album niet. Er zijn enkele licht emotionele stukken, maar ik word nergens diep geraakt. Cyril heeft ervoor gekozen om het geheel ‘luchtig’ te laten klinken Hierdoor mis je misschien een stukje beleving. The whole thing sounds quite happy, as if the main character feels comfortable anyway. And is hardly aware of the seriousness of the situation. This optimism feels good, but at the same time also a bit strange. During a delightful instrumental piece, we hear Marek Arnold’s saxophone playing. Moreover, there is a variety of keyboard, including sparkling piano sounds. After some fine guitar work, this song is slowly turned away as well.
Because the first 20 seconds of ‘Get Up High‘ are played subdued, I expect an intense track that can touch me to the bone. But the sequel is slightly poppy,
The whole thing seems to be dying away, but it’s a twist. The clear piano playing is followed by the electronic sounds of the keys. There are several layers of music, this runs nicely back and forth between the speakers. The bass is more in the background, but clearly audible. After a slightly chaotic piece this song goes very slowly, but nicely away.
After an up-tempo piece ‘The Wasteland – Home Again‘ seems to die away. When that happens, other music flows in almost at the same time. Because of this you would expect a whole piece to come. But after about half a minute the song dies out. This feels strange, as if there is just one fragment stuck to the song.
The Way Through‘ has a special start. The melody was partly heard before, several elements from previous tracks return. This instrumental flashback has some melancholy in it. Finally, there are a few spoken sentences, these make you think: whether the main character was or is not aware of the situation, and if so, whether he judges it right.
Here and there the vocals remind me a bit of Genesis, from the time when Phil Collins was the front man of that. The music sometimes contains a lot of layers, the balance between them is fine. Also, the vocals and music are in harmony.
The minimal and soberly executed textbook has the appearance of a simple flyer. All the artwork is gloomy, and gives the impression that this will be the case for vocals and music. If you just listen to the timbre of the vocals and the music, you may not notice it’s a concept album. The theme coma is tough, but the album isn’t. There are some slightly emotional pieces, but I’m not deeply touched anywhere. Cyril has chosen to make the whole sound ‘lighthearted’. This might make you miss a bit of involvement.
