Gitaar virtuoos/zanger Snowy White draait onder deze pseudoniem al heel wat decennia mee. Hij mag al lang met pensioen gaan, maar daar heeft hij blijkbaar geen zin in. Want hij bracht met zijn ‘White flames’ weer een nieuw album uit.
Door de percussie trekt het intro van ‘The Situation’ meteen de aandacht naar zich toe. Vervolgens zorgen ritme en melodie voor een aangename flow. Op de duur krijgt het poppy geheel een zomers tintje. Zo stiekem weg zijn er best heel wat laagjes, die je niet allemaal in één keer hoort. Dit is zeker een nummer wat moet groeien.
‘This Feeling’ heeft een wat merkwaardig intro, dit komt door het strakke, en vrij kil geluid van één van de trommels. De toetsen worden stroperig langzaam bespeeld. Het gitaarspel is prachtig ingetogen. De cimbalen zijn zacht bespeeld, maar die ene trommel klinkt in verhouding vrij hard. De overige muziek komt wat in de verdrukking. Toch geniet ik van deze licht dromerige track die nogal abrupt eindigt.
Een zomerse sfeer hoor je in het instrumentale ‘LA Skip’. Dit geeft een zonnig gevoel. Er zijn diverse veranderingen in tempo en instrumenten, ondanks dat ben ik niet diep onder. Het verwachte ‘wow moment’ blijft uit.
‘Can’t Seem To Do Much About It’ is een luistertekst die niet echt vrolijk is. Het is een soort vraagstuk van wat er aan de hand is in de hedendaagse maatschappij. Een hele generatie lijkt gek geworden te zijn. We lijken niks te kunnen doen aan de gevechten, en aan de pijn. Het ritme en de kleur van de zang zijn in verhouding vrij vrolijk, waardoor het nummer niet al te somber klinkt. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk hoor je leuke details van de toetsen. Het klein gespeelde deel vlak voor het einde is super! Dit had best nog een fractie langer mogen duren.
Ook ‘Crazy Situation Blues’ is vrij somber. De toetsen en snaren zijn in perfecte harmonie. De drums hadden eventueel nog iets zachter gekund zodat de intens gespeelde muziek wat meer ruimte had gekregen. Dit slow blues nummer is geloofwaardig gezongen.
De eerste ingetogen tonen van ‘Why Do I Still Have The Blues’ raken mij, dat geldt ook voor de integere zang. Tempo en volume gaan wat omhoog, de details op de achtergrond zijn fantastisch. Het gitaarspel in het rustige deel is super. Het volume wordt weer omhooggestuwd, de muziek wordt wat pittiger. Dit vleugje rock past prima in het geheel. Dit geweldige nummer laat mij de sombere, misschien zelfs pessimistische gevoel van de voorgaande nummers vergeten.
Tijdens ‘Migration’ sijpelt mijn aandacht een paar keer weg, maar steeds weet Snowy White het terug te winnen. Dit interessante nummer moet even groeien.
‘The Situation’ is een goed album, met veel details, toch heeft het geen diepe indruk gemaakt. De geluidskwaliteit is goed, maar had her en der beter gekund De meeste van deze twaalf nummers komen wat pessimistisch over. Natuurlijk kan ik me dat voorstellen, want er zijn zorgen in het leven. Maar de toegankelijkheid heeft er wel onder te lijden. Want je moet wel zin hebben in een negatieve, maar misschien wel realistische kijk op het leven. Opbeurend zijn de meeste nummers dus niet. Can’t Seem To Do Much About It‘ is a listening text that is not very cheerful. It’s a kind of question of what’s going on in today’s society. A whole generation seems to have gone mad. We don’t seem to be able to do anything about the fights, or about the pain. The rhythm and the colour of the vocals are relatively cheerful, so the song doesn’t sound too gloomy. During an instrumental piece you can hear nice details of the keys. The small part played just before the end is super! This should have taken a little longer.
Also ‘Crazy Situation Blues‘ is pretty gloomy. The keys and strings are in perfect harmony. The drums could have been a bit softer so that the intensely played music would have had more space. This slow blues song is sung credibly.
The first subdued tones of ‘Why Do I Still Have The Blues‘ touch me, the same goes for the honest vocals. Tempo and volume go up a bit, the details in the background are fantastic. The guitar playing in the quiet part is super. The volume is pushed up again, the music is a bit spicier. This hint of rock fits perfectly into the whole. This great song makes me forget the gloomy, maybe even pessimistic feeling of the previous songs.
During ‘Migration‘ my attention seeps away a few times, but Snowy White always manages to win it back. This interesting song has to grow a bit.
The Situation‘ is a good album, with a lot of details, yet it hasn’t made a deep impression. The sound quality is good, but could have been better here and there. Most of these twelve songs are a bit pessimistic. Of course, I can imagine that, because there are worries in life. But accessibility does suffer. Because you have to feel like having a negative, but perhaps realistic view on life. So most of the songs are not uplifting. Singing and music are generally in balance.
